Whats Your Favourite Lyrics Of A Song

Alrite, this is a thread where you can post your favourite lyrics from a particular song.
Lyrics in particular that move you, are special or just simple but do it for you.

Please NO posting personal lyrics as I dont think this is allowed by the mods & dont want my thread to get hi-jacked! Alright.

Heres some lyrics that I love:

Dire Straits- Calling Elvis

Calling Elvis
Is anybody home?
Calling Elvis
I’m here all alone
Did he leave the building
Or can he come to the phone
Calling Elvis
I'm here all alone
Well tell him I was calling
Just to wish him well
Let me leave my number
Heartbreak Hotel
Oh love me tender
Baby don’t be cruel
Return to sender
Treat me like a fool

This is possibly the best (or one of) set of lyrics Mark Knopfler has ever written; very clever merging references to Elvis & filling them in with his own.

I suppose you could argue it could have been pretty easy for him with all the existing Elvis lyrics to work around but still it works for me.

Heres another from possibly my favourite song of all time (or definitely one of my most listened to songs).
I couldnt find a video for it on youtube so ive picked an accoustic cover that I think is really good & I dont usually dig the fanboy covers you get on youtube.

Neil Young- I'm The Ocean

I'm an accident
I was driving way too fast
Couldn't stop though
So I let the moment last
I'm for rollin'
I'm for tossin' in my sleep
It's not guilt though
It's not the company I keep

People my age
They don't do the things I do
They go somehwere
While I run away with you
I got my friends
And I got my children too
I got her love
She's got my love too

I can't hear you
But I feel the things you say
I can't see you
But I see what's in my way
Now I'm floatin'
Cause I'm not tied
to the ground
Words I've spoken
Seem to leave a hollow sound

On the long plain
See the rider in the night
See the chieftain
See the braves
in cool moonlight
Who will love them
When they take another life
Who will hold them
When they tremble
for the knife

Voicemail numbers
On an old computer screen
Rows of lovers
Parked forever in a dream
Screaming sirens
Echoing across the bay
To the old boats
From the city far away

Homeless heroes
Walk the streets
of their hometown
Rows of zeros
On a field
that's turning brown
They play baseball
They play football
under lights
They play card games
And we watch them every night

Need distraction
Need romance and candlelight
Need random violence
Need entertainment tonight
Need the evidence
Want the testimony of
Expert witnesses
On the brutal crimes of love

I was too tired
To see the news
when I got home
Pulled the curtain
Fell into bed alone
Started dreaming
Saw the rider once again
In the doorway
Where she stood
and watched for him
Watched for him

I'm not present
I'm a drug
that makes you dream
I'm an aerostar
I'm a cutlass supreme
In the wrong lane
Trying to turn
against the flow
I'm the ocean
I'm the giant undertow

Heres another couple of songs from another one of my favourite artists of all time

Paul Weller- Time Passes

I saw you today, or at least I think it was
It's hard to say, we've all changed so much -
Compelled to look, but I hid my face
It's hard to trace - these feelings
Gone so soon, the time I spent with you
And like an old, old tune-keeps running through my head-
I wanted to say, so many things
But my mouth went dry - and one word & I'd cry.

Slender bride, your beauty shines from you
And forever more, I'll be on your side for sure -
A light in your life, that always burns for you
As time passes.... so quickly.

The final stage, we've both reached some way
As we board our trains to different stations
And the parts we play, and the things we say,
Words on the way - to discovery

This is another great song from Mr Weller- although i think lyrically the songs on Wild Wood are better (Ill post them later sometime)
I still think these are the two best songs of Stanley Road not to mention the title track itself.

Paul Weller- Porcelain Gods

Beware false prophets - take a stand!
My fortune cookie cracked up in my hand,
More advice to fill up your head
More empty words from the living dead-
Who seek to explain what can’t really be said-
And how disappointed I was
To turn out after all -
Just a porcelain God -
That shatters when it falls-
Too much will kill you - too little ain’t enough
You shout my name but I’ll call your bluff
Most who see me - see me not for real
We fake & fawn - play games ’til dawn
But I could see what you can see
And I hate too what you hate in me -
And how disappointed I am
To find me part of no plan -
Just a porcelain God -
That shatters when it falls

Don’t lose control - I tell myself,
Life can take many things away -
Some people will try - and take it all
They’ll pick off pieces as they watch you crawl
And how disappointed I was
To turn out after all -
Just a porcelain God -
That shatters when it falls-
That shatters when it falls.

