I always go for Unchained Melody. Especially the Righteous Brothers version... my heart just melts when I hear that. Also, Lonestar - Amazed is beautiful.

I am astounded by how different tastes can be, because I listened to Fun Factory's song, "I love you," and I couldn't stand it. Also, I have always disliked "Love Song" by The Cure. I don't like the tepid instrumentation, I don't like the whiny singing, I don't like the lyrics. (Nothing against the songs; it is just a personal preference issue.)

Here, on the other hand, is a love song that affects me in a good way by making me feel more acutely the emotion of missing someone every time I listen to it:

The Drifters - "I Don't Want To Go On Without You"

VEGANGELICA 07-21-2011 10:18 AM

Two love songs I like very much:

The Rolling Stones - "She's a Rainbow"
Beautiful.

The Rolling Stones - "Paint It Black"
A great song about the depression caused by the death of a loved-one.

I had never heard that song by The Beatles before, Topazchicken.

One of my favorite love songs is "I'd Love Just Once To See You" by The Beach Boys because it realistically describes the experience of loving someone. Instead of being a traditional love ballad that is a soaring, ethereal paean to the beloved, this song shows the meshing of love with everyday life. The lyrics don't have to say "I love you" because the sentiment is spoken primarily through the account of actions.

And it's a cute song, too, :) as it describes how thoughts and emotions about the person interlace into your daily activities, filling them with the sweetness of appreciation, pleasant excitement, and hopeful longing to be with that person again and see her or him...entirely.

I had never even heard of Joan Baez before two years ago. Sad but true. :(

Below is a love song I like. Just ignore that it was used very effectively in a creepy movie in which the young woman does some rather terrible things to the man about whom she is obsessed! I haven't seen the movie, but the song seems to match the plot perfectly.

Breeders - "Do You Love Me Now"
This song has a pleasant slow, grinding feel to it, with the rough edges warmed and smoothed by Kim Deal's clear, silky voice. :) The instrumentals give the sense of there being an almost disturbing undercurrent of power behind the soft surface of the words.

VEGANGELICA 08-24-2011 09:12 PM

Since the last song ^ I posted was a little disturbing, I decided to share a non-stalkerish love song, an '80s power ballad that I like because it is so sweet and supportive.

Cheap Trick - "If You Want My Love"
Sigh. :) This song sounds to me like comfort feels, so I always enjoy listening to it. I like the jangly guitars with their harp-like strumming, the pretty melody, and of course the sentiment. I remember listening to the lyrics carefully when I was a teenager while thinking, wow, could people actually feel that way? The song made me hopeful. I've read that what many women want most in a relationship is to feel desired by someone they admire who has a steadfast heart. If so, then Cheap Trick made a song to feed into that longing almost perfectly. Crafty fellows!

I never watched the video before today, though. I was surprised to see the drummer is actually smoking while playing! :(

Yikes! I think Kelli's "Gave Up On Love" song belongs in the http://www.musicbanter.com/pop/55727...ml#post1036813 thread, jessim, seeing as how the singer ends up killing her two-timing boyfriend with that ice-pick at the end of the video, splattering his blood around!

Not very lovey-dovey, that's for sure. :p: People with a fondness for electrical equipment may not want to watch the video either. ;)

VEGANGELICA 08-28-2011 05:16 AM

Apparently I'm the only one listening to love songs over the last several days, because here I am again! ;)

I was listening to Cyndi Lauper tonight and realized that she sings "I Drove All Night," a love song I like because it expresses so well the impulsive, strong yearning to be with someone you love in a romantic way. Also, it has the sound of a cello  in it, an instrument that should inspire a whole genre of love songs dedicated solely to the cello itself. Unfortunately, I found out by watching a performance other than the video below that the cello sound is just a synthesizer. I had been fooled. :(

Cyndi Lauper - "I Drove All Night"

VEGANGELICA 09-08-2011 01:14 PM

I don't love the sound of this song (below), but I like its meaning very much.

I feel this love song expresses well the complicated and powerful feelings of a romance where you can't quite control or understand the emotions that pull you to someone...but you both want what you can't fully understand, and you don't want to let go of each other:

Pat Benatar - "Be Belong"

Edit: I said I don't love the sound of the song, but that isn't actually the full story. I do like some of the musical qualities of this song quite a bit.

For example, the repetition of quieter sections (the verses) building again and again to the powerful chorus could be thought of as reflecting the ebb and flow of emotions in a relationship where the love you share is like the ocean: sometimes, when the tide is high, the feelings of togetherness can be overwhelming (the chorus), but when the tide is low and the bare, lonely beach is exposed, you feel your aloneness, emptiness, and doubts.

The low tides aren't pointless or useless, however, because they let you pay closer attention to some of the beauties of the ocean and the beach (your life) over which it flows, such as the sea stars, sand dollars, and little bubbles rising up from buried crustaceans that you couldn't see during high tide.

Perhaps these low tide times of questioning and feeling separate help you have more to give when you are together. They also remind you that a relationship doesn't mean two people effortlessly become one, but rather they remain two people who maintain the relationship by striving again and again to build and honor the feeling they share. Being able to live with the ocean means being able to accept the tides.

Also, I love the guitar playing at one particular moment in the song, when the guitar is strummed four times sequentially and powerfully. Here, I'll find the moment . . . it is at 2:13, and just before. I feel this is a special moment in the song, a brief quiet section punctuated by strong sounds not repeated elsewhere in the song. This brief section could be viewed as a metaphor for the reality that the person whom you love, and your feelings for that person, are unique and precious.

^ See, these are the sorts of thoughts I have when I hear and think about music. :D

I recently heard a cute cover of "Wishin' and Hopin'" that opens the semi-humorous comedy, "My Best Friend's Wedding," in which Julia Roberts ("Julianne") realizes she is in love with her (rather wooden and two dimensional) best friend right before his wedding.

I wouldn't recommend the movie, except for the very beginning (the song) and the very end, a delightful conversation between Julianne and her gay friend George, who describes her as "sniffing the wind like a dappled deer" :) and says to her,

Spoiler for The Ending of "My Best Friend's Wedding!":
George to Julianne: "Maybe there won't be marriage. Maybe there won't be sex. But by God, there will be dancing!" :)

I liked that scene and its wisdom on how to deal with what you can, and cannot, control in life. I also think spoiler tags are cool as heck!

But back to the start of the movie. It opens with this . . .

Ani Difranco - "Wishin' and Hopin'"
(Cover of the original song that was written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach and was a Top Ten hit in 1964.)
I like watching the dancing and lip syncing in this fluffy confection of pre-wedding hoping and scheming:

Here's a cute love song I've always felt was very catchy ever since I first heard it . . . a while ago.

I really like the percussion's castanets and shakers. They make the song's background sound pleasantly fizzy, like tickly bubbles in soda pop.
