Talented female musicians

Who do you consider talented female artist?
Apart from being beautiful who do you think is a very talented female musician.

(The post is intened for female musicians, I'm not saying don't post female singers but I'm sure there is a thread for female singers)

Hiromi Uehara - jazz composer and pianist
Liona Boyd - one of the best classical guitar players
Nancy Wilson - guitar player - Heart
Chissie Hynde - singer & gutiar player - Pretenders
Tina Weymouth - bass player - Talking Heads

jhar26 08-21-2009 07:42 PM

Martha Argerich
Mitsuko Uchida
Kyung Wha Chung
Sabine Meyer
Anne-Sophie Mutter
Midori
Hilary Hahn
Jacqueline Du Pre
Alice Coltrane
Regina Carter

franzfergidon 08-21-2009 07:43 PM

Hey, well, Tina Weymouth was in Tom Tom Club and she sang in that...
Haha.

I think Alison Mosshart from The Kills/The Dead Weather is pretty damn talented. She doesn't always play guitar but I think when she plays it always sounds really nice. And a lot better than I play... go figure.
Ooh, and Sharin Foo from The Raveonettes.

Uhmm... does Mo Tucker count even if I assumed that she was a guy at first cos of her hairstyle?

I really don't know them - I had to look them up. I've seen a cellist, which reminds me of Trio Rococo, but only have one album by them Norwegian Wood, amazing amazing interpretations of Beatle songs. The band has two very talented women.

Inge Mulvad Eje - Cello
Berit Spaelling - Harp

Aziza Mustafa Zadeh:

Paz Lenchantin (playing Viola in this particular clip):

Frances Chan (this clip doesn't really do her justice but she is one of the most talented pianists I've ever seen and her musical ear is superb. Also, Adam Jones and Maynard of Tool have both featured her videos on their official websites and requested to meet her at Tool concerts):

Tori Amos

And heaps more.

I thought the title of this thread said "Tainted Female Musicians", but:

Mmm...Jacqueline du Pre

Barbara Dennerlein (notice she's also playing bass with her feet)

Tal Wilkenfeld....Wow

Emily Remler, who tragically died around 20 years ago at the age of 24

I've bee following Tal Wilkenfeld for a while now.. she is just amazing. lol as a side note... I hate that interviewer so badly; sick of seeing his stupid shows every single day. What's so 'unusual' about a girl playing bass anyway?

I know. I was going to tell everyone to disregard how utterly patronizing and sexist he was being.

Ha I know, pretty much everyone in Australia hates him.

Anyway, here's another wicked lady on bass.

Another reason to add to Boob's post on Feminism about why it should still exist.

That was merely a social commentary, dear.
I laugh at the state of mankind. I don't judge it.

Female musicians

Who are the best ones?

I can only think of Kate Bush who seems to be regarded highly and I haven't even listened to her so she might not even be good.

Singers don't count unless they wrote the material themselves. Can anyone recommend any good female musicians?

Goofle 11-22-2012 10:09 AM

Mary Halvorson is my most recent find.

I will look for some of her music, thanks. Any recommendations in particular?

And thanks for the merge mods.

Norah Jones both has a beautiful voice and is very talented on the guitar and piano.

spiderhammer 11-25-2012 03:19 AM

....and nobody has said anything about 'The Great Kat' yet. As barking as you get, she is a brilliant musician.

Her album with Dangermouse is very very good. I love her voice combined with Dangermouse's fantastic production.

Also, PJ Harvey, Martina Topley Bird, Björk, Sinead O'Connor and Ane Brun are all very talented female musicians.

Kaki King- guitarist and composer

Quote:

In February 2006, Rolling Stone released a list of "The New Guitar Gods," on which King was the sole woman and youngest artist (beating Derek Trucks in age by two months as the youngest on the list).[3][4] In addition to a 10-year career that includes five LP and two EP albums, King has also scored music for television and film. She worked alongside Eddie Vedder and Michael Brook contributing music for the soundtrack to Sean Penn's Into the Wild, for which the trio received nominations for a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score.[5]
Been loving her Dreaming of Revenge Album

Right on! Also, she underappreciated I'd say; sinead o'connor is excellent.

Maybe I missed the point but isn't it inherently belittling to even draw a distinction? People are talented, gender has nothing to do with it.

I really wish I could find a quote by Siouxsie Sioux that had something to do with this.

I don't think so, it's just that female musicians are less common.