I like the lyrics in Heaven Shall Burn's - Black Tears.

The part I liek goes like this.

"I never felt what you call guilt. I still believe do what thou wilt."

jackhammer 05-20-2009 07:19 AM

You suffer..but why? Napalm Death-You Suffer.
If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. Hawkwind-Utopia.

Both short yet perfect I think and they can apply to a wide range of subjects and emotions.

SortaGuy 05-20-2009 05:25 PM

Snoop Dogg's Lodi Dodi, because its chill

Biggie Smalls and 2pac wrote some great lyrics too, especially on 2pac's Changes and Biggie's Everyday Struggle

I get what your saying but the lyrics seem very vague to me.
I would need to hear the full songs of each before I could pass any proper judgement though.

I don't play favorites, but here's one I dig:

Tomahawk - Cul de Sac
The world is growin' old
And preparin' for sleep
But you and me are just not gettin' outta bed
Wakin' up

Sunbathing on the shores of a nightmare
I wish you were here

'Cause they say
We say
And we say

Eternity is all used up
And our hell has frozen over
But it ain't that cold
It's warm enough

Sunbathing on the shores of a nightmare
I wish you were here

'Cause they say
We say
And we say

That we're saved
We're saved
That we're saved

Perfect lyrics for a perfect song. If I'm still on this forum in 5 years, I guarantee I'll still be showing this song off at every oppurtunity.

Showbiz
Controlling my feelings for too long
Controlling my feelings for too long
Controlling my feelings for too long
Controlling my feelings for too long
Forcing our darkest souls to unfold
And forcing our darkest souls to unfold
Pushing us into self destruction
Pushing us into self destruction

And they make me
Make me dream your dreams
And they make me
Make me scream your screams

Trying to please you for too long
Trying to please you for too long
Visions of greed you wallow
Rhythms of greed you wallow
Visions of greed you wallow
Rhythms of greed you wallow

And they make me
Make me dream your dreams
And they make me
Make me scream your screams

Controlling my feelings for too long
Controlling my feelings for too long
And forcing my darkest souls to unfold
And forcing my darkest souls to unfold
And pushing us into self destruction
And pushing us into self destruction

Make me scream your screams

those are perhaps some of the most awful lyrics i've seen.

i'm not big on understanding what songs actually mean, but it's pretty irritating when lyricists resort to recycled cliches and platitudinous phrases. especially in cases like this, where there's no clear direction of focus to the material.

khfreek 05-20-2009 06:47 PM

No direction or focus? The lyrics are clearly about being controlled and used, with the implied theme that it's got to stop.

Saying they're the most awful lyrics you've ever seen is just untrue.

EDIT: Basically, I know that they're simple. They aren't abstract in the least. THAT'S WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THEM!

Kraftwerk - The Hall of Mirrors

The young man stepped into the hall of mirrors
Where he discovered a reflection of himself
Even the greatest stars discover themselves in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars discover themselves in the looking glass

Sometimes he saw his real face
And sometimes a stranger at his place
Even the greatest stars find their face in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars find their face in the looking glass

He fell in love with the image of himself
and suddenly the picture was distorted
Even the greatest stars dislike themselves in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars dislike themselves in the looking glass

He made up the person he wanted to be
And changed into a new personality
Even the greatest stars change themselves in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars change themselves in the looking glass

The artist is living in the mirror
With the echoes of himself
Even the greatest stars live their lives in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars live their lives in the looking glass

Even the greatest stars fix their face in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars fix their face in the looking glass

Even the greatest stars live their lives in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars live their lives in the looking glass

On a similar note, I always loved the lyrics to PiL's "The Order of Death". Just two lines repeating over and over but I really like them. You can really take it as a kind of commentary on life:

This is what you want
This is what you get

Fruitonica 05-20-2009 10:32 PM

Quote:

You walked around, thought yourself beautiful
Just too bad they stared, Just too bad they stared
Broke up your crown, called you unusuable
See how well you fared

Stole underground, To kick your heart around
Banished from above, banished from above
Forgot yourself, Your home and shot your health
Left it all for love

And on their lips
Delirious quips
Last seen with friends wishing them well

Delayed, seduced you listened for the truth
Just too bad they lied, just too bad they lied
O come around in form of future youth
Summoned from the sky
Hours - TV on the Radio

That's only half the song, but I don't think the second half is quite as absorbing. TV on the Radio are in general, brilliant lyricists.

