Bands you hate that everyone else loves

Does Anyone have some bands they hate that everyone else seems to love?
for me its
U2
Red hot chilli peppers
the doors
led Zeppelin
van halen

dhayespw 03-20-2009 01:26 PM

Where's my change?

I agree with the U2 choice, they haven't been good since Joshua Tree.

My main two problems bands that everyone else drools over would be Nickleback and Daughtry. I think they suck, maybe there is some talent there, but every song they release feels more overproduced than the last one.

I don't think there's any doubt that both of these bands suck; Nickelback have an outstanding reputation of being horrible. Conversely, I actually think that they've become the metaphorical punching bag for people to beat up on every time they talk about horrible music that's out there dominating radio frequencies.

Personally, I think they just came at the wrong time -- when post-grunge had already exhausted itself as anything remotely interesting. They're no worse than the slew of shite PG bands that came before: Local H, Marcy Playground, Silverchair, etc.

PinkCigarette 03-20-2009 02:06 PM

RHCP
Nickelback
Jonas Brothers
Rihanna
Pussycat Dolls
Lil' Wayne
Miley Cyrus
U2
.....so many more.

For U2, I liked them up until a few years ago. I just can't stand their music now, I really can't. I also don't see the big deal with The Unforgettable Fire (song). I've seen it on a few lists of top songs and I don't understand why this song is so great. It's probably one of my most hated U2 songs.

dhayespw 03-20-2009 02:18 PM

What did it for me was their signing and release of the band Default, in my opinion one of the least talented bands of my generation. They do take a lot of flack, for good reason, but atleast they do play their own intruments.

As such, i think Rihanna, Pussycat Dolls, Lil' Wayne, Miley Cyrus, and ms. spears don't deserve to be on the same list as the actual bands. I would take nickleback over any of those "artists" in any argument.

anticipation 03-20-2009 02:23 PM

this would be so much more interesting if people didn't be so ****ing cliche by hating on absolute **** and assert their opinions about the slew of established bands who are obviously overrated, instead of stretching the definition of "band" to include miley cyrus and the jonas brothers.

everyone on the planet with a working brain knows that those bands suck, let's hear what you have to say about pink floyd or neutral milk hotel.

I haven't heard anything good from / about nickelback, which is perhaps because the less musically interested mass audience have been trying to tune to a rather 'catchy' rock band -- which in our eyes is bland by ever means.

Carpathian Forest - I think they are an overrated typical black metal band that came around at the wrong time, with crappy lyrics.

jackhammer 03-20-2009 02:59 PM

Although we do have a similar thread let's see how it goes.

Nick Drake bores me senseless and I cannot stand the first Stone Roses album. Now that's not cliched choices.

dhayespw 03-20-2009 03:04 PM

i guess maybe I misunderstood the topic. i thought we were going after bands that everyone seems to like. anytime i get a chance to rag nickelback, I will.

Pink floyd - I like
Ston Roses - No Likey
silverchair - like (with the exception of neon ballroom)
Marcy's Playground - Didn't listen to them after I heard sex n candy

I'll also throw Green Day under the bus

I know what a BAND is, I am just including other garbage musical "talents" that are extremely popular for no good reason.

Obviously not "everyone on the planet" knows that these people suck because they have a crapload of fans for different reasons.

Breaking Into Heaven might be one of my all-time favorite Roses' tracks, and I think John Squire got immeasurably better at guitar between the two albums. It's still a hard pick for me.

Personally I don't find Joy Division the least bit interesting & I think that Cream is downright awful. Shit, throw the Yardbirds in there as well and everything Clapton's done sans Derek and the Dominoes.

I agree about Cream. John Mayalls Bluesbreakers were a thousand times better. As for Stone Roses I am probably one of the only few to have that view (and almost certainly out of the British contingent).

While we are at it Neutral Milk Hotel are awful and with the exception of a couple of songs Rolling Stones suck too...oh and The Who!

Bulldog 03-20-2009 03:16 PM

I've never really seen much in Cream either.

I wouldn't say I flat-out hate them, but I've never really been a fan of Queen or Led Zep. I do like a few songs from both of them, but can't exactly see myself getting their albums anytime soon.

Oh, and I hate Wilco and Neutral Milk Hotel too.

Terrible Lizard 03-20-2009 03:24 PM

Blur sucks too.

I cut my teeth on the compilation of their early stuff which was just much more energetic and frayed, maybe you'd dig that? Still I can't imagine having gotten into them roasting in the perpetual sunlight of Texas (you can tell I've never been right?)

Until recently I'd have agreed with you on Cream and pretty much all wanky blues-rock, but I think Blue Cheer were the entry point into some of that sh*t. Power trio, stoned out, no nonsense. Not sure how that leads into Eric Clapton's gurning

There aren't really any bands I categorically hate that 'people' seem to enjoy (by people I'll take that to mean musicbanter and the smattering of 'real-life' folks who's opinion on music is informed enough to be worth a damn)... chances are if they are that adored by so many you can admire them for something, whether it be a knack for writing accessible songs or cornering the market on teenage angst.

I don't enjoy the vast majority of Pink Floyd's discography, I can't get into Porcupine Tree, I've put up a long fight against Tom Waits and most Nick Cave, and I grew up on the 'Head but they mainly just annoy me now. These could all be subject to change if I'm optimistic...

I have a question that has been bugging me I have to front,
what is with everyone's galloping obsession with Taylor Swift? I've only heard two of her singles, I believe, and I dismissed her music for the defecation I thought it was.

When I checked RYM, I noticed she was rated generously high- am I missing something or should I be giving this pop artist another chance?..

Nah, I've tried all Joy Division's albums, always seems like Ian Curtis is trying to suck the life out of the rest of the music. Kind of ironic, because I love JAMC and most other bands that spawned in their wake.

I forgot about Nick Cave. I don't have much patience for him, I admit I enjoyed the last Grinderman but apart from that there might be one or two songs of his that intrigue me. Not to mention Talking Heads. Like you I grew up on 'em, my father was a huge David Byrne fan for some reason or another but I just can't get past his characteristic whine.

By the 'Head I meant Radiohead, sorry :D... Talking Heads I like up 'til Byrne starts steering things in the direction of his solo career, which I really can't get into. As you say it's the voice. Haha you'd love his last solo album, he does an aria with Rufus Wainwright :hphones:

They have a couple songs I like but, yeah, overall I think they're an overrated and somewhat boring band.

Is lucifer_sam originally from Texas or something? I thought he was from Pittsburgh.

I've never been to Texas and I have no intention of finding out what it's like.

LoathsomePete 03-20-2009 04:29 PM

I do not like The Beatles, I wouldn't go so far and say that I hate them, but I do not have any of their songs on my computer and I am going to keep it that way. While I understand and appreciate what they did for pop music, their music just never appealed to me and I tried really hard to get into them but just could not force myself to like them.

And to Lucifer_sam Texas is actually a pretty alright state I gotta say. Did a road trip from Nevada to Texas then back and besides Witchita in Kansas, Texas was my second favourite place. Everyone I met there was really nice and it's somewhere I wouldn't mind going back to.

oh right my bad, not sure why I thought that :usehead:. Though on this board there was an 80% chance i'd have been right :p:

I'd go there if someone paid for the flight though, plenty of reasons to go, could drop in on sweet_nothing and listen to some BLUR

Kings of Leon, Lil Wayne, Sonic Youth.

I say those because they've at least got some musical credibility (it seems), as opposed to all the pop whores everyone hates.

Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Jonas Brothers.
