Albums You're Not Digging

Most people here are constantly listening to new music and I'm sure not everyone likes 100% of what they check out. What are some albums that you gave a chance and let you down? What's on the way out of your hard drive? What didn't you like about it and what led you to listen to it in the first place?

My Disco-Paradise

The first real dud I've ever gotten from this particular blog, which is usually very reliable. This is supposed to be math rock, but it's just incredibly boring and unoriginal. Buh-bye.

AIDS Wolf - Dustin' Off the Sphynx

I've heard a lot of good things about this band, but this was the first time I got around to actually sitting down and listening to them. And I have to say, it was crap. I like noise rock so I expected better; this was half an hour of annoying crap in my headphones.

Sneer 12-09-2009 07:10 PM

Was it crap?

sidewinder 12-09-2009 07:20 PM

I've thought of starting such a thread before. I'm sure I'll contribute one of these days.

Four is too precise. Close this if you want I guess.

Behold... the Arctopus—Skullgrid
I got this about a month ago and haven't been able to get into it at all. It sounds exactly like three people masturbating to me, and not in a good way.

Took it as a personal insult. Someone please talk to this man, he needs to be back with Albert and whatshisfacce before this turns into another Morrissey/Marr deal

I didn't mind the solo album, if anything he's just trying to establish his own style, if you want the strokes... listen to the strokes.

Same here really.

Antonio 01-05-2010 08:47 PM

well not everybody can listen to that many albums in succession ;)

but really, i like this thread idea, tbh i can't really list four albums that i listened to recently that crawls up my skin. honestly, this is a little more lenient than a thread asking for four.

NumberNineDream 01-05-2010 09:15 PM

How bout merging the two threads already. We already made that same conversation in the other one, and I was surprised none of the two were closed.

Merge 'em if you want, but the OP in that thread doesn't inspire the same responses as this one does.

uhhh i'm going to ignore the thread battle for now and go ahead and post this...

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion

i'm sure many are going to argue with me on my decision...but i've listened to it 5 times trying to give it an honest chance, but it is just not working for me. i really tried...

Dr_Rez 01-06-2010 01:57 AM

Cant argue with the album art tho :)

sidewinder 01-06-2010 02:01 AM

I got the physical CD for Christmas and in real life it's not as trippy as online.

I can completely see where you're coming from, while I don't mind the album I think it receives a lot more hype (especially on this forum) than it deserves. But yeah, have to agree that the album art is pretty awesome though.

Just out of interest did you give it 5 listens because it was hyped to fuck and you thought there was something wrong with you if you don't like it or is that the usual time you give an album before deciding it wasn't for you?

Not that I mean to sound like i'm getting at you at all, i'm just curious thats all. :)

it was a combination of sounding like an album i may actually end up liking and the hype it received. most of the time i can tell on first listen whether or not an album will grow on me...i think it is this and a handful of other albums where i was truly hoping it would click and it just didn't.

maybe one day it will...but for now...i'm done

The exact same thing happened to me.... I was disappointed. The also decided to eschew liner notes, pretty much ruling out any reason to buy it.

On the album itself, I thought it was pretty good. Maybe a 6.5-7/10, it was worth getting but imo not deserving of all the hype.

Rickenbacker 01-06-2010 12:44 PM

I think a lot of dislike for Animal Collective comes from the same human need to fit in that caused so much praise for them. Not saying this applies to any of you, but I think that a lot of people say that MPP is overrated simply because the coolest thing of all is to dislike what the hipsters like. Somehow that makes said person even more of a hipster

And if anyone's wondering, I thought it was great. And when I first realized how great it was I didn't know how much Pitchfork praised it, nor did I read the review if that matters at all.

I can assure you this doesn't apply to me.... I mean I love In The Aeroplane Over The Sea for gods sake. I'll actually probably get to like this album more after a few more listens.... it seems like that sort of album.

