sleepy jack's lists

Instead of making a gigantic 100 thread and abandoning it I'm going to just do smaller lists and confine them to one thread. First one is my favorite 25 lyricists.

25. Nick Drake
http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/43377.jpg

Sometimes just a quiet folk singer with straightforward lyrics, other times like Robert Frost with a guitar Nick Drake's seems like hes almost humming the words in his quiet way. Be he asking if you'd love him through the winter or singing about cocaine blues, he always means it.

Quote:

I never felt magic crazy as this,
I never saw moons
Knew the meaning of the sea.
I never held emotion in the palm of my hand
Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree,
But now you're here, brighten my northern sky.

24. Jenn Ghetto

Raw, sad, and no one's reading this. It's Jenn Ghetto.

Quote:

Saying sad things that don't make sense
Can just make you look like a liar,
Don't convince me that your right
About some fear I have of heartache,
So I'll make you just one promise
That I'll never regret this.

I bets i know who'll be first...

I'm just hoping this doesn't turn into some generic singer-songwriter fellating contest. I wanna see someone who was appraised for their musicianship rather than lyrical efforts.

Predictions for future posts:
Elliott Smith
Conor Oberst
Morrissey
Jeff Buckley

...and so on. It's gonna get real boring real quick.

Because Elliott Smith has no talent musicianship wise.

23. Owen Ashworth

Be he referencing the Smiths, quoting Morrissey or imitating Morrissey. Owen is always a pastor of mope with no hope of being the true pope but he tries and I appreciate his quiet confessions.

Quote:

It's always tight at the end of the month
Until that check comes there's nothing for lunch,
I'm sick of all my stuff and halfway broke
To tired to pretend that i'm not sick of my friends.
Some days I'm sorry that I ever moved here
Some days I think about moving back in with my folks,
Some days I think about moving up north
The rent is cheaper I can have a house and a porch,
To watch the rain
Walk out in the rain,
Stand under the rain.
To watch the rain
Walk out in the rain,
Stand under the rain.
And let Seattle wash me
And let Seattle wash me

His solo career never really showcased any particular musical talents. Shame, because he was the real genius of Heatmiser. If he isn't #1 I will be very surprised.

sleepy jack 09-01-2008 04:09 PM

How can you listen to this: YouTube - King's Crossing and say only Heatmiser showcased his musical talents? That's ridiculous, he was writing, producing and playing everything on his own albums, with Heatmiser he was just their guitarist playing mostly power chord rock songs. He didn't even write half the stuff, Neil Gust did.

lucifer_sam 09-01-2008 04:13 PM

You're misinterpret what I'm trying to say. He was a great songwriter and lyricist (obviously), but the stuff he wrote was technically simple in comparison to his earlier work with Heatmiser. And no, it wasn't all power chords.

THAT is obviously an exception.
