Bands you missed seeing live

What bands do you regret not seeing live, bands you had the chance to see not bands you would never have been able to see i.e The Beatles or The Doors Etc
Mine are:
Dire Straits (unashamidly one of my favourite all time bands)
Rage against the machine....yes i know they reformed and toured but i was working abroard :-(

ProggyMan 03-07-2009 03:05 PM

I was gonna see the Avett Brothers but I have to go on a Midrasha retreat instead.

Janszoon 03-07-2009 03:08 PM

Two big ones for me:

Swans—I really wanted to go but I was really strapped for cash at the time and couldn't afford it. Unfortunately it turned out to be their last tour and they broke up shortly afterwards.

Godflesh—I had plans to see them on one of their rare North American tours but unfortunately Justin Broadrick had some kind of breakdown right before they were supposed to leave England and broke up the band.

JukeBoxHero 03-07-2009 03:09 PM

I had a chance on September 20, 2007 to see the Dave Matthews Band, didn't get to go, went to see Devo the next night, Sept. 21, I wish I could've seen the Dave Matthews Band, but I have no regrets about seeing Devo, they were amazing.

Surell 03-07-2009 03:12 PM

Nine Inch Nails with Queens of the Stone Age. I also missed a P Funk show once, but I caught them before anyway. I'm hoping they'll come back a third time around.

gunnels 03-07-2009 03:17 PM

Reel big Fish came to Nash not to long ago, but I couldn't get in because the venue was 18+

Also I had the chance to see Muse live once, but I didn't even know who they were at the time so I didn't go.

Bulldog 03-07-2009 03:40 PM

I could have seen Nick Cave, David Bowie, New Order and Elvis Costello live over the years, missing out on all of them for varying reasons. Given that they're four of my favourites, and three of them probably won't play live in the UK again, those were pretty glaring misses there. Oh well.

I hate 18+ shows.

Which three do you think won't play in the UK again? I would think the UK would be the most likely place for any and all of them to play since all of them except Nick Cave are from there and he pretty much launched his career there.

Me too. Give me 21+ any day of the week.

Farfisa 03-07-2009 03:47 PM

I missed seeing Silver Apples a couple months back. Damn, did I really want to go too.

Well, David Bowie's as good as retired these days, Elvis Costello's sworn never to play in the UK again, and I think New Order have split (or at least Peter Hook's done with them, and a Hookless New Order just isn't the same thing to me).

JukeBoxHero 03-07-2009 03:52 PM

I miss Foreigner about every 6 months, they're always at the Emerald Queen, but it's a casino, so I can't get in.

I'm to young to be able to have had the ability to have seen any great 70s or 80s band in their prime(although with Arnel Pineda Journey still does great), hopefully one of these days Modest Mouse or the Killers make it back to Washington.

I'm going to miss out on seeing Britney Spears at the Tacoma Dome in April, LMAO.

Ah. Makes more sense now. When did Elvis Costello swear to never play there again and why?

I think it was around this time last year. Can't remember exactly why he's not touring in Blighty again - he's probably got a bone to pick with this country's music industry or something. Shame really, I'd love to have seen him play over here.

Whatever it was I bet he'll play there again. He's a cranky bastard with a history of shooting of his mouth and then going back on what he said.

The Prophet 03-07-2009 04:18 PM

The one that really sticks in my craw, is a triple bill Metallica, (even though I am not actually a fan), Alice in Chains (last show in Vancouver...bye Layne) and Days of the New, another band dissolved by drugs, though I think Meeks is still hanging on powered by Meth.

Also, Johnny Cash in Vancouver a year before his death. That one will always bother me. Missing that was a chance never to be repaired...

Gareth Brown 03-07-2009 04:25 PM

Converge at Camden underworld.

dac 03-07-2009 05:46 PM

So many, but notably The Strokes, Sigur Ros, The Mars Volta and Radiohead (though I saw them last summer so it's ok)

mr dave 03-07-2009 05:55 PM

i missed soundgarden in '94 by 200 kilometers.

was supposed to see metallica / RHCP / beck and a bunch of other bands in seattle for some festival gig in the summer of 2000, ended up sleeping.

the reason i was in seattle was a less than legit college work program thing, was supposed to be there for 10 days ended up there for 3 months - also cost me my one chance to see the smashing pumpkins (pretty sure it was their final show outside of chicago).

missed fantomas by a week in montreal in 2005. only found out they were playing while on the way to see a QOTSA show (lived in ottawa at the time).

missed GWAR in 2003 because no one would go with me and i couldn't get time off work. - same for beastie boys and ministry (different gigs).

jackhammer 03-07-2009 05:56 PM

There was a glimmer of a chance to see Pink Floyd in 1994 but my first son was due that year so I had to decline. Little did I know it was their last tour.