Alrite man Ive heard of that band but not heard any stuff yet.
By the way, is your avatar something to do with that Mars Volta album where there driving cars with red bags over their heads.
I work with a guy who had that particular album once &
I took the piss out of him although he says I would actually like them if I listened to them...

Fruitonica 05-21-2009 06:02 AM

Yeah, Frances the Mute. If you're looking to get into them I'd say either Deloused or Bedlam would be the best place to start.

The Morning Light - Brand,New,Friends

"She's got these brand new friends
I got a few new songs
Mostly new headaches
And reasons not to call"

A Skylit Drive - Eva The Carrier

The scream this in a deep devilish scream during a somewhat of a breakdown.

"Hey baby, I want you
I want you.
Hey baby, I want you
I want you alive."

Mirrorball95 05-21-2009 10:39 AM

These are only some of the lyrics from mr Neil Young which I think are excellent.
Theres a few different lines in the song which I really like so Ive just posted all the lyrics & highlighted the ones which I think stand out:
Sorry about the ****ty fanboy video: couldnt find one with the original recording, still a great song though. Skip to 0.45.

Long ago in the book of old,
Before the chapter where dreams unfold
A battle raged on the open page,
Love was a winner there overcoming hate
Like a little girl who couldn't wait.

Love and only love will endure
Hate is everything you think it is
Love and only love will break it down
Love and only love, will break it down
Break it down, break it down.

Tomorrow is a long long time if you're a memory
Trying to find peace of mind

Spirit come back to me,
Give me strength and set me free
Let me hear the magic in my heart.

Love and only love will endure
Hate is everything you think it is

Love and only love will break it down
Love and only love, will break it down
Break it down, break it down.

Long ago in the book of old,
Before the chapter where dreams unfold
A battle raged on the open page,
Love was a winner there overcoming hate
Like a little girl who couldn't wait.

Love and only love will endure
Hate is everything you think it is
Love and only love will break it down
Love and only love.

Why? always has grade a lyrics, Good Friday for example..

if you grew up with white boys
who only look at black and puerto rican porno
cause they want something that their dad don't got
then you know where you're at

mortaring your earholes shut in a rush with wet coke
in a starbucks bathroom with the door closed
on booze, i'm left in residue and confused
like the first time you used soft water
down on my luck, caught unaware
like houdini when the last fist struck

if i'm sinking and laughing at something sunken in, i am

sucking **** for drink tickets
at the free bar at my cousin's bat mitzvah
cutting the punch line and it ain't no joke
devoid of all hope circus mirrors and pot smoke
picking fights on **** night
with shirlies and lokes and snatching purses

doing out on karaoke and forgetting all the verses
blowing kisses to disinterested bitches
playing lead lay in a bad way on broadway
sending sexy smses to my exes new man cause i can
on the road trying to break an old van
eating pussy for new fangs, i am what the hell
using purell till my hands bleed and swell
missing mail at a motel 6, i'm unwell

if i'm sinking and laughing at something sunken in, i am

it feels exciting touching your handwriting
getting horny by reading it and repeating poor me
intently staring at the picture of your feet on the sticker
at the r. crohn's exhibit, i wonder who's sicker

jerking off in an art museum john till my **** hurts
the kind of **** i won't admit to my head shrinker
not even in a whisper to my own little sister
i just act like a **** and talk **** when i'm with her

aught six i'll say the friday before easter
was not what i cried to myself in the pisser
and with you in the front row at the silver jews show
and you act like you didn't notice, my fear of the bear
at showbiz pizza when i saw six was overwhelming and not dissimilar to this

if i'm sinking and something sunken in, i am

at jacob han's on tour i wake up
hung over on a hardwood floor
from a dream about how your dress
hangs off of your little breasts
i'd rather be dead than call this song
how i lost your respect but god bless or get neglected
and i'll see you when the sun sets east, don't forget me

just another sunday paddleboat ride
on a man made lake with another lady stanger
if i remain lost and die on a cross
at least i wasn't born in a manger
i can sense somewhere right now being prayed for
seems like i always arrive on the same shore
from where my sails set maybe with one less lady

I actually love Falloutboy lyrics. They just seem honest.

