Vincent by Don McLean

A beautifully written song by Don McLean after he'd read a book about the troubled artist Vincent Van Gogh.
OK we all know that, but when you consider how quickly this song was completed after putting pen to paper, its nothing short of a masterpiece.
Everything about this song has me feeling strangely, happily melancholic.
There's nothing impressionistic about 'Vincent'. Every single word is crystal clear and at a tempo that demands the listener to listen, to understand.
Sad and uplifting all at the same time.
Unfashionable? Yes, but without doubt one of my all time favourite songs.

A have a big thing for Genius of Love by The Tom Tom Club which is a song that has suffered from guilt by association due to the enormous amount of terrible RnB and hip hop songs that have sampled it (mainly Mariah Carey).

Bulldog 06-17-2009 03:50 PM

I don't care what anyone says, this is a fantastic song. It was massive when I was at school and it's since become one of the musical skeletons in my closet.

right-track 06-17-2009 03:56 PM

SATCH...Tom Tom Club classic. Awesome rhythm section.

I love this song. Natalie in that video mesmerises me every time I see it.
It makes me want to marry her...amongst other things.

Culture Club - Karma Chameleon

Wham! - Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go
Hell yes!

Genesis - Misunderstanding

This one's not so much unfashionable to those who know and enjoy their earlier work...but in general Genesis is pretty unfashionable. But I love this song, and some of their other later stuff.

Aw, I love Genius Of Love.

Anyways, completely embarrassing but I cannot deny that I love this song.

F*ck yes! Great song that.

I'll post one more confession myself and spend tomorrow picking up the pieces of my credibility...

How, my good sir, is this unfasionable? This is one of the greatest songs of all time. It sends shivers down my spine, it's awesome.

Tell me about it. Collins always gets a bad rep, but even if he's responsable for some of the worst novelty songs of the 1980s (Illegal Alien, Sussudio), he also had some great pop songs under his belt.

I still think That's All is a great song.

Because it doesn't fit with the kind of music I usually go for.
Same with 'Torn'. It's inevitable that someones choices are going to be challenged because people have differing tastes.
I wouldn't have had you down for thinking this song was "awesome" for starters.
That's what this thread is about...digging up a few surprises and learning about one another's less obvious tastes.

Edit: and stop being so fucking abrasive.

mr dave 06-17-2009 05:08 PM

*edit* comus beat me to it.

the van gogh song is fantastic. love hearing it on the radio.

I'll abrase you >;(

EDIT: I made it less abrasive, happy? :D

Also I find the notion of "fashionable" music to be pretty laughable, in an age where everyoen can have their tastes opened up by the internet, what is "good" and what isn't will always be subjective. But playing along:

Basshunter: Boten Anna (the lyrics are the grabber, his english versions are awful)

Marit Larsen: Under the Surface

Yeah I like that one too, though not nearly as much. It does bring back memories.

Oh and to clarify...when I said I loved Misunderstanding "and some of their other later stuff", I was just referring to other unfashionable songs from this era...but I'm an unashamed fan of their earlier albums and don't consider that stuff unfashionable. ;)

I don't care if he is a complete twat, if I took that into consideration with music I would end up losing 50% of my music!

Such a great white boy soul/funk workout.

Perennial coffee table/after dinner party fave Sade. I think she has a brilliant voice and that bassline just does something to me. Bloody brilliant.

Well I was 10 when this came out so I can't help but be reminded of carefree summers and scraped knees from falling off my bike.

Guilty Pleasures you know are shit but like them anyway. This is more of a 'fuck that this rocks' thread.

My contribution:

Hole were badass, Live Through This particularly, ignore Courtney.

I don't care if Weezer has supposedly not been good since Pinkerton, this track is one of their best.

simplephysics 06-18-2009 03:41 PM

I don't care too much for Ryan Adams, but this song is awweeesome.

EDIT: err..

@dreadnaught

^great, "Guitar solo!"

also the slightly awkward dancing made me think of that Armi & Danni, Love You Tender Video.:cool:

Mr Sensitive 06-18-2009 04:36 PM

It's a good walking song.

FaSho 06-18-2009 04:40 PM

Speaking of walking....

Mr Sensitive 06-18-2009 04:43 PM

Lol, that's one of those evil songs which you detest, but when you're drunk it's almost hypnotic.

I do concur. No matter it's kitsch value it is a pile of bollocks.

Is it square to like this? Probably! I do really like this song so bollocks basically.
