Eh... I don't organize my CDs intensively because I don't use them. They're placed randomly between several large CD books. Because of the fact that I ripped all of them to my computer, the only organization I do is on my computer, by Genre > Artist > Albums > Songs
If it's classic, it gets its own folder and the above organization applies from there.

To me that makes the most sense for my situation.

bjornfjordnord 10-26-2009 09:43 AM

One giant folder called MP3s, each album separated by artist and album. Takes upwards of thirty seconds to just load the MP3s folder due to the number of albums in there.

Pillowmint 10-26-2009 06:18 PM

ITunes... I have only purchased a total of two CD's (They are both Nightwish albums not available on ITUnes), and feel kinda bad about it, but... oh well...

TheCunningStunt 01-11-2010 10:17 AM

Alphabetically FTW.

Arya Stark 01-11-2010 10:24 AM

:3 My CDs are alpabetized from right to left.
Everything I organized alphabetically is from right to left.
It just seems easier.

OceanAndSilence 01-11-2010 10:28 AM

alphabetised by artists name at first, then the music i listen to most stays at the top of the stack. every 3 months i get a cauldron and chant to voodoo duppies and melt the music in it. i then harvest the "mystical musical mist" unto myself

p.s. i chose other

Phillyboy 01-13-2010 06:43 PM

I pretty much listen to everything on Ipod, so alphabetically. If there is an album that I like all the songs on or maybe 1 or 2 I'm not crazy about, I will make that album a compilation, so that's where I use to find my favorites.

I prefer CD quality, but mine is busted so the Ipod it is.

ElephantSack 01-14-2010 02:09 PM

I used to do the alphabetical thing, but now I just leave what I listen to most at the time or whoever I have the most music from at the easiest access.

I used to file everything alphabetically, but it was annoying to have Beatles albums, which I never listen to, cluttering up the top shelf, not to mention the embarrasing albums like the Joan Armatrading album a friend bought for me. So now I organize everything based on:
1. How much I like it
2. How often I listen to it

#2 is more important. I'm extremely lazy and don't feel like wading through the bottom shelf everytime I want to listen to XTC or X-Ray Spex, which is pretty often, so I just put those albums up on the top shelf. Problem solved.

It's also more interesting because I'm the only one who can find anything, unless someone else knows my tastes pretty well and can guess that Who's Next will be somewhere near the top while Live At Leeds will be somewhere closer to the floor.

yea i dont feel like reading everyones post to answer your question... i just order them alphabetically. Its just easiest that way... I wouldnt ever be able to order them by how much i like them because the bands i like change like each week.

Musefreak14 01-16-2010 08:35 PM

i do alphabetically by artist, then albumize (is that a word?) chronologically within the artist.
in my CDs, i have two piles. mixed cds and one-artist cds. the t ypical cds are sorted by what i listen to most frequently, piled on top of everything else which is in no particular order. my burned cds are roughly chronological..based on when i made them.
my burned cds are also labelled with emotions that give me a clue as to whats on the cd, so i keep them loosely together

midnight rain 01-16-2010 08:37 PM

Alphabetically all the way. If I were to sort it by genre, I would constantly be forgetting which genre I had put what in. Plus, I'd probably have to label somewhere where each genre begins and ends. Too much work for me.

scottsy 01-16-2010 10:16 PM

Well, nowadays, my Mp3 player does most of the organising for me to be honest..... alphabwtically by artist and alphabetically within the artist's given folder.... :-)

rammetal7 06-17-2010 10:55 PM

OP, are you talking about where I put the music files.

Rhovanion 06-18-2010 05:00 AM

I organize my music genre wise and then alphabetically within each genre.

When it comes to my physical collection, the order in which the genres are placed is down to what genres I like the most.

On my computer the genre folders are sorted alphabetically.

TheFolkslave 06-18-2010 06:48 AM

I organize my music genre wise and inside the genre I organize them into band and release date.

Nadia 06-18-2010 07:19 AM

I have most of my music on iTunes, but my CD's are done alphabetically by genre, and if I have more than one of a certain band, I organise them by release date :)

1) this music sucks, waste of time!
2) this music is good, i should listen it for a while!
3) this music is great, i should download it!

That isn't organizing your music. That's deciding what music you're going to get and deciding whether you should keep it..

Tea Supremacist 06-19-2010 05:56 AM

CDs - Organised loosely by genre and then alphabetically.
Mp3s - Alphabetical.

I'm ridiculously OCD about things being in order and the thought of me going "I want to listen to *X* today" and not being able to find the CD in less than 5 seconds fills me with horror.

This thread is about organizing your physical collection. Although it's pretty clear when you read the OP, I guess people got it wrong anyhow and so I've changed the title of the thread slightly.

The organization of digital music libraries has it's own thread :

Use Foobar, it'll solve all your mp3 finding problems ;)

I actually have Foobar on my laptop. I think I used it once, ages ago, to convert some files or something and then left it to gather virtual dust. I'll go have a look at that at some point then!

Are downloads part of your collection?

I own a pretty good-sized CD collection of over 1,300 unique albums. They are all ripped on my PC and I thoroughly enjoy listening to them through my various devices.

I recently bought 3 songs from iTunes and a bunch of compilations from Bandcamp (along with artists who post their work for free). I originally didn't want the downloads to become mixed up with the CD rips that I have made, but I'm now seeing the joy in having all my music (free or purchased) play at random. Are downloads from iTunes/Bandcamp/etc. part of your collection?

EDIT: I'm not sure how my question can be conceived as organizing, as I asked clearly if downloads are part of your overall music collection. Searches on Google showed nothing of use, and I just wanted other users' opinions and such.

Tristan_Geoff 01-02-2016 11:29 PM

I need to just buy a pack of CD-Rs and spend a whole day burning the digital albums I have. I prefer CD as my format, but I end up listening digitally most of the time anyways, which there isn't anything wrong with.

Currently I have two small stacks of CDs I swap constantly through next to my stereo system, while a lot more sit on a turning rack in the corner.

Norg 01-04-2016 01:34 PM

stack them up on a shelf running out of space LOL

Mondo Bungle 01-04-2016 09:41 PM

Used to always order my CDs in the holder alphabetically by artist and chronologically within each artist's section. It has since become chaos as CDs get taken out and misplaced, moving with loose CDs and such. My collection has dwindled away.

Neapolitan 01-04-2016 10:02 PM

^this. :/

I organize them in alphabetical order front to back, CDs in a shoebox, albums in a milk crate. I had so many CDs I switched from shoeboxes to a Penguin CD rack. I took them out of the shoebox and placed them in the same order they were onto a CD rack. I had them going in alphabetical order from right to left. Someone I know (who has apparently has OCD) flipped out on me because there were arranged backwards. I don't know, it made sense at the time. I just chalk it up to another thing I do backwards from everyone else. (:

MazilynLives 01-05-2016 03:59 PM

No physical element is necessary, just a waste of space.

Are you serious or are you quoting John Cusack's character, Rob Gordon, from High Fidelity?

... so anyway in the middle of the movie Rob Gordon has something like a mid-life crisis and starts arranging his record collection time-wise, according to acquisition, and starts reminiscing over a pile of records.

I see! I could dig that....John Cusack always has that sortof "here I am standing here with my mouth open a lot being all stressed...and you can't really tell whether I'm young or old because I still have black hair and really undistinguished features".

I swear he said that once...in an interview..:shycouch:

I've got all my CD's sorted alphabetically, but I get around the "clutter" problem by having two sections: My favourite bands/artist in one section, the rest in the other.
