Spotify

What is Spotify? - Spotify

An absolute golden find for me and it will be for anyone who's into music. The concept is similar to Last FM in a way, as it has a selection of internet radio stations. The two main selling points however are the sheer scale of full albums you can listen to (even a fair amount of obscure stuff, i'm listening to the Part Chimp album i've been looking for on it right now) which is a godsend when you just want to sample something before you download it, and the ability to make playlists and send then to other peeps on it. Also good for accomadating having my flatmates round who don't like my music! The only downside is the adverts that pop up every now and again but i can look past that.

Normally you'd have to pay unless you have an invite and luckily i have 10 right now so anyone who wants to check it out just PM me with an email address and i'll send one to you. Daaaamn good music program.

jackhammer 01-13-2009 06:09 AM

Cool bananas for this. I've always wanted to hear Richard Wright's solo stuff. Now I can :D

You can scrobble to last.fm too.

Piss Me Off 01-13-2009 06:21 AM

It all runs incredibly well considering its still in its beta period. Best thign for music i've found since the Hype Machine.

Mojo 03-17-2009 10:26 AM

I just heard about Spotify about 10 minutes ago and have a working account already. God bless the internet! Trust me its very easy to find out how all on your own but I'll be happy to point people in the right direction via PM.

LoathsomePete 03-17-2009 11:21 AM

Hmm, that's odd, it's not available in my country yet... but this is America I'm not use to this shabby treatment :( and I'm a Canadian - Brit living in the US.

Mojo 03-18-2009 01:23 PM

This is completely free to register now if you're in the UK, which is odd because when I signed up it asked me for an invite code and I had to find a link to bypass it. If you're in the UK i defnitely recommend getting on it. I'm lovng the hell out of this.

Piss Me Off 03-19-2009 02:12 PM

I think there's ways to get around the american block, proxy sites or something like that, i'm not too trained in the technical side to it all..

Comus 05-28-2009 07:42 AM

Had this for ages now, was going to hype it a bit, but it already has a thread, anyways you really have to get this if you're in Europe.

jackhammer 05-28-2009 01:17 PM

I pretty much forgot that I had this but got it on now as it has some John Martyn stuff I just cannot find anywhere on the net

LoathsomePete 05-28-2009 01:23 PM

Curses it still isn't available in the United States, what is the ****?

LoathsomePete 07-06-2011 01:43 PM

Necromantic bump!

Spotify is coming to the U.S. Sign up to get your invite now - Spotify

For all you unl337 people who haven't found ways to circumvent the regional restraints, now you don't have to.

___ 07-06-2011 05:15 PM

And two years later... still unavailable in the USofA.

Lame sauce. =/

I've found a way to circumvent the blockage of Hulu in Canada. It doesn't work for Spotify though, and although they say they're working on making it available here, I know how ****ed up the CRTC is. That's our version of the FCC, pretty much. For all I know, neither Hulu nor Spotify will be available here until I'm dead and gone. The CRTC frustrates me to no end. I live less than 3 hours away from the US border, too. Ugh.

Chrysalis 07-06-2011 07:32 PM

Signed up for this. It's about time! :D

Electrophonic Tonic 07-06-2011 09:18 PM

This sounds great... but it's gonna take a lot to pull me away from Grooveshark

Blarobbarg 07-06-2011 09:46 PM

Signed up. Because you have no idea how much I want to listen to full albums at work.

noise 07-14-2011 08:17 PM

Now available in the US!

Free accounts are still invite-only, but you can use this cheat:
How to Get Spotify Free Without an Invite

This is a very impressive service. Sure, they don't have all the rare crap we usually listen to, but for all that "novelty" music that you want to hear once in a while, it's a great service.

The free service has occasional ads, but for $10/mo you can get rid of them, and enable iPhone support as well. Good stuff.

Zer0 07-16-2011 07:13 PM

Still not available in Ireland :( bunch of wankstains

Chrysalis 07-16-2011 07:25 PM

For some reason, I haven't received my invite. :/

Also, is there a limitation to how much that you can listen to (like Pandora limits it's free users to 40 hours of listening a month)?

Sansa Stark 07-16-2011 07:26 PM

Click mah link! It gives you an invite code right away.

for free account it's 20 hours/month and a limit of 5 plays per song. plus there are ads.

for premium it's totally unlimited.

but i can't for the life of me figure out how to rip the audio files from the cache. they have some pretty rare stuff!

Chrysalis 07-19-2011 01:09 PM

My invite just arrived. This is a really impressive service so far!