Rickenbacker 01-06-2010 12:54 PM

The particular aspect about it that I love is the multiple vocal melodies per song. Look at Brothersport, one of my favorites from the album. Three different melodies come in quick succession, each one being built upon with the electronic instrumentation and African sounding percussion. It starts off with the "Open Up Ya, Open up ya, Open up ya throat" melody for a while and then suddenly goes into the "You got to weigh what he said to help you shape the way you play, You gotta get rid of the mourning, Sort out the habits of your mind"

Totally hit me like a brick when that happened. But that's not even the full extent of the depth of this song, because after a minute or two a totally different melody comes in, the "Until Fully Grown, you've got a real good shot" part. Awesome!

Maybe this is naive, but at that point I hadn't heard anything like this before.

My Girls was my favorite song, and yeah they use some overlapping vocal harmonies in that as well. It's done pretty nicely.

Rickenbacker 01-06-2010 03:19 PM

My Girls is the most accessible by a lot, for sure. I can't pick a favorite, but I love Also Frightened, Bluish, Daily Routine and Brothersport.

duga 01-06-2010 03:25 PM

i can't say i disliked it because i wanted to be even more of a hipster...like i mentioned i really tried to get into it. i can see how people do like it and, as i said, one day i may get into it. i could see what they were trying to do artistically and musically, which is why i did give it a few listens before i set it aside. just right now it seems like too much work to appreciate when i have so much other stuff i feel like listening to.

Can't people like or dislike anything these days without being labelled as trying to be hipster or trying to counteract the hipster trend to make themselves more hipster?! Whatever happened to just liking or disliking an album without any ulterior motives...

These social trends have been around for a long time. I don't disagree with what you're saying, I was just making a point about how music criticism affects the music listening community.

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-06-2010 04:46 PM

I think it has less to do with wanting to appear more 'hipster' and much more to do with being sick of hearing about how it's supposedly the best album of the year from just about everywhere.

I don't think that makes much of a difference when you actually listen to it yourself.
Most of the criticism I've seen of it doesn't think that it's a bad album, the main criticism I have seen of it is that it's nothing really that special.

gogojessicat 01-28-2010 02:47 AM

the weird thing is, with all the hype about animal collective you'd think they'd be good.. but they just aren't... but what's weird is.. i don't know anyone who actually likes them.

Have you heard anything other than Merriweather Post Pavilion? While their earliest stuff up till about Campfire Songs is just a little too experimental for me, most of their material isn't nearly as accessible and poppy as MPP. I'd say that their other albums warrant more listens as well, even though I do love Merriweather's replay value. I suggest listening to those albums before forming an opinion on the band as a whole; Merriweather is not representative of their style for the most part.

To prove a point:

For Reverend Green (from Strawberry Jam)

Leaf House (From Sung Tongs)

I really like them but i don't cream myself over them. To be completely honest they are a bit over-hyped, certainly by the hipsters. Merriweather Post Pavilion was in my top 5 of 2009 but it wasn't my favourite album of the year. Apart from Strawberry Jam i find their older stuff very tough to get into, but MPP is certainly an album that a lot of people can get into and like. It has some great moments, but it's not an album for everyone.

Dieselboy 01-29-2010 09:36 PM

I'll be honest, and say that I'm really not digging this after a month of really trying:

http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/image....L._AA240_.jpg

I'd heard nothing from them before, but it seemed like it would be safe to purchase without listening based on what I'd read about it. Reviews I'd read compared it to Tobacco - F*cked Up Friends (which I love), and vice versa, as they share members and have sorta similar sounds. I've given this many listens now though, and for whatever reason, just can't seem to get into the psychedelic/happy sounds on Dandelion Gum as much as I expected to. :(

The Rosedales - Once Upon A Season

Horror punk in the vein of early Misfits. Their previous album was excellent, but this one simply isn't good. It feels like a collection of songs that weren't good enough for the first album. It's nothing new and just feels stagnant.

Sucks too, because I was looking forward to this release. I suppose Calabrese is the only good Horror Punk left these days.
