Because he's essentially saying that simple = not good.

I have read your posts. If you don't think I've represented you fairly why don't you tell me why being able to play a song make is not great.

"Now it doesn't have to be malsteem material, but I think the 100 greatest guitar songs should involve a little talent and expertise in them. And I find neither in this song" That's your misrepresentation. That's why I said read my posts. I have nothing against simple songs, I just think their are too many incredible guitar songs that aren't included on this list. I mean where's Satriani? Vai? Eric Johnson?

The RS bias is on full display, over emphasis old blues, and ancient rock n rollers and R&B acts, as well as some current trendies at the expense of excluding hard rock and metal. I like the rockibilly and surf selections, but if you're going to include **** Dale and Link Wray, who were the shredders of their era, why not Satriani and Vai? Below is a little swapping around:
1) Megadeth - Hanger 18 / Chuck Berry - "Johnny B. Goode" Megadeth, the mother of all guitar bands, and this is the mother of all guitar songs. 6) UFO - Rock Bottom / Van Halen - "Eruption" This isn't a song. 9) The Allman Brothers Band - "Whipping Post" / "The Allman Brothers Band - "Statesboro Blues" Fillmore East version of "Whipping Post" is the definitive Bros. 14) Lou Reed - The Blue Mask / Born To Run - "Bruce Springsteen" Great tune, but this is not a guitar song, just ask Clarence Clemmons. 17) Black Sabbath - "Supernaut" / Black Sabbath - "Black Sabbath" I admit it..I'm a "Supernaut" junkie. 18) The Clash - Complete Control / Ramones - "Blitzkrieg Bop" Mick Jones was the greatest punk 6 stringer 19) Mountain - Mississippi Queen / Prince And The Revolution - "Purple Rain" How much did WB pay for this plug? Nice looking guitar, though. Leslie West was the fattest guitar player...sound wise. 20) Ted Nugent - Stranglehold / The Impressions - "People Get Ready" Give me a break Let's try some Nugent, instead. 26) Robin Trower - Too Rolling Stoned / B.B. King - "How Blue Can You Get?" I hate to do this, but the English were better blues rocker. 28) Echo and the Bunneymen - With a Hip / U2 - "Where The Streets Have No Name" Good song, but this is an anthem! Will Sargent played tense and psychedelic. 30) BOC - Godzilla / Bill Haley And His Comets - "(We're Gonna) Rock Around The Clock" Good to know for history class, but Buck Dharma would eat Haley's guitarist for breakfast and crap him out in 5 minutes. 31) Queen - Stone Cold Fever / Queen - "Keep Yourself Alive" Thrash before it existed. 35) The Stooges - Loose / The Stooges - "1969" Too tentative. The Stooges really let loose on Fun House. 44) Faith no More - War Pigs / sleater-Kinney - "Dig Me Out" I know it's a cover, but what a cover! 45) Band of Gypsies - Power of Love / The Beatles - "I Saw Her Standing There" Three Beatle songs, and three Jimi songs. I'm breaking the tie. 60) Janes Addiction - Pigs in Zen / Funkadelic - "Maggot Brain" Eddie Hazel was good, but when David Navarro caught fire, as he does here, he torches the house down. 61) Montrose - Rock Candy / Sam And Dave - "Soul Man". A choice only the RS editorial board could understand. Ronnie Montrose, vastly under-rated 62) Foghat - I Just Want to Make Love to You / Albert King - "Born Under A Bad Sign" What can I say, I like the English boogie blues better. 65) Yes - Siberian Khatru / The Police - "Message In A Bottle" Not as substantial as Steve Howes work. 68) Bad Company - Deal With the Preacher / B.B. King - "The Thrill Is Gone" Need I explain. Mick Ralphs, classy and knew when to move in for the kill. 69) Boris - Rattlesnake / Pink Floyd - "Money" What were these guys smoking. No dosing off when Boris plays. 71) Deep Purple - "Smoke on the Water" / The Strokes - "Take It Or Leave It" The reason why I didn't include this earlier is because I assumed it was in the list? If I didn't want to be so iconclastic, I'd go with "Highway Star". 72) Motorhead - Ace of Spades / Weezer - "Say It Ain't So" This stomps Weezer. 78) Black Label Society - All For You / Buddy Guy - "Stone Crazy" Another old blues guys, this time replaced by a southern fried doom guy. 2nd fattest sound next to Leslie West. 80) Gang of Four - To Hell w/ Poverty / Steely Dan - "Kid Charlemagne" I don't recall this being a guitar song? 81) Michael Jackson - "Beat It" I wanted to get rid of this but thanks to Eddie, it's catchy. 84) Melvins - Revolve / John Mayer - "Gravity" RS pandering to a new generation of subscribers. Man these new kids are sooo un-hip. 85) Hot Tuna - Funky #7 / Phish - "You Enjoy Myself" Ahh, Trey...if you want to know what jamming is all about you should have been listening to Jorma and not so much Jerry. 87) King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man / King Crimson - "Red" Not adventerous enough...KC by the numbers. 21 st was the beginning of Metal, but RS doesn't want you to know that since they don't cover it. 89) Scorpions - Speedy's Coming / Joan Jett And The Blackhearts - "I Love Rock N' Roll" Classic Scorps. Speed metal, before it existed. 92) Kiss - "Strutter"/ Mick Jagger - "Memo From Turner" The snobs at RS thought on this..."Pick an alleged guitar song few people have heard from a famous singer. People will think we're brilliant, right?" Not really. "Performance" was a great movie but this song sucks! Another stretch, by RS leads to my replacement, KISS ( Keep It Simple, Stupid) 94) Aerosmith - Nobody's Fault / Dire Straits - "Money For Nothing" Rolling Stones (the band) rip-off 97) QOTSA - Song For the Deaf / Queens Of The Stoneage - No One Knows" How could they choose this over that? 98) Red Hot Chilli Peppers - If You Have to Ask / Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Under The Bridge" Futher proof RS don't know what the fook they talkin about. 99) Velvet Underground - Sister Ray / My Mourning Jacket - "Run Thru" How could you not include Sister Ray? Bonus Track: The Cult - Love Removal Machine Last edited by almauro; 06-21-2008 at 06:50 PM. |
