im 26 but an enormous grunge fan it made me want to play guitar in the early 90's and i still do to this day. I dont play grunge music but i am super glad that it was around while i was growing up. you did have good bands like genesis tom petty and tool was around metallica there were some other good ones. Then came the Seattle music and it was so strong to me in comparison to the other songs even at 11 or 12 that i had to have it. Not because someone told me it was cool but because the sound was fresh and thats what stuck with me.

But back to the subject... After the mid 90's you and i both know that rap music stole the spotlight..

Huge Foetus fan. Jim Thirlwell is easily among my top 4 or 5 favorite musicians of all time and one of the biggest influences on my own music.

I do agree with you that rap has been ascending as rock has been descending, just like rock ascended as jazz descended, but I see no problem with that. It's just the cycle of music. I enjoy a lot of rap just like I enjoy a lot of rock just like I enjoy a lot of jazz. Rock isn't going to disappear anytime soon, it's just going to get a little more underground just like jazz has done.

I should also add that I agree with Rainard Jalen as well. The real chart-topping music is just plain old pop, and it's been that way for decades. I don't see it changing in the foreseeable future.

why does it matter so much that the music that moved us as teenagers isn't cool to other teenagers once we hit into our 20s?

i agree there is not super good music right now. However i do like modest mouse and some of the rock few as well as a few others.
