It may just be because I almost never listen to the radio and I haven't watched MTV in years. I'm aware of a lot of bands because I read about them, but I pretty much never suffer through overplayed music any more.

The radio in the 60's and 70's was the best thing we had in most cases.

If you were more of a casual music fan and British you'd probably be listening to them.
