Metal varies. There are so many genres of metal. death metal, hair metal, goth metal, screamo, the list goes on. Be more specific. Because I hate thick vocals that I cant understand. Try listening to Cradle of Filth. They are more numetal/goth metal and they have a chick singing opera-esque in the background. I didnt like metal until I listened to them. Now I listen to all kinds. Dimmu Borgir is pretty sweet too.

Well when I think of band, I think of one, or possibly two, vocalists, and the rest playing their instruments. All they did was harmonize 5 parts and its really not THAT hard. I've done one-on-a part, 8 parts once for a choir piece, now that involves some talent.
