Starting a record label

Hey everyone, I'm in several bands and we just got to the point were we can manage professional production on our own. I am starting up a label because i like the DIY approach. I have all the business **** down, but its not worth going through with until we have some sort of fan base. Any marketing ideas? What is the best way to get your music heard by a broad audience?

get Pitchfork to review your albums

I'd just send free albums to blog owners and webzines and ask them if they could review it.

There are two ways to go about it. Either the DIY route of getting to know people who work for large magazines and reviewing websites (obviously takes a long time) or theres the professional route of employing a PR company (takes alot of money)... places like Kerrang, RockSound, Pitchfork etc etc will usually only review releases that have come to them through one of these methods. Just a demo through the door will rarely have any effect.

For sure, just don't do it before you got a good product to show for.

Word, that sounds like a good idea. I know well enough from the bands I had when I was in high school that you never put out a product until it is perfect. I have some connections to writers for big magazines so that's a start. I suppose I'll just see what happens from there.
