Alright, I'll get on it.

I think another thing with Johnny Hobo is his amateurish lyrics kind of add a charm to the music. I remember the first time listening to him, it felt very nostalgic, reminding me of a lot of the punk/pop-punk I listened to when I was just getting into music.

I'm liking the other mentions as well too.
I don't know if it was you that got me into them, but if it was then thanks.

How about Rise Against and Cog?

Cog are definitely a great social protest band but I doubt many on here have heard of them unfortunately!

I like them and the social stance that they take because their messages a subtle and not forced upon you, and they connect social issues with emotions. They also touch upon a lot of issues relevant to Australia like aboriginal rights and such. I guess their very similar to Midnight Oil in that respect.

good call...these guys got arrested before a show one time because they were suspected of being "terrorists"...needless to say they mentioned it during their show...

how about radiohead? a very subtle but very political band...maybe not ALL of their music but definitely the majority of hail to the thief.

I never thought about comparing them to Midnight Oil in that respect. You've got a point there. 'No Other Way' - just that one opening track from Sharing Space is enough to show where the band sit in terms of social awareness without forcing the listener to have to agree or disagree.

Subtle enough that I never even realised that they did social commentary in their songs. I'll have to revisit some of their stuff and actually listen to the lyrics..

Against Me!/Tom Gabel
Andrew Jackson Jihad

what about Bob Dylan? He doesn't even think he is a protest singer.