Fields Of The Nephilim played localy in 1991 but I missed that for some reson or another.

Porcupine Tree played at a venue a short bus ride away 18 months ago but I only found out about it next day :(

Flipping that over, I was lucky to get tickets for Ministry's last tour in October last year as they sold out very quickly and also Killing Joke last year on only 3 dates in the UK.

ProggyMan 03-07-2009 06:34 PM

Oh, and Aesop Rock at the Fillmore about a month ago last year,

sweet_nothing 03-07-2009 06:37 PM

Radiohead: They played Houston a week before I became a big fan, ****.

Dr. Octagon vs Dr. Doom: Kool Keith did a show in Austin last Thursday and I couldnt find a ride.

Bob Dylan: He played 3 nights in Dallas and I didnt find out until a couple days later, they should of sent me a memo or something.

And now I really really want to Flight of the Conchords in Houston, but the tickets sold out almost as soon as they went on sale, now I have to come up with a couple hundred dollars to buy some tickets off ebay.

Surell 03-07-2009 06:47 PM

I also missed Gaslight Anthem, who I hear puts on a good show. It was probably cheap, too, since it was at this local club.

The Boy 03-07-2009 08:28 PM

The Smiths, T.Rex, Roxy Music, Ziggy/Aladdin Sane era David Bowie, Velvet Underground

Crystal Castles
Primal Scream
Daft Punk
Metronomy

mainly missed out by my funds falling through.

Yer pretty feckin' old, eh?

I missed out on a few concerts I wanted to go to since I've been at college, namely Band of Horses & They Might Be Giants. There's more on the way though, might have to miss out on Dinosaur Jr. in April. :(

Alfred 03-07-2009 10:29 PM

Ummm, let's see:

Every damn opportunity because my dad wouldn't feel "right" about letting me see most of the bands I like.

mr. goth glam 03-08-2009 08:51 AM

Well, I missed Pearl Jam's first apperance in VA in about a decade this past summer.

I'm still kind of annoyed about that.

Yeah, I could see that, though I don't consider me or my crowd teenybopper. Unless you just hate kids.

swim 03-08-2009 01:57 PM

If good bands are playing it usually doesn't pull out a bunch of 14 year olds. I hate age limit shows that I can't manage to sneak into.

But my big regret is not being able to see Slint play Spiderland.

kniff0311 03-08-2009 03:14 PM

i wish i could have been around when pearl jam and nirvana were grinding it out in the early 90's

The Cat 03-08-2009 04:03 PM

Also had a chance to see Jimmy Barnes while i was in Australia and did not go...Kicked myself for that one:bonkhead:

Hating kids is only part of it. ;)

The biggest problem is that it usually makes the simple act of having a drink more of a hassle. For example, I went to some punk show at the Fireside Bowl in Chicago a couple years ago and because it was all ages you could only drink in the bar, which was a separate room from where the stage was. You literally could not watch the band and have a drink at the same time. It was annoying as hell.

simplephysics 03-08-2009 04:16 PM

I missed the Elephant 6 roll through because the show was sold out, same thing happened with Have Heart, and Cursive. /wrists.

Yeah, I could see the annoying factors of an all ages show with those kind of cases. Still, as an minor, I still hate the 18+ shows myself. When I get to be 18 I'm sure I'll start hating the all ages shows.

I heard that Slint's reunion shows were nothing special.

Heh. 18+ shows still present the same problems for me. I like 21+ shows. :D

The great thing is that you only have to deal with being underage for shows for a relatively short period of time, after that you have decades to go to 18+ or 21+ shows whenever you feel like it.

swim 03-08-2009 04:43 PM

Music elitism>social elitism

Surell 03-08-2009 04:43 PM

True that. I only got 3 years till I can go to 18+.

Anyway, Lil Wayne canceled here. That's old news though.

Swim: Political Elitism > Musical Elitism.
