Anti-Pop or Anti-metal?
 

To be frank, I am a anti-pop guy. I enjoy classical, folk, jazz, country, rock (mainly 60s-70s), but never pop. Because I cannot stand the pollution of brainless commercial crappy sound manufactured by BOYS or hot teenage idols. I think it is disgusting. And the so-called entrainment industry was, and is brain-washing our youth.
Rock is dead, said the Doors. I may add that metal is dead also. It´s true nowadays we can find some great artists or bands. However almost everything we hear now are controlled by international tycoon companies. Money is king.
I am sorry if it sounds ridiculous or radical. I have no intention of interfering other people ś affairs. Just feel like to express my feelings. So what´s your real feeling?

My feeling is that that's not true at all. Now, more than in the past 20 years probably, music is less controlled by tycoons because anyone can make a song and post it on myspace or cdbaby. There's more stuff to search through these days which makes it a lot harder to find good music, but it's still there. I don't know how popular independent labels were back in the 80s or 90s, but now labels like the whole Beggar's Banquet group, Sub Pop, Jagjaguwar, and tons of others seem to be giving the major labels a run for there money.

I don't think any type of music is really dead, it's just a lot of stuff has already been done so it gets a bit harder to do something new and unique. That's my take, anyway.

To be anti pop, in my opinion, means you need to close pretty much every avenue you have for hearing music outside of the internet and your own collection.

Im only 25 and it's only within the last 10 years that i have started to really get into metal. It at least seems to someone like me that there was far more metal worth listening to in the 80's and even the 90's than there is now but that is just one opinion. A lot of metal now, especially thrash, sounds like recycled attempts at something that was done 20 years ago and done much better 20 years ago aswell most of the time.

I will not however say that metal is dead. Good, new, metal bands are cropping up all the time and will continue to do so, im just not hearing as many as i would like to.

You know, you may find that that money is king if you're listening to the radio or watching music channels or anything that is going to limit your horizons to something commercial that requires said money to fund that particular avenue but branch out a little, hit the internet, you may even find that money isnt as important as it used to be.

Generally, metal has gotten to produce more self-indulgent music over the years. Also, new, ignorant breeds of fans for the genre always pop up, looking for ways to make their taste seem great by connecting their favorite metal artists to various pop culture references or whatnot to make them seem more intelligent. I don't not like metal, but I hate the way it impacts a populous of its fans to act undeservingly like they know their facts.

I wouldn't go against either, but as for the culture, I am not a fan of the general stereotypical metalhead. Pop fans I can understand. But then again, this is just a stereotype, and I'm sure not all metalheads are like that.

Do you mind explaining this a little more? I'm not arguing with you, or at least not yet, because i may just not understand your point here but most of the metal fans i know would probably be the complete opposite of this.

Utter garbage.

Kids just want to sing & dance along to a nice tune. Why the hell would your average 8 year old want to listen to Bob Dylan or Jazz.

Pop is the perfect gateway to music, It never did me any harm.

Im not anti-anything, cause genres cannot be generalized like that. Theres quality in every genre. Morrissey is classified as 'pop' by alot of people, and he's probably one of the most influental artists ever.

Pop music does get a lot of crap but there are some good non commercial pop bands. The Vaselines, Pavement, and most recently MGMT.

Yeah there's pop and then there's top 40. There's a lot of good pop out there.

Top 40 = pop
pop ≠ top 40

Well I don't think Pavement were ever popular by the standards set by most of the artists who are marketed as "pop," nor is their music super-accessible, a characteristic of most popular music. No, I wouldn't call them pop at all. Hell, they're almost posterboys for the 90s alternative movement.
