Song Vs Song.

Same song Title. Two different artists. which do you prefer and why? I will put a poll up and after a week proffer another pair of tracks. Suggestions are welcome but please don't post actual vids or I will just remove them :D I will include no cover versions either.

First pair for your deliberation. Machine Gun.

Unfortunately I like both and like them for different reasons but more thoughts later.

Gotta give it to Hendrix. That's one of the better Portishead tracks I've heard but I'm not a big fan.

khfreek 05-12-2009 02:32 PM

Absolutely no contest, I don't like that Portishead track.

TheBig3 05-12-2009 02:43 PM

jackhammer, omg, i read this 8 times and I don't know what you're asking me. Do i critique the two performances, or do I draw up what I'd imagine to be the love child of these two acts version of the song its just not clear...

Portis Head.

jackhammer 05-12-2009 02:46 PM

What's the better song? Simple as that. Same song titles but different artists and genres.

Comus 05-12-2009 02:50 PM

Portishead are utter ****e, so obviously hendrix.

Urban Hat€monger ? 05-12-2009 02:54 PM

Hendrix

I don't mind Postishead but that song just gets on my nerves.

Bulldog 05-12-2009 03:11 PM

I like a bit of Portishead every now and then, but the Hendrix tune is the better one by miles.

SATCHMO 05-12-2009 03:18 PM

I do like some Portishead, but that song is not working out for me so much. It definitely can't compete with what has to be one of my favorite Hendrix songs.

crash_override 05-12-2009 03:25 PM

Hendrix... this is going to be one of those polls.

dac 05-12-2009 03:26 PM

I went with Portishead, it's an absolutely stellar track. I like me some Hendrix too, but I'm gonna keep it interesting.

jackhammer 05-12-2009 03:28 PM

I may just do this every couple of days instead of once a week. Yeah I think Hendrix will win but it's all a bit of fun and who knows you may hear some new toons along the way!

Brad Stengel 05-12-2009 04:00 PM

Portishead. I'm not wacky about that specific Hendrix song, and the riff from Portishead's Machine Gun is incredible.

I like this weekly thread idea alot, maybe next week you could do Holiday by The Beach Boys, Green Day, Weezer, and Atlas Sound, a song vs. song vs. song vs. song.

jackhammer 05-12-2009 04:04 PM

I have found a few tracks that have 2, 3 and even 4 artists so I may well do that.

Sneer 05-12-2009 04:26 PM

I do love a bit of Hendrix, but Portishead hands down. Such a good song.

jackhammer 05-12-2009 04:30 PM

After deliberation I have gone for Portishead. As much as I like the Hendrix track, The PH track is simple but extremely effective and kudos to them for having the balls for making something anti commercial when they could have easily created another 'Coffee table top' album and raked in the cash.

Janszoon 05-12-2009 04:32 PM

That's really not one of Hendrix's better songs IMO and I like the Portishead song a lot so definitely Portishead for me.

So Jackhammer, are you going to do Metallica's "One" versus U2's "One" at some point. :D

Sneer 05-12-2009 04:34 PM

Its simplicity is brutal. Cold, stark and aggressive; i think its a beautifully artistic piece personally.

I agree. And it's a little outside the box for Portishead which I also appreciate about it.

If only the drum and bass sound was better on AJFA :( In rock and especially metal, a bad snare sound really ruins an album for me.

SATCHMO 05-12-2009 05:09 PM

I really don't understand the allure of this Portishead song. It sounds like it was made by deaf people.

That's why I voted for my man Jimi. Plus it's a great Hendrix song.

Vote Hendrix ya'll.

The allure is that it's a really good song. :p:

Sneer 05-12-2009 05:50 PM

Precisely :finger:

Comus 05-12-2009 05:53 PM

I don't understand how so many people can like such terrible music.

Why is that hard to understand for someone who likes Windir? :D

dac 05-12-2009 06:40 PM

8 to 8... I'm so proud of Music Banter right now :D

I'm kinda scared that a lot of the newer members will just vote for Hendrix because of his name and not give the Portishead song an honest listen though

Comus 05-12-2009 06:51 PM

Yeah, because Portishead are so less well known than Hendrix in the scope of the past year or so?

You're right, they are a lot less known than Hendrix.

Seriously dude, trip hop has a small enough following as it is, and you compare them to the dude that every high schooler thinks is the only guitarist worth talking about.

You cant be serious

Comus 05-12-2009 07:06 PM

They're higher rated on last.fm and imho that says a hell of a lot.

All that says is that the sort of people that use last.fm are the sort of people that would like Portishead more. It's hardly a good representation of the average high schooler's taste.

jackhammer 05-12-2009 07:10 PM

Seriously Comus why is Portisheads music so ****e and terrible*? They are basically a prog band with samplers instead of guitars. They don't play boring, banal, safe commercial music. Their music is exploratory, inquisitive and forward thinking. Everything that I know you look for in music.

Even if their sound is not conducive to you, to call them terrible and ****e* is a narrow minded statement and I granted you with a lot more intelligence than that.

* your words.

It was listening to the Portishead song that caused me to vote for Hendrix. Seriously that Portishead song sounds like a drunk man liked in a band room closet w/ the lights turned off.

First of all Prog=/=Good. Second, they are utterly awful, I can't listen to more than 5 minutes of any of their albums without feeling physically ill. It's personal preference, but in my opinon they are ****e. People can enjoy them, fine, I just won't understand it.

EDIT: I love how you immediately associate someone who dislikes a band you like with low intelligence.

Sneer 05-12-2009 07:16 PM

Dude you're dp is of the Residents, a band that have made a career out of producing material that sounds like a drunk man locked in a room full of instruments with the lights turned off.
