If my parents don't like the same music I do then that's their problem.

I was in the car with my mom the other day, and I put Tago Mago in CD player.
She won't let me play music in the car anymore. :D

My pops was huge into the old stand-bys like Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Jimi Hendrix and CCR when we were kids, and he always was and still is a big John Prine fan, but he also started getting really into White Zombie when they first came out. I remember he bought Astro-Creep 2000 when it was brand new.

My moms was really into show tunes and musical songs. About the only artists I can remember her really being into when we were kids were John Denver and Jim Croche. But she was really into Collective Soul's debut CD when it first came out, too.

I guess it helped that my parents were still pretty young (late 20s, early 30s) when we were little, so they weren't oppressive at all when it came to us listening to extreme music. Although when I started listening to Metallica, Pantera and Slayer, my dad made it a point to make fun of it sometimes. And I have to admit that he was right about one band, and that was Avenged Sevenfold. He described it as Backstreet Boys for Metal. It took me a year or two to agree.

Couldn't have said that any better. My situation exactly, with a few exceptions. My mom likes pretty much everything 70-80's which means a lot of crap, but here favorites are Billy Joel and Queen so...points there. Pretty much how I got into them.

I don't think I'd be nearly as into music as I am without my dad's influence... When I was a kid he introduced me to the Beatles, Led Zep, Sting, Peter Gabriel, ZZ Top, Boston... He's the kind of guy what can listen to a classic rock station and name every song within 5 seconds. He did sound for a production company in Vancouver through college and is generally a pretty cool guy. Very supportive of my band as well. It goes two ways though, I've found... He now listens to Lamb of God, Cancer Bats, Death, Kyuss, etc. and I've managed to convince him to pick up his Gibson SG again after a few decades of not playing. He's also recorded a bunch of my bands' songs, which is pretty cool. I'm pretty lucky to have a good relationship with my parents I think.

in all honesty it would be pretty ok if my parents liked my music, most of the time i gotta turn it down/put on headphones when they're in the room

When I was younger, I had this attitude for some reason. Around sixth or seventh grade when I really started listening to music, my parents got me listening to the Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, and Janis Joplin. My mom's also a huge Patti Smith fan and, believe it or not, introduced me to the Minutemen. They have a record collection with all of the above mentioned bands plus some Clash, Bachman Turner Overdrive, CCR, Grand Funk Railroad, and Missing Persons (at least those are the records that survived to today). There is some crap, of course, but how could I possibly say I don't like my parents music? The Jimi Hendrix Experience is my favorite band, and the Minutemen are at least in the top 10. Of course, this works the other way too. My mom likes music a lot (dad not so much, he just says everything I listen to is weird) and is always open to listening to new music. I've got her listening to some less experimental Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Eels, the Shins, and Slint. Beat that for your parents musical taste.
