Which country (within the Anglosphere) makes the best music?

I had to limit the options to English-speaking countries to get some kind of structure to the poll.

Demonoid 07-08-2008 12:49 PM

It's a small island off the south coast of Australia.

Molecules 07-08-2008 03:10 PM

for sheer volume of great artists I would plumb with our rain-sodden little island (whilst acknowledging that all popular music can ultimately be traced back to North America)

lucifer_sam 07-08-2008 03:51 PM

Sh!t. I forgot Van Morrison was Irish.

jackhammer 07-08-2008 03:53 PM

The Brits and Americans will probably vote for their respective countries, so I think we will probably lose!

America provided the foundations and Britain built the house. My list is not a personal preference list. It is merely a list of artists that garnered success worldwide. Big 3's list has some great names and probably more influential or original (Waits etc) artists but for a small island our stamp on modern music is undeniable and indelible.

WaspStar 07-08-2008 04:22 PM

I'm an American, but all of my favorite bands are British. The only American acts I really like are Dylan, Springsteen, Chuck Berry, Townes Van Zandt, Phil Ochs, and John Prine. Apart from the VU and the Dead Kennedys, I can't think of a single American band to get excited about.

OT: Clearly America, the sheer scope of bands it keeps churning out it is incredible....(oh and yeah, not a big fan of anything older than 1990 so most classic British bands don't do much for me).

Which country produces simple present, as in right now?

I like to think Canada might actually have an indie edge, but I'd have to think that decision over. Def. approve of jackhammer's comment.

Who the heck thinks Sweden is an English speaking country??!? :nono:

The Swedish, probably. (Swedish isn't even an official language there). Seeing as how English has been a compulsory language in school since the 1940s, I'd imagine most people are pretty fluent. Easier to get around there on English than Quebec, I'd imagine.

swim 07-08-2008 07:57 PM

America does folk, hardcore and mathrock better and that's 90% of what I give 2 shits on.

lucifer_sam 07-08-2008 08:06 PM

I voted America because that's where ALL modern music spawned from. Rock n' roll was in full sway before the Big Four came along, from the Chicago Delta blues origins and the works of Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley. Motown singers in the sixties spawned generations of R&B hits. The hip-hop revolution in the eighties was largely the work of Rick Rubin's Def Jam productions (and certainly remains a heavy influence upon current rap artists). I could go on for hours.

Molecules 07-08-2008 08:20 PM

you certainly could, but we're talking about the proportional output of quality artists; and ofcourse it's all subjective to what everyone here considers to be good/relevant in their personal canon. it's the sort of petty and divisive poll that's pointless.

having said that, i wouldn't overstate Rick Rubin's importance in hip hop, at least not in a creative sense. hip hop was a grassroots revolution first and foremost. but then if it wasn't commodified by some fat white guy then would someone like me thousands of miles away have ever heard Ultramagnetic MC's or whoever? probably not.

Demonoid 07-08-2008 09:28 PM

In terms of quality, UK definitely wins in my book.

And not to forget sweden along, just for its quality in terms of modern metal.

Bathory
Bloodbath
Katatonia

Diabolical Masquerade
Arckanum

I could just go on, but ill stop for now. US comes in 3rd i guess.

Who else would it be?

The Monkey 07-09-2008 04:33 AM

The UK rules the 60s, the 70s, the 80s and the 90s
The US rules the 50s and the 00s

The UK wins.

sweet_nothing 07-09-2008 04:38 AM

I think the US ruled most of the 90's, well half until grunge died with Kurt Cobain and Britpop became huge

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-09-2008 11:23 AM

I'll stick up for New Zealand as they did give us Flying Nun Records , one of the most awesome indie labels ever.

sweet_nothing 07-09-2008 11:32 AM

And dont forget Flight of the Conchords

Molecules 07-09-2008 11:41 AM

NZ also gave us Split Enz and some insane prog. i'm changing my vote!

boo boo 07-09-2008 12:14 PM

This is kinda tough, in terms of preference it's pretty close, prog should be enough to sway me though, the brits owned us in the 70s and thats my favorite decade, but from the 90s and present I find myself enjoying a lot more American music, not a big britpop fan. If we went by the decade.

50s = Easly the US, I don't know if the brits even had anything other than Skiffle.

60s = Goddamn close, the british invasion should be enough, but we had an explosion of talented American bands as well, primarly through the garage and psychedelic scenes, and lets not forget Motown. I'd call it a tie.

70s = Easly the brits, they had Zep, Floyd, Who, Bowie, Queen, Sabbath, and of course the prog. We didn't have much to compete with that.

80s = IMO the punk rock scene was better on the American side, I find a lot more out of early hardcore bands than the mopey post punk the brits were dishing out. Overall I would call it a tie.

90s = I know Urban is not gonna agree with this, but I greatly prefer American music from this decade. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Janes Addiction, Flaming Lips, Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers, RATM, Sonic Youth, and hip hop was just reaching it's peak. I never cared for britpop, save Blur. At this point the best thing to come out of the UK was the electronic music.

00s = Well, the UK have the best band right now, Radiohead of course, but
they hardly have anything else. Theres Muse and Porcupine Tree and thats essentially all the British music from this decade that I'm interested in. We have The Flaming Lips, The White Stripes, The Mars Volta, Wilco, My Morning Jacket, Beck. Thats enough to sway me for the states.

So the way I see it, I would give America the edge in variety and quantity (as in music in general, not just rock music), though if I wayed down my favorite artists there would be more brits.

I still can't choose.

jackhammer 07-09-2008 12:57 PM

---80s = IMO the punk rock scene was better on the American side, I find a lot more out of early hardcore bands than the mopey post punk the brits were dishing out. Overall I would call it a tie.---

The British second wave of Punk was just as good as the U.S versions but it is not as well known.

G.B.H, Discharge, Broken Bones, Amebix and Conflict are all excellent bands whom I actually prefer.

U.S. for Soul, U.K. for everything else.
Can't choose between the two.

ProggyMan 07-10-2008 08:58 PM

Currently, the US is much, much, much better. Overall it's a tie. But the US obviously has more good, but also more bad...

the uk? wow.

Double X 07-11-2008 12:33 PM

UK has made the coolest music - it's not even close. All the music I like was made by the brits, except for a couple indie bands. America beats UK in rap, and that's about it.

ProggyMan 07-11-2008 09:03 PM

You're forgetting a few genres Double X.

bob808 07-13-2008 07:32 PM

My vote is for the US, for the sheer diversity of the genres produced.

Dmizz 07-13-2008 07:56 PM

You know those genres that are the basis for all modern music. Forgetting those? Blues...Jazz...
