One of the album's singles, "Das Weisse Licht," peaked at number 46 on the German charts, and the video for this song, which depicted Dero tearing open his abdomen, was banned from MTV Germany due to its graphic nature. The album also featured Evanescence-style appearances by Nina Hagen. The band's final album on Virgin, Ego, was released in 2001. Critics gave the album lukewarm reviews, but Ego did well nonetheless, peaking in the German Top 20 and earning the band a tour with HIM. It wasn't good enough for Virgin, though, and they opted to drop Oomph! once their contract expired. Undaunted, Oomph! went on to play Ozzfest the following year and continued to write new material.

Gun/Supersonic signed Oomph! in late 2003, and the band's first single from 2004's Wahrheit Oder Pflicht, "Augen Auf!," hit stores and MTV Germany a few months later. It was a huge success, earning Oomph! their first number one hit and launching the band into the mainstream. "Augen Auf" was the number one song on the German charts for eight weeks, and its first printing nearly sold out within the first 12 hours of its release. The track eventually went on to be included on the FIFA 2005 soundtrack. Oomph!'s winning streak continued with their ninth studio release, 2006's GlaubeLiebeTod (FaithLoveDeath), which peaked in the German Top Ten. The first single from that album, "Gott Ist ein Popstar" (God is a Popstar), sparked considerable controversy when it was released; the band's performance at the ECHO Awards was canceled due to the questionable nature of the song, and many radio stations throughout Germany boycotted the track.

A couple best-of comps emerged in the wake of Oomph!'s mainstream success. Virgin Schallplatten released Best of Virgin Years: 1998-2001 in 2006. Oomph! urged their fans to refrain from purchasing that disc in lieu of Gun's "official" best-of, Delikatessen, which went on to be released in December of that year. ~ Margaret Reges, All Music Guide

No but being on the chart from time to time is not, being #1 on the German chart one time in thier 20 year history, just simply existing on the chart, that doesn't constitute as chart monster.

It only makes sense they've acumulated recognition and a growing fan base over the years. The bottom line is, they aren't being perpetuated by an image or something dishonest, and they aren't mainstream just because they sometimes appear on the German charts

Oh yeah that's one of the biggest markets out there, you see those types everywhere you go. Well no you really dont. And your stereotypes aren't even true. Of the people I know who like to Godsmack, not one of them fits that description at all, and none of them flash around thier Godsmack CDs or tshirts to look cool or for whatever reason, they listen to Godsmack because they GENUINELY LIKE THEM. Myself, my dad, a few of my friends including a female and a black kid from school who just like certain types of 'rock' in general including metal, none of them fit that description.

The bands I listen to are actually good which is why people like them. But even the Godsmacks and the Static-Xs aren't even remotely in the same league of marketability, sell-out BS as the mainstream pop acts and rap acts, not even close.

actually i'd wager it's the 2nd biggest actively pushed market out there. just behind pop. sure the adult contemporary / baby boomer garbage is probably bigger but they don't need to market that, old folks will just go out and get it.

the angry adolescent market (or as RJ puts it - the morbid, depressive, morose pseudo-intellectual morons who feel outcast from society.) works by exploiting the shame and paranoia most teens feel about possibly having their peers find out they used to listen to their older siblings backstreet boys / spice girls albums and knew most of the words back in the day. it's a HUGE market and once you know how to spot them you'll see them everywhere. it's all about being 'unique' just like everyone else.

Is not an enourmous market, it exists but it's not really that big (Angry teenage kids listen to Gangta Rap as much as they listen to, if not more so than, heavy metal)

I go to a highschool and I can assure you, the market you speak of is not that big. There are depressed white kids who listen to mainstream emo crap, the angry kids, even most of the white ones, listen to either rap or pop-punk. Not that many kids are head bangers and they aren't some neat little tidy stereotyped package ready to be exploited by a market, most of them are just normal kids.