Strike us like matches, cause everyone deserves the flames

Everyone deserves the flames but it's such a shame

It breathes.
What stands before us is not a machine,
it breathes, it will bleed, and it will sleep.
Its body is covered in hundreds of wires.
The mouth attempts to speak but,
Only murmers collapse from its jaws.
With only delayed movements from its figure we all begin to strain.
My legs weaken at the site of this damanged program,
For this program kept you breathing, it kept you alive.
These circuits diffused once more.
We kneel and we plead for no mourning ahead of us,
Entombment of a machine.
So Sleep, sleep among us and hesitate no more.
I saw it die.

Words are flying out like
endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass
They slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow waves of joy
are drifting thorough my open mind
Possessing and caressing me
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Images of broken light which
dance before me like a million eyes
That call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a
restless wind inside a letter box
they tumble blindly as
they make their way across the universe
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sounds of laughter shades of life
are ringing through my open ears
exciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which
shines around me like a million suns
It calls me on and on across the universe

Quote:

Darkness at the break of noon
Shadows even the silver spoon
The handmade blade, the child's balloon
Eclipses both the sun and moon
To understand you know too soon
There is no sense in trying.

Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn
Suicide remarks are torn
From the fool's gold mouthpiece
The hollow horn plays wasted words
Proves to warn
That he not busy being born
Is busy dying.

Temptation's page flies out the door
You follow, find yourself at war
Watch waterfalls of pity roar
You feel to moan but unlike before
You discover
That you'd just be
One more person crying.

So don't fear if you hear
A foreign sound to your ear
It's alright, ma, i'm only sighing.

As some warn victory, some downfall
Private reasons great or small
Can be seen in the eyes of those that call
To make all that should be killed to crawl
While others say don't hate nothing at all
Except hatred.

Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Made everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored christs that glow in the dark
It's easy to see without looking too far
That not much
Is really sacred.

While preachers preach of evil fates
Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates
Goodness hides behind it's gates
But even the president of the united states
Sometimes must have
To stand naked.

An' though the rules of the road have been lodged
It's only people's games that you got to dodge
And it's alright, ma, i can make it.

Advertising signs that con you
Into thinking you're the one
That can do what's never been done
That can win what's never been won
Meantime life outside goes on
All around you.

You lose yourself, you reappear
You suddenly find you got nothing to fear
Alone you stand with nobody near
When a trembling distant voice, unclear
Startles your sleeping ears to hear
That somebody thinks
They really found you.

A question in your nerves is lit
Yet you know there is no answer fit to satisfy
Insure you not to quit
To keep it in your mind and not fergit
That it is not he or she or them or it
That you belong to.

Although the masters make the rules
For the wise men and the fools
I got nothing, ma, to live up to.

For them that must obey authority
That they do not respect in any degree
Who despise their jobs, their destinies
Speak jealously of them that are free
Do what they do just to be
Nothing more than something
They invest in.

While some on principles baptized
To strict party platform ties
Social clubs in drag disguise
Outsiders they can freely criticize
Tell nothing except who to idolize
And then say god bless him.

While one who sings with his tongue on fire
Gargles in the rat race choir
Bent out of shape from society's pliers
Cares not to come up any higher
But rather get you down in the hole
That he's in.

But i mean no harm nor put fault
On anyone that lives in a vault
But it's alright, ma, if i can't please him.

Old lady judges watch people in pairs
Limited in sex, they dare
To push fake morals, insult and stare
While money doesn't talk, it swears
Obscenity, who really cares propaganda, all is phony.

While them that defend what they cannot see
With a killer's pride, security
It blows the minds most bitterly
For them that think death's honesty
Won't fall upon them naturally
Life sometimes
Must get lonely.

My eyes collide head-on with stuffed graveyards
False gods, i scuff
At pettiness which plays so rough
Walk upside-down inside handcuffs
Kick my legs to crash it off
Say okay, i have had enough
What else can you show me?

And if my thought-dreams could be seen
They'd probably put my head in a guillotine
But it's alright, ma, it's life, and life only.

I agree, I've seen better lyrics posted in the songwriting forum.

While I agree the choice of words is kind of cliche, I really don't see how anyone can not get what they're talking about. I knew the first time I heard it, and I'm no literary genius.

I know exactly what he's talking about. That's the problem for me. I like weird lyrics and trying to figure things out.

Yeah, I'm not one for the abstract :)
