L*******l named England's most musical city

Liverpool named England's 'most musical city' | News | NME.COM

Really? Liverpool? Why beacuse of The Beatles? That's one band, other citys are more deserving. I think the title should have gone to Manchester I mean all the great bands The Smiths/Morrissey, Stone Roses, Joy Division/New Order, Oasis, The Verve, The Fall, Happy Mondays.....the list goes on man. My second choice would of been London The Who, The Clash, Sex Pistols.....ect. Liverpool? Wtf?

Piss Me Off 06-18-2008 02:09 AM

I'm sure Right Track will be ecstatic with this result!

The La's (and Cast!!!!!), Echo and the Bunnymen and Frankie Goes to Hollywood came from Liverpool. I have to agree with you, Manchester gets my vote. So many important artists.

British_pharaoh 06-18-2008 04:00 AM

Clinic are from Liverpool as well

it's closer than you think but Manchester should be above the scousers

Rainard Jalen 06-18-2008 04:56 AM

Yah, frankly I think we all know very well that the only city that should have won this is London.

boo boo 06-18-2008 07:42 AM

Manchester is overrated.

London should be the clear winner, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who, Queen, Elvis Costello, The Clash, Cream and Yes seal the deal for me.

mr. goth glam 06-18-2008 07:50 AM

I don't think I could pick myself.

Especially between London and Manchester.

sweet_nothing 06-18-2008 07:56 AM

Dont Pink Floyd originate from Cambridge?

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-18-2008 08:31 AM

I don't really see what Liverpool has done thats so special other than Merseybeat and a few indie bands in the 80s.

London could probably be discounted because that's where the music industry is based. Of the list Boo Boo gave , Led Zeppelin were from Birmingham , Pink Floyd started in Cambridge and Elvis Costello spent the first years of his career in Liverpool.

sweet_nothing 06-18-2008 08:47 AM

the only thing london really had was the punk scene

boo boo 06-18-2008 08:52 AM

I was thinking more based on where they got popular and were based at for most of their career.

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-18-2008 09:01 AM

That's what I was saying in my original post. Most bands go to London because thats where the industry is based.

Civic Depreciator 06-18-2008 09:05 AM

You guys are forgetting some other big names from Liverpool.
Anathema
Apollo 440
Atomic Kitten
Black
Cilla Black
The Boo Radleys
Cast
Elvis Costello
Dead or Alive
The Dead 60s
Echo & the Bunnymen
Electrafixion
Adam F
The Farm
A Flock of Seagulls
Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Billy Fury
Gerry & the Pacemakers
The KLF
Julian Lennon
The Lightning Seeds
Ian McCulloch
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
The Real Thing
The Searchers
The Swinging Blue Jeans
The Teardrop Explodes
Towers of London
The Yachts
The Zutons
Naturally, there's others I didn't list and not all that I listed are neccesarily good. Overall, I probably agree that Liverpool is not the best music city.

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-18-2008 09:09 AM

And to think you missed out Half Man Half Biscuit from that list.

sweet_nothing 06-18-2008 09:16 AM

those arent really great bands i mean if you have to add frankie goes to hollywood on the list you know youre desperate

What's wrong with them.

Their first 2 singles were 2 of the best pop songs ever made in the 80s.

sweet_nothing 06-18-2008 09:20 AM

do does that really make a city a landmark in music?

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-18-2008 09:22 AM

First band since the Beatles to have their first 3 singles get to no1.
And thats at a time when the singles chart actually meant something. AND they were on an indie label.

Thats a pretty big achievment if you ask me.

sweet_nothing 06-18-2008 09:26 AM

maybe it is but really? Liverpool? Manchester is where its at

right-track 06-18-2008 10:25 AM

Manchester's always been where it's at.
L*******l only got it on the strength of The Beatles IMO.
You only have to look at any modern music poll, whether it be albums or bands and the general public are always wide of the mark.
With the odd exception L*******l traditionally only do poppy upbeat love songs. Almost every scouse band sells their own city out and runs off to London.

Manchester bands on the whole, like to do things their own way, making their own style of music, in their own city.
The whole thing just further convinces me that the general public haven't got a clue when it comes to music.

Piss Me Off 06-18-2008 11:35 AM

I don't understand why Sheffield was the main one after Liverpool. I can think of Arctic Monkeys and Pulp.

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-18-2008 12:07 PM

Sheffield was pretty big in the early 80s , loads of synthpop/ industrial/post punk bands like Cabaret Voltaire , Human League , Clock DVA , Heaven 17 , Artery , Comsat Angels.

Oh and Def Leppard & ABC

And it is the home of Warp Records too.

right-track 06-18-2008 12:13 PM

Still...I can't see how Sheffield put Manchester in third place.

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-18-2008 12:15 PM

I guess there are more Thomson Twins fans still around than we thought

right-track 06-18-2008 12:16 PM

:(

Edit: And don't forget the one armed drummers vote.

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-18-2008 12:24 PM

I pretty much agree with everything you said. The only good Liverpool band was Echo.

And you forgot one of the absolute best Manchester bands: Buzz****s! Thank the Sex Pistols for that famous Lesser Free Trade Hall show. :)

boo boo 06-18-2008 12:38 PM

Canterbury 4 lyfe. The amount of talented prog bands that came out of that city is amazing. Gong, Caravan, Soft Machine, Hatfield & The North, several others.

And since you're all raving about Mancester. Lets not forget that Van Der Graaf Generator came from there. :pimp:

Hmm somethings wrong. I have albums by 3 of those Canterbury bands but only 2 are showing up.

Edit: Gong are listed as being from Paris

Boo Boo?

boo boo 06-18-2008 12:41 PM

Which ones?

Let's not forget Atomic Kitten.

Seriously though...take a good look at Civic Defecater's list;

^ This is the best England has to offer????

Only 3 or 4 bands stand out.

Piss Me Off 06-18-2008 12:53 PM

Cilla Black! How can i forget her?

right-track 06-18-2008 12:54 PM

Aren't the Towers of London southerners?

Piss Me Off 06-18-2008 12:56 PM

I'd have thought they were Londoners (i'm going to ignore the obvious clue). And possibly richer than they put on.

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-18-2008 12:57 PM

Three of those bands have Ian McCulloch in them

:p:

Alfred 06-18-2008 01:53 PM

The Clash were from London. That pretty much does it for me.

sweet_nothing 06-18-2008 02:03 PM

punk started in London so yeh

jackhammer 06-18-2008 02:09 PM

Cheltenham gave us Skunk Anansie's guitarist, Brian Jones (a little tearaway in his youth so I have been informed) and the mighty Jaz Coleman of Killing Joke. That's nearly better than Liverpool on it's own :D

adidasss 06-18-2008 02:21 PM

Is it possible that we don't have any Liverpudlians here? Regardless, I'd think it'd be nice if certain mods wouldn't abuse their powers for their own crusade...;)
