103 : People Who Start Threads Asking You To Choose Between Two Bands And Then Make a Poll Giving You The Option To Vote For Both.

WHY !!!!!!!!!!
:banghead:

Let see. I just posted the same poll at another site and the first question was where is option c for none of the above and option d for both. I guess I need to read minds of every member of every forum.

the 80s had a ton of great bands... that either started in the 70s or only came to prominence in the 90s. the bulk of what was readily available in the 80s was crap.

while it's great that the net has made it possible for a lot of overlooked bands from the 80s to gain attention it's not entirely accurate to judge the decade based on modern perceptions of the music industry. you had to do a hell of a lot more than just log onto a website to just learn about the existence of a specific underground band let alone actually hear their music back then. you might as well just forget about real underground music if you weren't living (or had a friend / relative) in a large city too.

a list that includes FALCO as a highlight of the 80s is obviously made by someone using an online database to look back at a decade they weren't part of. especially when they diss dexy's midnight runners in the same post, it's not that 'come on eileen' is the apex of songwriting but it's a hell of a lot better than 'rock me amadeus'.

as 'generic' as zombeels 60s list is, that's what was readily available to people in the 60s. you didn't have to dig AND get lucky to find much of it. unlike most of the 80s lists.

Well I can see why people like shltty 80's music when they don't like 60's music.

Nothing to do with reading minds.

I just wonder why people ask you to choose between two bands and then give you the option to cop out.

If I was asking the question i'd want a proper answer.

And I have mentioned this several times before so please don't think I was picking on your thread :)

Maybe because they have a different opinion than you.

That seems like a non sequitur to me. It seems like you're addressing a completely different question. If the question is "How easy was it to find good current music during the 1980s?" then yes, the 1980s might lag behind other decades due to much of the best music being non-mainstream and no ability to use the Internet to discover music.

But, to me, that isn't the question at hand. The question at hand is "Did the '80s produce less good/great music than other decades?" In evaluating that question, it's perfectly reasonable to look back and apply modern understanding. Whether or not that music was readily available to most people at the time (some of it was, some of it wasn't), it was all produced then and is readily available to us today. As far as the '80s contribution to our current pool of music, there was a tremendous one.

Yeah, I wasnt "a part of the 80s". Actually, I like more than "Rock me amadeus?" by Falco, and I do like Dexy's Midnight Runners, just not that song. I "wasn't part of the 80s" is a laughing joke, and you obviously have no ****ing clue as to what you're speaking about. Not everyone "looks back on the internet to check out bands". I was actually handed some Falco around 1984, and didn't even care about "RMA", as i was more of a "Jenny" and "Vienna Calling" fan. Good try though.

You know **** about me. I was born in 1970, I grew up & really started becoming a huge music fan in 1979/80. It was actually before that, when I first listened to KISS Alive. I then became(and still am) a huge Journey fan, and then, I started to really enjoy: new wave/synthpop, after a friend of mine (Jason Zalecki) handed me the Cure's:" Boys dont cry", and Depeche Mode's "Speak and spell", from that point on, I became a huge fan of theirs and others, and couldnt get enough of the genres/decade.

So, for you to talk out of your ass(which you clearly are doing now), on something you know nothing about" which is obvious), makes your opinion, or anything else you have to say, afaic, worthless. For the last 30+ years, I have been huge fan of 80s music, all genre's, and proud to say I still am a fan of it.

Now....**** off!!!

fair. i'm just trying to show why there will always be people who roll their eyes at the 80s. yeah there was LOTS of good music out there, but most people didn't really get a chance to enjoy it until the late 90s. i guess it's the difference of remembering the 80s for what they were at the time vs. looking back at the 80s through what has become available.

i think the amount of contribution has a lot to do with the cyclical nature of pop culture though. people used to complain about how the 90s were bringing back the 70s, does it really seem odd that the next generation would bring back the 80s? the only reason i still have all my grunge discs is to pass them off to my niece when her generation inevitably brings back the 90s.

I think a lot of the 80's hate comes from the fact that most of the great music was fairly obscure. With the 60's, most people will agree that the best bands also happened to be some of the biggest.

Honestly, though, I really don't get the whole "were the 90's better than the 80's" thing. Decades are an arbitrary measure of time. Did music suddenly start to get "better" when January 1, 1990 rolled around? Did people stop making good music on December 31, 1979?
