Best Artist: Round 1: Poll 1

Okay you pick your favorite artists on here and then the top two winners go onto the next round and we repeat the process. Each poll is open for two days.

I vote for Camera Obscura.

Seltzer 02-07-2008 12:03 AM

I was torn between Alice in Chains and Rush, and decided to go for the first. Camera Obscura and Aesop Rock are cool too.

ProggyMan 02-07-2008 12:12 AM

If Aesop doesn't make it past round 1...****...Where's matious when you need him:).

He'll be back in under 2 days as a matter of fact.

ProggyMan 02-07-2008 12:25 AM

Not quite soon enough...But I can count on Scott I think.

Comus 02-07-2008 12:36 AM

Rush needs to win this one or all faith will be lost with forum.

ProggyMan 02-07-2008 12:47 AM

No hope.

Rush isn't likely to make the cut to be honest. If Boo Boo sees this poll he'll vote for them, and I think TheCaster might as well. I've already voted for AiC (hard decision). Sadly, there aren't too many prog fans on this forum.

ProggyMan 02-07-2008 12:57 AM

I'm not much of a Rush fan, but I probably listen to the third most prog on the boards. Usually it's me Seltzer and boo boo.

adidasss 02-07-2008 01:33 AM

Is it ok to vote if you've only heard one band on the poll?

sleepy jack 02-07-2008 02:18 AM

As long as that bands name is Camera Obscura.

Jonz 02-07-2008 02:55 AM

Camera Obscura all the way!

littleknowitall 02-07-2008 05:30 AM

rush get my vote.

.Tom. 02-07-2008 08:31 AM

Rush, without a doubt.

ProggyMan 02-07-2008 09:17 AM

Ok, this is ridiculous. Rush did pioneer a new type of synthesizer use, but ever heard anyone more annoying than Geddy Lee?

.Tom. 02-07-2008 09:24 AM

Subject to taste, I think, so I understand that he's definitely not everyone's cup of tea. I was quite impressed when I saw them live last year though, he performed really well vocally - well, if you like his vocals of course...

ProggyMan 02-07-2008 09:34 AM

Uh, he's a rapper.

.Tom. 02-07-2008 09:36 AM

Was I wrong thinking your question was sarcastic? :P

Yeah, you.

EDIT: Did you just call Geddy Lee a rapper?

Ah, now I don't feel as stupid. That's what I thought too.

Comus 02-07-2008 10:58 AM

I really hope that's not what he meant.

.Tom. 02-07-2008 11:17 AM

Well, there is Roll The Bones...

British_pharaoh 02-07-2008 11:30 AM

none of the bands stand out for me

cardboard adolescent 02-07-2008 11:57 AM

Agreed

Clownbaby 02-07-2008 03:40 PM

Definitely Alice In Chains, Rush is talented but never really enjoyed them...particularly Geddy Lee's voice

Why? Especially when you have a genuine reggae legend in the poll in Jimmy Cliff

reggae legends >>>>>>>>>>>. boring prog bands

Comus 02-07-2008 04:23 PM

Since when was Rush boring? Uneven yet, but their great albums are truly great.

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-07-2008 04:25 PM

Since I found myself listening to a song with Geddy Lee wailing about a bunch of trees and I thought to myself 'what the fuck am I doing with my life listening to this dull shit.'

Comus 02-07-2008 04:25 PM

And Reggae lyrics are so much better/consequential (don't get me wrong I do love reggae).

Geddy Lee is a pretty weird guy, i see him every once in a while, he lives by me. I do like rush, though, but I vote for Alice in Chains.

It was the whole package not just the lyrics.
And personally I find lyrics about this sort of thing ..
http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/content/...ty_203x152.jpg

a bit more palletable than lyrics about this sort of thing ...

Apparently, you didn't notice the metaphors in that song. Maybe give it another listen.
BTW, the song Subdivisions is social commentary at its best.

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-07-2008 05:02 PM

No I did notice them I just didn't think they were very good.

I like that song. I understand it to mean that we're not all the same and therefore any attempt to enforce equality will never properly work. In the last verse, the lines "For they passed a noble law. And the trees are all kept equal. By hatchet, axe, and saw" suggests that humans still insist on enforcing equality, despite the consequences and horrible pruning required.

The vocals are an acquired taste and they would benefit from another vocalist, but his basswork is ridiculous. I think he's a brilliant songwriter and he's one of my main inspirations as a bassist.

Miltamec Soundsquinaez 02-07-2008 05:17 PM

Well, obviously it's not as good as The Fall song, 'The Power of Thunder and Lightning'
j/k

Rubber 02-07-2008 05:21 PM

Camera Obscura is more my style

Are you sure you can keep this up for another 10 albums because that's how many Rush albums I seem to have misunderstood ;)

Haha, I can't see you listening to the prog bands like Rush, Genesis and Yes. Maybe some King Crimson though, especially Red.
