Sorry I can't post links yet. But you'll find Pinks 'feel good time' and Nirvanas 'stay away' on youtube.

Just my perspective.
I think Nirvana and Pixies are about on the same field IMO.

Killing Joke are good but that guys vocals are grating to me, Big Black are just one of them massively overrated hipster bands that are called the best band from Chicago by people who are too "cool" to admit that Smashing Pumpkins earn that title.

BTW Pink does a good job of hiding the truth LOL. She changes everything except the vocals in the chorus and and the chords of course...

You, sir, get a cookie for everything you just said.

I have three kinds: chocolate chip, troll and whiskey.

As my mum would say, nobody's better they're just different; but she's not here and Pixies took the money, did the reunion tour, did the 'best of', did the DVD and then f*cked off so f*ck them

Granted Cobain's love of the Pixies is well-documented but I could never hear the similarity outside of the quiet/loud dynamic which was surely common at the time anyway? How hard would it be to play in a 4-piece rock band and not let your influences (predominantly 4-piece rock bands) bleed through into the songs? Kurt Cobain had brilliant taste in music which was integral to Nirvana being brilliant IMO, had love for classic metal as well as punk and indie.

One of those (up til that point) rare cases of having the indie credentials but also the pop hooks to make major bucks. Course 'indie' and 'Nirvana-esque' are just marketing demographics now but whatever.

I can't believe this thread has been talking mostly about Nirvana's influences and no-ones mentioned the Meat Puppets yet.

One of the best CD's i've ever owned is a free CD that came with the NME with some of his influences on. Anyone who knows my taste well will see just how much this influenced me...

1. Mudhoney - Touch Me I'm Sick
2. Rites Of Spring - For Want Of
3. The Faith - Subject to Change
4. Iggy Pop - Louie Louie/Hang On Sloopy
5. Melvins - Gluey Porch Treatments
6. Butthole Surfers - Sweat Loaf
7. MDC - John Wayne Was a Nazi
8. Gang Of Four - At Home He's a Tourist
9. The Slits - Typical Girls
10. PJ Harvey - Dress
11. The Vaselines - Molly's Lips
12. Leadbelly - Where Did You Sleep Last Night?
13. Bad Brains - Banned In D.C

Actually typing this i've realised i still haven't got any bloody Vaselines stuff.

I agree that Big Black aren't the best Chicago band (though I do like them), but Smashing Pumpkins? No way.
