For some reason I'm not that comfortable wearing headphones when shopping (for groceries or anything else). I hate people in stores that don't follow logical flows, like a street. For instance, if I'm going to go around someone, I look over my shoulder to make sure I'm not cutting someone off. :D And if I'm coming out of an isle, I yield to those passing by as they have the right of way. Kind of like being on a bike, I guess, I need to be able to hear what's around me to avoid run-ins. Around the holidays I've done the headphone thing, though, as salespeople can be more pushy and it's easier to ignore them with headphones.

I really need to seriously consider this. I do listen to ambient or instrumental stuff on occasion, but I find that often the music distracts me from doing work. Not only because it's busy/loud/has vocals or whatever, but because I'm always wanting to talk about music online and research and stuff. If I make my work listening more of a passive thing I might get more work done. :p: There's just always so much I want to listen to, it would be tough to play mostly instrumental stuff at work, then when would I listen to all the other music? I fail at prioritizing between work and music.

This is exactly why I listen to this type of music at work. Not only is it less distracting, but it really does have a calming effect which is a great thing on a stressful day. Also, I can play it a little louder than my other music without bothering my co-workers.

I also know what you mean about prioritizing between work and music...I swear if I get fired from my job for anything it will be for being on this damn website all the time. lol.

I never have the music so loud as to not be aware of my surroundings as would class myself as a courteous shopper but I also dont want to hear inane ramblings of people either calming their kids down or couples arguing. I always do the shopping on my own and it's a chore that doesn't bother me. I also love doing the ironing for 3 hours straight and everyone leaves the room and I listen to my sounds and zone out!

I do the shopping on my own for the most part, too. I guess my argument comes from the fact that my "walking around" headphones are IEMs, so they block out most sound. I use the iPod earbuds because they are terrible and I miss too many sounds. But perhaps for shopping they would come in handy.

Also, I don't really hear much yapping when I'm shopping. I guess people keep to themselves around here. Maybe I'm just used to ignoring them.

At least 8 hours a day for me, as my job permits me to play cds for the entire duration of my shift, then I come home and listen to music for about 3-4 hours so quite a lot really. I find if Im off work one day i might only listen to 1 or 2 albums though.

Jeroenmeloen 06-06-2009 08:36 AM

Whole day long for me ;-)... I live and breath on music

Rickenbacker 06-06-2009 08:40 AM

I have music running through three receivers, plus through my computer for 10 hours a day, so If I'm in the house, on the patio or on the porch, I'm always listening to music.

Astronomer 06-06-2009 06:17 PM

I'm basically listening to music all day.
