I tend to dislike anyone who listens to a ton of a music but couldn't even begin to tell you artists or songs they like.

There's more of those than you'd think.

ProggyMan 05-13-2008 09:18 PM

God I just had this debate on RYM...Why is this a bad thing? Why can't they enjoy music in a different way, as long as they don't shove it in your face?

Yes, though people who don't even bother looking into the counter-"opinions", like you, sir, are not worth the words.

And no, I don't think it's particularly interesting to argue out of mere pride for the sake of argument itself. It's foolish and contains no benefit at all. You argue only if you really believe something one way and have the proof to back it up.

(butts in) I argue that this argument is stupid... my proof is the last 2 pages on this thread :bonkhead:

Not quite true at all. Anyway i don't even remember what we're arguing about? oh yeh the Arctic Monkeys are an indie band and Hard Fi are no longer one.

I dont think thats to bad. When people ask me what music i like i have a really hard time answering. Theres so much and i can never pinpoint just a few bands.

Like most i tend to say what i am currently into not my favorite.

sleepy jack 05-14-2008 03:27 PM

I have the same problem as RezZ does and usually then if I name what I'm currently into I get a completely blank stare which I try to avoid because its awkward. So then I try and figure out whats pretty popular, etc. Normally I just tell them Modest Mouse, Morrissey and Radiohead.

Exactly.

Like when you reply with "o, i like buckethead, john fruscainte, and cire" i just get a look back like you an idiot, what are you talking about, or Buckethead...that guy wears a KFC bucket on his head, your taste stinks.

Thats a hard one to defend to your average listener.

If people ask me what type of music I like I just say 'most of it'

Yeah, but I think there's a difference between that and being the kind of person who can't answer simply because they've never formulated their own music tastes. They're interests are entirely built by top-ten radio and whatever happens to be in their friend's CD player.

If that makes sense.

The sorts of people I know wouldn't even have heard of Modest Mouse and Morrissey.

That's why if somebody asks me, I just say Akon and Nickelback.

Comus 05-15-2008 02:10 AM

I've gotten blank stares talking about Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull and Pink Floyd before, so the popular thing doesn't always work.

I find people generalize recognize the name Morrissey though most don't seem to be aware of anything about him...at all. Modest Mouse is huge here.

Just the other day Zeppelin came up in a conversation and there was a chick that never heard of them... I had a hard time trying to think of a song she would have heard ("Stairway" didn't work), I found it amusing.

I just say Rock N Roll... most people have heard of that :)

I've had that happen to me more then a few times...and I get really upset because they know who MCR is and don't know who Led Zeppelin is...then I don't ever talk to them again.

ha, yeah she wasn't a friend... just a chick at a table with my other friends (no friend of mine can go that long without hearing of popular rock bands). I just found it baffling to have never heard of them, I can understand not knowing their music.

Actually, i know quite a few ppl like these.
Whenever i listen to the beatles, all of them Fvcking ignore me saying 'I listen to crappy love songs' and go back to their linkin park/Lim bizkit/korn/ stained/creed/Googoo dolls/etcetc.
They haven't even heard of Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Grateful Dead or even for that matter, Jimi Hendrix.
They have however, heard of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin(yes heard of) because of two friggn songs-Stairway to Heaven and Another Brick in the wall(both of which was played at a local bar i think).

Piss Me Off 05-15-2008 08:07 AM

Wow, i would have thought even the most casual music fan would have at least heard the name Jimi Hendrix.

Demonoid 05-15-2008 08:28 AM

Ill just get a picture of the list of artist's from one of their IPOD whenever i meet them next...You'll be shocked.
It'll have at the most- five good band's here and there with just one or two songs(downloaded...no albums) which they hardly listen to!

Ok fine, to make it short-They enjoy NU/Emo stuff(along with a lot of crappy rock bands) which i just stay away from most of the time.

And I work at a middle school. I'm surrounded by them. :(

NSW 05-15-2008 11:14 AM

I don't even know who the Jonas Brother are....

Speaking of Jimi earlier reminded me of this guy I used to talk to in high school. He was black, and swore up and down to me that there were no black "rock and roll" musicians. LOL. He had heard of Jimi Hendrix, but didn't know that he was black. And when I told him, he was just shocked and kept telling me I was wrong. Good times.

HA, you should have said "not only are their black rock n roll musicians but they are better then the white ones."

Ha! Funny thing is the next day he came back to me and told me that he'd asked his parents about Jimi Hendrix, and they had both laughed at him for not knowing he was black. Even funnier, he later played me a mix tape he had made with only black artists on it, and the very last song was "You are so Beautiful" as sung by Joe ****er. So needless to say, when I told him that Joe ****er was white, that totally blew his mind.

Edit: I can't believe this damn site won't let me type Joe C0cker's name...
