What's the word on the new Fat Freddy's Drop album. Anyone hear heard it yet? I'm really curious to know how it is.

The first half takes a while to grow as they have used a few electronic dance beats but the second half really comes into it's own. Another cracking release from the NZ crew.

i saw em live a few months ago. they played some new tracks. They were awesome.

It's a great release even if I don't like it as much as Based on a True Story.

I felt this same way at first, but the more I listen to this last album, the more I fall in love with it. It's slowly surpassing BOATS as my fave. I disagree with Lee about the first half of the album though, at least for me the third song ("Boondigga") was an instant hit.

I short, I liked it so much I bought it...and that doesn't happen much for me anymore.

Well, They are quickly becoming one of my favorite bands. I have Hope for a Generation and B.O.A.T.S. and both of those albums (in conjunction with The Black seeds) have been sustaining me for the past few days. I wish i'd checked them out when I first saw there name being dropped all over the place on this forum. Something about their name didn't jive with me. I dunno' I'm definitely feeling these guys.

I'm still waiting for my copy of Based On A True Story. I ordered it over 2 weeks ago from my local indie and still no sign

Satchmo you HAVE to check out there earlier E.P Live At The Matterhorn. Four songs each nearly 20 minutes long. Incredibly groovy, slow sexy jams. It's fantastic.

You know what? After repeated listenings, I think I am beginning to like it more than BOATS. Time will tell.

You know Seltzer, this is a bit off topic, but I'd be curious to know from someone one from New Zealand what the actual music scene is like over ther. It seems like all the new music I love is coming from New Zealand (well, no, but FFD and The Black Seeds account for a lot of what I'm positively raving about lately). Has there actually been a perceived growth in NZ's music scene from your perspective or has the rest of the world's exposure to it just increased?

Our music scene has its ups and downs like any, but I'd say it's pretty good in general. At the moment its main strengths are in roots/reggae/dub but we have music of a more experimental nature as well - it's fair to say we run the gamut of music. Regardless, there always seems to be a discernible NZ vibe present.

Sadly I don't get around to seeing anywhere near as much live music as I should but there's always something interesting happening. I hear there's quite a good jazz scene down in Wellington but I've never been that far south.

As for whether it has grown in the past couple of decades, I can't really say since I haven't been around for long enough. In the 80s the NZ indie scene and Flying Nun bands were internationally renowned and our current scene is getting some attention, but I'm not really sure what was going on in the time between. I'd say that increased exposure due to the net is really helping things because in the past, there was a lot of music that never really made it beyond Australia.

Btw have you heard Hollie Smith?
