Eight Frozen Modules – “Echo Youth”
This is choice! I dig the experimental electronic sound, I’m a big fan of IDM. I like the choppy deconstructed style of the music. The vocals are pretty interesting. Kinda dancehall-ish I guess. I’m not really into dancehall but enjoy the occasional track with this type of vocal. A whole album I may not enjoy as much. Another aspect I like is that the vocals are incomprehensible and they seem to be distorted as well. I like twisted music and this fits the bill. FYI, I’ve heard a lot of this guy’s music and most of it is instrumental. If you dig Aphex Twin, Autechre, and Venetian Snares, I would recommend digging further. 5/5

The Pop Group – “She is Beyond Good and Evil”
I’m not quite sure what I think of this song. I’ve played their album Y once a while back and found it interesting but challenging. I haven’t gone back for a second listen yet. I had not heard this song. I don’t know…it’s ok I guess. It doesn’t really move me one way or the other. 3/5

KMFDM – “WWWIII”
I was a big fan of KMFDM in the early/mid 90s. I enjoy both their more dancey/synth stuff from early in their career and the harder stuff that started with ANGST (one of my favorites from them). The last album I purchased was XTORT which was pretty good but I could tell they were losing me a bit. So I’d never heard this song. It’s not bad actually, but it doesn’t offer anything new that would compel me to listen to the album or the others since XTORT. It’s just not the kind of stuff I seek out these days. 3/5

The Brogues – “I Aint No Miracle Worker”
A decent 60s psychedelic pop song. I’ve been meaning to check out these highly rated Nuggets compilations but haven’t gotten around to it. I enjoy several bands that have songs on these comps. This one however, doesn’t do much for me after two listens. It’s decent, but don’t compel me to look further into the band. 3/5

Devin Townsend – “Coast”
These types of vocals are the reason I have a hard time getting into any modern/neo progressive rock. They’re too soft and ethereal, and bore me to tears. The music isn’t all that interesting either. I like that it gets a bit more aggressive at the end, but otherwise doesn’t interest me. 2/5

She & Him – “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?”
Decent song I guess, but not something that interests me in any way. 2/5

The Sisters of Mercy - “Lucretia My Reflection”
I’ve been aware of this band for many years but have never played any of their music. I was into industrial music in the early/mid 90s and often went to the industrial club which obviously played a lot of goth and other dark 80s dance music. I’m sure I’ve heard at least of few of their tracks, possibly even this one even though it doesn’t strike me as familiar. I enjoyed it, perhaps it’s time I check out one of their albums. 4/5

Frost* – “Snowman”
I’ve never heard of this band so I know nothing about them or what they are categorized as. They sound like modern or neo-prog to me. The vocals seem better than those in the Devin Townsend track, but still not my thing. The music is slightly more interesting, there were some warping effects here and there that I found interesting. But again this is not a vocal style I enjoy, though I admit it’s a pretty song. 3/5

Los Lobos – “Our Last Night”
I think these guys had a hit song in the early 90s (maybe even late 80s) but I can’t remember the name of it or how it sounds. This sounds very different from the style I remember, though. Vocals sound quite a bit like Steve Winwood to me, actually. That’s not a good or a bad thing. What it is is irrelevant, because I don’t enjoy this type of music at all. Too country/Americana for my taste, but it’s not terrible. Just not for me. 2/5

El Ten Eleven – “Thinking Loudly”
A beautiful post-rock song from this band’s debut album which I really enjoy. I’ve only heard this album and the 2nd, will check out the 3rd soon. It’s not particularly earth shattering but it’s nice for both background and concentrated listening. I think it’s kind of hard to get moved by this type of music unless you actually pay attention, which is why many are bored with post-rock. It serves its purpose, and I enjoy it but also have my limits. What am I blabbing about anyway? I don’t know. In all honesty, as the song wraps up, it’s pretty average post-rock. But sometimes average is just right. 4/5

Dead Can Dance – “Black Sun”
Another band I’ve been aware of for ages due to my involvement with industrial involvement in the early/mid 90s. I never bothered to check them out because I was more into upbeat stuff, even if dark. This is more dreamy/ethereal type stuff and never really appealed to me. The song is not bad though, reminds me a bit of The Sisters of Mercy (probably only because I just played one of their songs and they’re both goth-related), and some other band I can’t quite put my finger on right now. I think it’s Coil, actually. And that would make sense. I like the music as well, not bad. But I’m not sure I’ll look into their stuff quite yet, I still mostly seek out that is a bit more upbeat. Not exclusively, but this is a bit dark and probably not good for my mood. It was a bit more to my liking than I had expected, though. 4/5

Ali Ibrahim Touré – “Ai Du”
First time I’ve heard of this guy. Nice bluesy African track. I don’t listen to too much blues or world music, even though I respect it it’s just not my focus. This is a good track, although a bit long. If I was relaxing with a blunt or was sitting on my porch with a nice frosty beverage in the hot sun, I wouldn’t mind as much. It’s not really dragging, I guess I’m just feeling anxious. Maybe it’s due to the fact that I listen to too much spastic music. I can’t relax. I need help! My nerves are shot! 3.5/5

Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution – “Here’s to Life”
This is a nice track. Kind of ska I guess, but not as punky as most of the ska I’ve heard. I guess I’ve just mostly heard punk ska in that case. This reminds me a bit of a Sublime song or two, some vocal harmonies specifically. Date Rape! That’s the one. I was about to say “geez who didn’t those guys (Sublime) rip off?” but then I realized this Bandits album came out in 2001 so hmm. However, I’m quite burned out on Sublime and this pulls from a wide range of influences. I like that the song is pretty varied, it definitely holds my interest. It’s kind of proggy in a way. I will probably check this album out soon. 4/5

Buffalo Killers – “Let it Ride”
Very 70s sound. Had I not looked it up, I would have assumed this was a mediocre 70s blues rock band that never became well known (for good reason?). Instead, it’s a current band making mediocre retro 70s blues rock. The vocals pretty much suck, both lead and backup. Ra a a a a a iiiiide…” bleh! And the music is repetitive and uninteresting. 1/5

Gong – “The Isle of Everywhere”
I have limited experience with Gong. I have heard the album You that this song comes from, maybe twice. And I own Angel’s Egg, which I’ve also listened to just twice. I guess nothing has ever really stood out to me. With a few exceptions, the Canterbury Scene isn’t what I usually go for when it comes to prog. The song is decent but doesn’t offer anything too exciting. Again, it’s not compelling me to revisit the albums. 3/5

Gotye – “Out of My Mind”
I’ve never heard of these folks before. I enjoy this track, basically trip-hop as the vocals remind of Portishead and the beats are hip-hop. One thing that never appealed to me about Portishead were the slow vocals. These are a bit faster-paced so I like that. I find the music interesting as well, perhaps more so since I don’t usually go for female vocals. I do like the singing on this track though, but at times the backing or layered vocals were a bit much. I like the horns and bass on this song, reminds me of some trip-hop I listen to. I will check out this album eventually. Good closing track for the comp. Oh hey I just noticed they are from Belgium? I will check it out sooner than later. 4/5

Nope. While I find Zooey Deschanel's voice interesting, this song really isn't my thing.
