True, but still, you can't expect every thread to go the way you want it to. If Urban comes back with another addition, I'll be more than willing to comment on that.

Seeing as the current discussion is whether or not the 80's or 60's were better, I'm going to comment about it. That's the way it works.

Well I guess I can't be hypcritical, considering the arguement spawned from an entry, like the In Rainbows arguement a few pages back.

just shut the fuck up. good god. get your head out of your arse and realize that the only person who cares about your opinion is you. you're not changing anything by consistently restating your opinions on the internet. you'll state yours, other people will state their opposing views and you'll continue restating until somebody closes the thread or you both get bored. it's completely and utterly fucking pointless. go post something that might actually be of use to someone, or if you're going to just fuck around, at least try to be funny about it. anything, anything but this fucking ego-wankery.

EDIT: that wasn't directed at anyone in particular, just this whole discussion.

Somebody didn't take their medication today.

Do you see the irony here?

Yeah but that has absolutely nothing to do with the argument. The issue is over quality of music, which has nothing to do with availability.

The term "generic was brought up and since most of the artists I mentioned were revolutionizing the whole music industry I took the term to mean "mainstream".

Now if we were discussing the quality of mainstream music, then I would agree, the sixties were far superior.
This is a given.
Quote:

Although we have to keep in mind, what gets played on the radio from the sixties now is very different from what was played back then. Jimi Hendrix, for example, wasn't all that popular back then compared to what he's grown to today.
Hendrix was very popular in the 60. Maybe not with the 12 year olds that went to see the Monkees play but he was a force in the 60's. Yes his popularity skyrocketed after Woodstock and his death but he was known. He was even played on AM radio.

And bands that may seem somewhat mainstream now, or at least very close to the surface of the underground, like The Velvet Underground, were very unpopular at the time.
VGPS by the Kinks didn't even chart and it's considered one of the best albums of the 60's. Likewise with Monks - Black Monk Time. We all know VU couldn't sell a record to their own mothers. There is a lot more great music out there from the 60's that even 99% of the people here haven't dicovered.

Quote:

In conclusion, timeframes are moot. Every decade has its fair share of great music, and ****.
I agree but I simply gave a preference and reasons to why. I know most here are not arguing with Poison, Duran Duran, Huey Lewis and Culture Club. I think most would agree that mainstream 80's sucked. What i'm saying is I heard a lot of these "alternative" "underground" "lesser known" artists and I do agree they are a lot better than the mainstream acts but I feel they don't hold a candle to the artists of the 60's.
Quote:

And in 50 years, on a forum just like this, ALL of our opinions will be obsolete, because fans of music from the 2030's will be arguing with people who thought the last good record ever made was "The Future" by the band ROBOTS, made in 2016.
The Future is a good song by the Robots but I like their song "The 80's Sucked" better. :D

It's hard work down in the irony mines, but someone has to do it.

Sigh, after going through this entire thread, I feel like Texas is a ****in' stagnant environment. Then again, I'm definitely not the only one who feels like that right? Lmfao...

Two (actually four) things I'm reminded of from all this-

1. My psychology teacher from my senior year at Keller High School is ****ing married to Dave Abbruzzese for God's sakes, and once spent an entire period showing us YouTube clips of his live shows. Quite annoying, as some of you can probably imagine...

2. I'm currently studying at MSU in Wichita Falls, TX. Guess what band is this city's pride n' freakin joy? BOWLING FOR SOUPPPP!!!! HOORAYY FOR SHIITTTT!!!!

3. John Cage kicks everybody's ass due to the fact that he even existed in the first place. Followed closely by Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. SLDJFSDJFSLD.

4. I am an Anteater.

In any case, this is a fantastic thread Urban. Or pointless. Or rediculously quarrelsome. Or none of the previously mentioned.

GOOD JOB!!!!! :yikes:

Let's not forget the servants of the devil that we all know and despise.
