I say Dirty it was my first taste of Sonic Youth, so it will always hold a place in my heart. Favorite track is Drunken Butterfly.

for me:

1. Daydream Nation
2. Evol
3. Confusion Is Sex
4. Bad Moon Rising
5. A Thousand Leaves
6. Sister
7. Washing Machine
8. Murray Street
9. Goo
10. Sonic Nurse
11. NYC Ghosts + Flowers
12. Dirty
13. Rather Ripped
14. Experimental Jet Set

Daydream Nation may be the cliche choice, but it is by far their best album overall.

there's actually a hidden agenda for this poll

I've only recently (last 3 years or so) gotten into SY

I have Dirty and Day dream nation and just wanted to know what else to get and as they have such an extensive back catalogue not to mention moore and Kim Gordon's other projects I thought I'd enlist some help

I have a certain affliction with Washing Machine for no good reason except for it was the first one to hit me in the face as really good.

I've always though 'Sonic Youth', and 'Confusuion Is Sex' were complelty awful albums.....

Evol, Sister, and Daydream Nation are my three top favorite...I'm unsure as to which one I like more though....

they have a certain charm to them.

"Sonic Youth" is the band finding their feet, and The Burning Spear is a classic track...sounds like SY are trying to imitate Public Image Ltd, until that drill on the guitar comes in a skewers the song into crazyness.

"Confusion Is Sex" is just noisy and anarchaic...the drums sound absolutely AWFUL, and the production is generally bad. But the song "Confusion is Next"...that song is the sound of anarchy. Generally, a lot of Sonic Youth diehards regard Confusion as their best album...I wouldn't go that far, but it's a classic. Just complete, lo-fi, schizophrenic chaos.

I think Confusuion Is Sex is the great punk album.
