Just gonna throw this in there since punk and conformism were brought up. Anybody who says "punk needs to sound this way. You can't change punk" needs to be slapped. Punk is about npo rules. And althouh I agree punk may have a common sound, punk as a whole is about steering away from mainstream music to try new things.
