How is Alternative a "bogus" classification? Whoops, guess you missed the whole '90's' thing.

It's as bogus a label as indie is, and I was around in the 90s. It used to mean something (rock that wasn't mainstream, college rock basically) and then it became a mainstream genre and is still used to identify a lot of mainstream/top-40 radio stations. So it's completely meaningless now. Yeah we know what they mean, but it's no longer "alternative", it's mainstream. The "indie" label has suffered the exact same fate.

I don't like "everything" but I like some of every genre you posted, and then some.

I got driven away from the ultimate-guitar forum by people like that, I mean it's great for you to have the knowledge and respect for who came before and inspired artists you like, but their close-mindedness that nothing good has come out since 1976 is a little disturbing.

But does that make the term meaningless? It may be nonsensical sounding but that doesn't mean the term has become moot. It has just grown to describe the post-grunge sound of today's mainstream rock.

sidewinder 06-13-2009 12:48 PM

True, I wasn't really implying that it was meaningless. People know what it means when they hear it. Just that it's bogus in the sense that the meaning doesn't make sense anymore.

Maybe I don't pay enough attention, but I've yet to come across a poster and think "They have an awful taste in music" Either I enjoy a lot of the same bands they do or I simply don't like a band they love, not that said band is terrible. I honestly think think the members here have a good taste in music. Or at least all the members I've come across.

IWP 06-13-2009 01:44 PM

Man, post-grunge needs to die already.

Anteater 06-13-2009 01:56 PM

Going to agree with sidewinder here; if post-grunge rock is played on a lot of mainstream radio stations, then what is it an "alternative" to?
