Just when you think you have a pretty damn good music collection, along comes another brilliantly well written and informed blog offering up yet another gem that gets you all hot and steamy. Blogs remind you that nothing is perfect and that life is all about the endeavour and hard work. Only then can you truly enjoy the spoils....and get some free shit if you are lucky.

#78. Sound Systems.

What better excuse has a man had than music; to buy shitloads of expensive gadgets and justify/play it against the fact that she has a wardrobe full of handbags and shoes? Sound systems can be built over many years and modified at any time. They can also sound the absolute balls and aurally rape any all in one systems. They also (after Football and the kids) become your pride and joy and you can take great pride in the fact that only you can 'tweak' the settings and have an excuse to call your missus 'tone deaf'.

Of course all the women in here will quite rightly state that men treat their gadgets better than their women but when I only have to press a button to see lights in front of my eyes and the room to shake, I will always take the lazy option.

You know it's a funny thing, I'm much more into music than wife but she's much more of the gadget person in our relationship and far more likely than me to buy expensive stereo components. I tend to spend my money on albums and shows before I can save up for that kind of thing.

I'm like you. I'll hang onto crappy headphones until they break and on the rare occasion that I use speakers, I hook up my old computer speakers to my pseudo-stereo (it's actually a CD recorder, but since I got a new piece of recording equipment, I use the old recorder for CD playback).

#77. John Peel. R.I.P

Although he has not been with us since 2004, his mark upon many has left an indelible print. Regarded by many as 'The Greatest Ever DJ', Peelie was genuinely a one off. Both self effacing and ridiculously entertaining, his late night shows shaped over two generations listening habits.

While most D.J's are perfectly happy pandering to to the masses and their paymasters, Peelie was ensconsed in his studio happily banging out everything from Hardcore Punk to Balkan Gypsy and getting off on all of it.

This is only the tip of the iceberg though. Peelie actively encouraged bands he deemed worthy to cut a few tracks at the legendary 'Maida Vale' studios that could be anything from first time listens to alternate cuts of fans favourites. These became the fabled 'Peel Sessions' and many of these are collectors items and indeed, are a perfect encapsulation of the time they were recorded.

John Peel influenced musicians and fans alike and his championing of anything off mainstream lead to bands such as Pink Floyd, T-Rex, Pulp and The Fall ( to name a few) getting well deserved airplay.

John Peel introduced me to so many bands such as : Tindersticks, The Cranes and The Orb that I would not have heard in those pre-internet days.

This has been done a thousand times before but this is Peelies favourite track of all time and a little thankyou from myself. The only Liverpool fan I could tolerate

The only person outside of my family i am comfortable calling a hero, a huge inspiration to me not only in music but in approach to life and in just being a bloody nice bloke to top it all off. The fact that i only ever caught his show a couple of times is sad, i remember them being fucking confusing for a young me but enjoyable, it's sad that i only realised just how much of my music taste i had him to thank for at the time of his death.
His approach to music was 'fuck whatever genre it is and whether the masses will appreciate it, if it's worthy it should have an audience', something i truly appreciate. R.I.P indeed, great inclusion Lee
