that may well be but after having frequented music forums for 6-7 years now i've seen this exact same thread topic started dozens of times. they might continue to troll / remain obtuse and narrow minded but some lurker might actually clue in to the fact that nothing 'went away' just that as you get older you have to take care of every element of yourself, including what you listen to. it also serves as a warning to today's kids of what they'll turn into if they chose to remain stagnant and expect to be spoon fed great music until they die

as for the MTV thing, it's not going to go away, but with youtube why the hell would it focus on playing music videos all day like it did when it started? who would honestly watch uncontrolled videos on tv when you can pick and choose just what you want to see and hear with a click of the mouse? the 'evil' suits managed to wrap their heads around this idea pretty quickly...

Well, rock did stop progressing artistically in the late 70's after progressive rock was no longer something fashionable to listen to, and yet there are so many posters here who seem utterly perplexed of why "rock" and its various subgenres seem no longer relevant to the masses. Sure, there are always good underground acts in every generation which continue to carry certain banners and try their best to make interesting music, but yeah...

Personally, while I agree that pop (in all its form) has always charted highest since the 1950's, I'm also of the opinion that the kind of music people tend to react positively to on the radio these days is music which doesn't require much of an attention span in order for them to appreciate it. No thinking or contemplation involved, just the ability to sorta half-hear it is enough for feeble-minded listeners to get their kicks. The depth of an ocean is traded out for a kiddy pool and complete accessibility on the part of the listener.

Also, in regards to the facts that ADHD is more prevalent these days and that there are so many different forms of entertainment now that divide people's attention, many folks (particularly the teenagers who were born back in the early 90's) lack the ability to appreciate or focus on anything fully, and as a result are missing out on so much great music that lies around out there for the picking.

Sure, you can blame the record companies or the media if you want (points have been made already about them), but to overlook the degenerating attention span in people that has manifested over the last century (I'd say since television came about actually, and to some degree the radio before that) would be quite foolish indeed.

So basically the media is entertaining the simple minded who want a remote control to bring them a beer. With that being the case it would also be stated that with music the best way to make a buck would be to remove your brain. Then to wrap this statment up it would also be noted that these same simple minded ppl are also the ones putting out the music.

So long as you dont blame it on my gen. I would like to think that we still have some values.

ADHD is not more prevalent now than in the past, it's just more frequently diagnosed.

I'm going to fix this

Its more incorrectly diagnosed, because those lazy coke heads from the 70's don't have parenting skills. They'd rather drug up their kids so they can nurse their hangover with a mimosa and have the Au Pair play with the little zombie.

Don't have kids because your life is boring folks. Just kill yourself.

Edit:

There is nothing wrong with music. If you think there is, thats jsut a problem with you.

I didn't say it was accurately diagnosed. I agree with you that it's way, way over-diagnosed. I was just pointing out that people as a group aren't any more prone to ADHD than they were in the past, it's just that more doctors are slapping people with that label.

TheBig3 01-08-2009 08:41 AM

so defensive Mr. Zoon, I wasn't implying you had it wrong, just a refining so people couldn't misunderstand. I thought you might be under the same impression.

Without getting too far into it, it has to do with the medical industy and law suits, but as far as it leading people to rap, or pop or whatever, I don't think the theory holds water.
