I know this probably undermines the point of this thread, but thinking more broadly for a second, I kinda feel that music, and indeed, creativity and art can, and has in the past transcended regional differences, countries, whatever... thats kinda the joy of music, it can be such a universal language for so many... it speaks to this half german half Australian living in the USA, anyways...

So in that context it kinda feels a bit irrelevant to say the best music is from this country etc etc... because great music can come from anywhere...

So, with that higher thought in mind... its still kinda fun to compare though! Ahhhh, good ol' human nature!

Ah, my vote just put U.S. over the U.K. - I could have easily voted for the U.K. though,
as much of what I listen to is British/Irish rock. I like Z.Z. Top and Grand Funk Railroad.
You won't hear music like that coming from Europe!

You are right, It's all good. I voted more to say what I like, not what I think is better. Music is different from place to place, and that's a good thing! :beer:

I think it's pretty close between the US and UK. Definitely positives on both sides and it should really only seriously be contested between these two forces I think. I was left contemplating a huge history of rock and electronic music in the UK against a great history of songwriters and pretty much the whole history of jazz and hip hop stateside.

I decided to use my last.fm top 50 artists to decide, and it came out with 20-17 to the USA, which surprised me somewhat. So much so that I went against it and voted for the UK mainly on my infatuation with Radiohead, although looking back I really can't decide. I think it really would depend upon how I was feeling on the day.

I think if you included Europe excluding the UK it would become more competitive, although I'm not sure how well those countries would take being lumped together. You'd have the great plethora of music in Iceland, the German electronic and house scene, some great music is produced in Scandinavia recently and there's a good history in Ireland and France also.

I find it impossible to choose between the UK and US, i spose my personal taste would dictate that i chose America, but as to which country has spawned the greatest music is too difficult a Q to answer. All i will say is i am very proud of British music over the decades. The 60's, 70's and to a lesser extent the 80's were all about the UK in my opinion. Over the last 20 years the US has dominated my ears.

Im going for Germany, screw the english-speaking criteria.

although I would love to vote Canada..I voted UK. the things going on with EDM over there is ridiculous

I voted US because I live here, but it was really close between here and UK. Both have a ridiculous amount of good music coming out now, and have had fantastic bands over the years. I chose based on the fact that The Pixies, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, and Neutral Milk Hotel all came from the US, so that's quite a few of my favorites. Plus MF DOOM, but he is sort of in the middle (lives in US, but he was born in UK). In reality though, I think that since the internet allowed people from all of the world to spread their music throughout with complete anonymity if they chose to do so, the country of origin isn't is much a factor these days. Luckily I can listen to music from all over the world with the click of a button :)
