it's definitely worth having an impeccably tagged music collection. and once you get to that point, keeping it clean is quite easy as you download new stuff...

my next goal is to rate every track in my collection. so far i've rated about 3,500 out of 25,000. i have a long way to go

anyone looking to try a new music player should give this one a go, it's not very well known yet but it has good potential. it's no foobar, but hey, not everyone can be the best

I always swear to myself that I'm going to rate all of my songs, but I think too much about how to define each star and where all songs lie into relation to one another, get stressed out, and don't bother.

well i keep it all very simple:

1: intro, interlude, or some other track i never want to hear. not a rating of quality. these get skipped over during shuffle play using foo_skip.

2: i hate the track. very few 2's in my library, but there are a few.

3: meh. i'll listen to it when playing the whole album, but don't want to hear it in shuffle.

4: i dig it.

5: yes! definitely a favorite.

i also have a heart symbol in my playlists for my absolute top tracks.

as far as where songs belong in relation to one another - i rate songs in terms of the genre/style i feel it belongs to. trying to decide if this space ambient track is better than that post punk track is just impossible, so i rate it in terms of similar music that pops into my head. because of this, i tend to shuffle either individual artists or specific genre/style categories when i'm rating tracks.

i have global hotkeys set up for all this, so i just rate as i listen. it's a slow process, but i'll get there eventually. it's really nice being able to make a playlist of 4/5 rated tracks and only hear songs i know and love

I don't like shuffling. It kind of rips the intention of a musician apart.
But It must be said, some albums aren't worth listening from top to bottom.
And therefore... Mixtapes

Altough the person above is definately a bot, I'd like to reply to this.

There's one thing I dislike about VLC and that's the fact that it doesn't give you the total playlist time. I use it for video all the time though, rocks.

I got an iPod touch for Christmas - that was pretty exciting. It was a major upgrade from my age-old dinosaur iPod video

I'm too lazy to figure out Amarok or download something else, so I just use rhythmbox.
But seriously, could they make Amarok any less confusing? when I play a file, It plays no sound and skips through it really fast.

Once again just to show how often Rhythmbox is amazing with song lengths:
