Yeah, Porcupine Tree became more riff focused around the period of In Absentia / Deadwing, when Steven Wilson started to embrace his metal influences (he mentions Opeth, Meshuggah, Morbid Angel in particular, during his interview on Futile). He actually has an incredibly eclectic range of influences... as shown here.

Hmm, the Beach Boys thing is interesting. I can hear it on his earlier stuff, like Radioactive Toy etc.
