Expanding your tastes?

Well... what kind of music have you been giving a go lately, that you don't normally listen to?

Just recently I've been listening to a lot of hip-hop, primarily old skool hip-hop. I never liked it before, but I was blinded by that crappy mainstream hip-hop. NWA, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, Mase, good stuff.

sweet_nothing 04-11-2008 05:21 PM

Wu tang Clan & my friend told me to get a tupac album so...

Alfred 04-11-2008 05:24 PM

Same deal.

Richiban 04-11-2008 05:24 PM

You need to dial up some Earth, Wind, And Fire, A Tribe Called Quest and Del Tha Funky Homosapien.

Either way, some new stuff I've been listening to is some black metal. Mostly Dimmu Borgir (sp) which I've found myself enjoying, though I'm too much of a pussy to delve deeper into the genre.

ProggyMan 04-11-2008 05:24 PM

Get a Notorious B.I.G. album. Better flow, more interesting lyrics and miles ahead production wise.

ProggyMan 04-11-2008 05:26 PM

Biggie has like the best voice ever man...

sweet_nothing 04-11-2008 05:31 PM

let's see....

satanic skinhead 04-11-2008 05:31 PM

Lately, nothing. I've been a serious fan of metal, punk, and neofolk for a while now and don't have much desire to go scoping around for new genres. Used to comb all through the underground, but I've come to the conclusion that I'd rather listen to something I enjoy then artificially expand my listening habbits in order to appear more open minded. I have a few odd favorites from other genres, but they are exceptions, not rules.

Ooh he said the f word...Tupac has such a mediocre flow.

For hip hop check out Dr. Octagon, Madvillian, MF Doom, cLOUDDEAD, Deltron 3030, and Subtle. DJ Shadow, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Ultramagnetic MC's, Nas (Illmatic) are all classics too. Oh and Black Star and Jurassic 5 are great also. That's right I'm turning this into a suggestion thread. Also if you want to dive more into Wu-Tang's solo stuff Method Man's Tical, Ghostface's Fishscale, and Genius/GZA's Liquid Swords are all good.

Anyway lately I've been listening to a lot of stuff randomally that Marijan suggested to me like Cut Copy and Hercules and Love Affair. Mainly when walking around or driving.

sweet_nothing 04-11-2008 05:36 PM

whatever dude Biggie was slow

Chronotub 04-11-2008 05:40 PM

I've been listening to a lot of dead prez and afrika bambatta recently, also been listening to a bit of reggae and oi

Alfred 04-11-2008 05:45 PM

I just downloaded some Quest. I'll give Biggie a go.

ProggyMan 04-11-2008 05:56 PM

2Pacalypse Now if I had to choose.

Alfred 04-11-2008 05:59 PM

Dr. Octagon is pretty funky, Crow.

sleepy jack 04-11-2008 06:03 PM

And the greatest.

Alfred 04-11-2008 06:04 PM

His lyrics are a lot different than most other hip hop artists, but that's a good thing.

I'd like to get into pop a little more. Not bubblegum pop, but more...intellectual pop, if that makes sense. Does anyone have some suggestions?

ProggyMan 04-11-2008 09:19 PM

Er, The Beatles? The Smiths, Patrick Wolf, Emily Haines.

savannah 04-11-2008 09:27 PM

im listening to more electronic stuff,......and reggae other than marley

Rod Stewart, if you're looking for classic pop. If you want some contemporary stuff, I suggest The Wallflowers, although they're more along the lines of pop-rock. Seeing as I don't listen to much pop, I can't help you out too much though.

savannah 04-11-2008 09:41 PM

you know, alfreds right,...i'm not a huge rod stewart fan,...BUT,....
some of his early stuff is great,....
here's a few of my favs

YouTube - Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells A Story
YouTube - Rod Stewart - Maggie May 1971
YouTube - Reason to Believe

NSW 04-11-2008 09:42 PM

Yeah, I'm familiar with Rod Stewart's older stuff. I'm mostly interested in newer bands.

Lizzie 04-11-2008 09:43 PM

Hello Saferide and Jens Lekman both make wonderfully lovely indie-pop

I would add Bell and Sebastian and Stars as well

Alfred 04-11-2008 09:43 PM

His extremely different version of Forever Young is amazing.

jacklovezhimself 04-13-2008 12:31 AM

I got into electronic stuff like Girl Talk and Dan Deacon. Also I started listening to Bright Eyes and Elliot Smith (1-5 threads mentions at least one of them) and I really (surprisingly) dig them both.

tkpb938 04-13-2008 01:15 AM

I've been brushing up on industrial, and its been quite eenjoyable... Godflesh is awesome.

jackhammer 04-13-2008 03:52 PM

I try to expand my tastes each and every single day. Problem is that when people ask me what I am listening to these days I forget because there is just so much. Maybe I should just scale down and become a metal head.

Ha. Wow I looked up Godflesh expecting something totally metal and severe but instead I got something much different. Godflesh is a very strange name for that band.

polka_tulk 04-13-2008 07:33 PM

Just starting listening to Voodoo-U by Lords Of Acid

satanic skinhead 04-13-2008 11:17 PM

Today I listened to metal and nothing else, same as yesterday, and the last couple years. There is no question that metal is the only important music in the world.

Dr_Rez 04-13-2008 11:36 PM

I hate you.

I agree for the most part. I mean I love expanding my musical knowledge of genres that I like listening to but I see no reason in trying to listen to something that I've been proven time and again not to like.

Just agree with my post. That will suffice.