LoathsomePete 07-19-2011 01:51 PM

I ended up getting the Unlimited $4.99 a month service package which so far has been pretty awesome. Sure there's some things that I haven't been able to find, but this will probably severely cut down on my downloading usage.

Burning Down 07-19-2011 03:29 PM

Damn! I'm missing out on the fun!

Chrysalis 07-19-2011 04:37 PM

I'm surprised at the catalog size here! I would never expect some artists to be here. Now all I need is something to get a premium account.

Edit: Ok, it's official. I love this.

music_phantom13 07-20-2011 07:28 PM

Paloma... thank you so much! You are like a god to me right now. I've been waiting for an invite since the day after spotify came here... didn't realize I could get in that easily.

noise 07-20-2011 07:44 PM

i coughed up $10 to try out the premium service. it's pretty damn sweet.

i heard a great song the other night. normally, i'd get on my music site and download all that band's albums in flac, tag them, get album art, throw it all into foobar, transcode the flac to mp3, and throw it on my ipod to check it out while at work. even if i didn't end up liking the albums very much, i probably wouldn't delete them out of my music library after all that hard work...

instead, i opened Spotify on my PC and on my ipod. my PC immediately started talking to my ipod wirelessly. i selected the band's 3 albums, threw them into a playlist, and "synced" it to my ipod (what actually happened is my PC told my ipod to cache the audio data for those albums). i listened to them at work, and decided i'm not too impressed. so i just added the one song i liked to my Spotify favorites, and deleted the playlist with the rest :)

the selection is good, the speed is good, and it's easy to use. it's great for listening to music i only care to enjoy once in a great while, or for checking out new music before downloading them from What.

i'll see how much i use it this month, but i think i'll end up keeping my subscription...

Miss Tickle 07-21-2011 03:56 AM

Spotify is good, it's a good concept and useful, but i've not had an experience as glowing as you guys...Could just be a UK thing though...
They've put tonnes of restrictions on the free version, which is sad as you now only listen to a song 5 times and you're basically forced to join as you've built up playlists etc.
Also there are so many adverts now it's unbearable.
There are many artists who don't have songs on there though
Also it tends to crash a lot, both my friends premium account and on the free one - in varying locations so can't just be internet connections.
The search functionality isn't very accurate
I will start paying as it's a good way to get music, but surely they'll lose loads in advertising now though, but better for artists who put their songs on here.

It's not available here yet. I can get on the site and browse a bit but I can't stream media.

BastardofYoung 07-21-2011 08:12 PM

I am in Canada, I got it. You can download the client, but you have to have somebody from the USA sign you up. I just had a friend in the states make me an account and send me the details. Then I logged onto the application and it works for me.

Just get an invite e-mailed it to you and forward the e-mail to somebody in the States you know who can do it. They create the account and give you the log in details and you log in.

noise 07-21-2011 08:21 PM

This might work for you (sign up using a UK proxy):

How to Get Spotify Free Without an Invite

Strayed 07-21-2011 08:40 PM

I'm kind of liking it aside from the selection being a little skimpy in some areas. If they fix that I might actually pay for ad removal and use it instead of pirating everything.

The Monkey 07-30-2011 03:02 AM

Surprised it took them this long to launch in America, over here it's an integral part of the music culture at this point.

It used to be that the free version was unlimited (but with ads), but that changed a few months ago. Now you can't listen to more than ten hours/months, which is a real bitch. I guess the $5/month fee for the premium version is pretty small though.

Before using you should however be aware that Spotify has some questionably policies towards the indie companies. They pay then a lot less than the big four.

14232949 08-31-2011 03:17 PM

Hey guys, I'm looking to add to my people's list on Spotify.
I've synchronized it with my Facebook, but my friends have really bad tastes in music.
So, I was wondering if some of you guys wouldn't mind sharing your usernames, so I can check out what your listening to, and maybe find some new artists/songs.

TheBig3 08-31-2011 04:31 PM

You can friend me on FB if you want: Diego Molina

Not sure how to friend folks on Spotify.

Blarobbarg 09-05-2011 08:21 AM

Hey does anyone have a clue how to scrobble from Spotify? I saw that you have to go into your preferences... the thing is though, I can't seem to find my preferences. >_<

Does this have anything to do with the fact that my Spotify is the free version? Or am I just stupid?

djchameleon 09-05-2011 08:37 AM

Preferences is under Edit and it's right there, you can't miss it.

The Last.fm log in box is right at the top.

Blarobbarg 09-05-2011 09:43 AM

Ohhh I see it. Yep, I was just being an idiot, as always. Thanks Cham. :)
