CDs - Organised loosely by genre and then alphabetically.
Mp3s - Alphabetical.

I'm ridiculously OCD about things being in order and the thought of me going "I want to listen to *X* today" and not being able to find the CD in less than 5 seconds fills me with horror.

Use Foobar, it'll solve all your mp3 finding problems ;)

I actually have Foobar on my laptop. I think I used it once, ages ago, to convert some files or something and then left it to gather virtual dust. I'll go have a look at that at some point then!

Are downloads part of your collection?

I own a pretty good-sized CD collection of over 1,300 unique albums. They are all ripped on my PC and I thoroughly enjoy listening to them through my various devices.

I recently bought 3 songs from iTunes and a bunch of compilations from Bandcamp (along with artists who post their work for free). I originally didn't want the downloads to become mixed up with the CD rips that I have made, but I'm now seeing the joy in having all my music (free or purchased) play at random. Are downloads from iTunes/Bandcamp/etc. part of your collection?

EDIT: I'm not sure how my question can be conceived as organizing, as I asked clearly if downloads are part of your overall music collection. Searches on Google showed nothing of use, and I just wanted other users' opinions and such.

I need to just buy a pack of CD-Rs and spend a whole day burning the digital albums I have. I prefer CD as my format, but I end up listening digitally most of the time anyways, which there isn't anything wrong with.

Currently I have two small stacks of CDs I swap constantly through next to my stereo system, while a lot more sit on a turning rack in the corner.

stack them up on a shelf running out of space LOL

Used to always order my CDs in the holder alphabetically by artist and chronologically within each artist's section. It has since become chaos as CDs get taken out and misplaced, moving with loose CDs and such. My collection has dwindled away.

^this. :/

I organize them in alphabetical order front to back, CDs in a shoebox, albums in a milk crate. I had so many CDs I switched from shoeboxes to a Penguin CD rack. I took them out of the shoebox and placed them in the same order they were onto a CD rack. I had them going in alphabetical order from right to left. Someone I know (who has apparently has OCD) flipped out on me because there were arranged backwards. I don't know, it made sense at the time. I just chalk it up to another thing I do backwards from everyone else. (:

No physical element is necessary, just a waste of space.
