5 Star Albums: Every Song

Are there any albums (any genre) on which every song merits 5 stars or whatever your highest designation is?

This is not quite the same question as 'what albums have no filler', because it seems inappropriate to call a 3 or 4 star song 'filler'. The question is also not necessarily 'what is your favorite album', because your favorites might have some filler.

Upon consulting I-Tunes, the only albums whose every track I have given 5 stars to are:

Secret Treaties - Blue Oyster Cult
Kind of Blue - Miles Davis
Saxophone Colossus - Sonny Rollins

No doubt it helps that these are relatively short albums.

Very close contenders were:

Powertrip - Monster Magnet
Crush the Insects - Reverend Bizarre
Death is this Communion - High on Fire
Master of Reality - Black Sabbath
Painkiller - Judas Priest
Tyranny and Mutation - Blue Oyster Cult

Dummy-Portishead
The Stone Roses-S/T
Led Zeppelin IV
Highway 61 Revisited-Bob Dylan
Heartworm-Whipping Boy
Illmatic-Nas
Radiator-Super Furry Animals
If You're Feeling Sinister-Belle & Sebastian

Fail.

ElephantSack 12-12-2009 11:06 AM

I'm gonna have to go with:

Mr. Bungle - California
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Pink Floyd - Animals
Between the Buried and Me - Colors
Opeth - Deliverance

Runners up
Dead Kennedys - Plastic Surgery Disasters
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Opeth - Damnation

sidewinder 12-12-2009 11:11 AM

To be honest, I think every single album I've ever heard has at least one song that's no higher than a 4. Therefore, that's all I can contribute.

Automatic Slim 12-12-2009 11:12 AM

Sorry, I meant Miles Davis. That was dumb of me.

Rickenbacker 12-12-2009 11:12 AM

I guess that which comes closest is R.E.M.'s "Reckoning," but mind you that doesn't mean it's my favorite album ever. It's just very consistently excellent.

Good call.

Wu Tang Clan - Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
Pixies - Doolittle
Operation Ivy - Energy

And although I don't really think it would fit in well wit all these other albums, I still feel like Choking Victim's No Gods / No Managers doesn't have a bad song on it.

Replace Doolittle with Surfer Rosa and you may be onto something.

BTown 12-12-2009 12:18 PM

I've always been under the impression that Doolittle was more universally accepted than Surfer Rosa but I guess that doesn't always make a 5 star album.

Rickenbacker 12-12-2009 12:20 PM

Remember also that there is a distinction between a five star album and an album filled with five star songs...

Doolittle was comparitively more mainstream, and definitely had some great songs, but Surfer Rosa is perfect from start to finish.

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-12-2009 12:45 PM

Here's a handful of albums I won't stop playing until they get to the end...

Motorhead - Overkill
The Cure - Faith
New York Dolls - S/T
Primal Scream - XTRMNTR
Iron Maiden - S/T
Slayer - Reign In Blood
Can - Ege Bamyasi
Blur - Modern Life Is Rubbish
Talking Heads - Fear Of Music
Poison Idea - Feel the Darkness
Thin Lizzy - Bad Reputation
Napalm Death - From Enslavement To Obliteration
Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance
Black Sabbath - Master Of Reality
Pulp - His & Hers

gotjuice 12-12-2009 02:20 PM

GY!BE-Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada. Kind of cheating being that it's only 2 songs, but they're both 5 stars without a shadow of a doubt.

+81 12-12-2009 02:29 PM

^Amen to that.

Refused's The Shape Of Punk To Come is perfect from start to finish. Most albums I think might fit this criteria still have at least one 4 star song.

LoathsomePete 12-12-2009 02:33 PM

Hmm... off the top of my head,

Faith No More -Angel Dust

Drive-By Truckers - Southern Rock Opera

Blackalicous - Blazing Arrow

Iggy & The Stooges - Raw Power

Been listening to This Nation's Saving Grace by The Fall a lot this past week and it's certainly looking like it could one day be in this group.

Haha this is the first thing that came to mind when I read the topic.

As for more traditional albums, Spiderland, Mezzanine, The Queen is Dead, and Portishead's Third pop up in mah head.

music_phantom13 12-12-2009 10:12 PM

You're Living All Over Me - Dinosaur Jr.
Over-Nite Sensation - Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention
Doolittle - The Pixies

I'd agree with Btown and say Doolittle. I prefer Surfer Rosa, as Doolittle sounds more like a greatest hits compilation or something... it just doesn't flow quite as well together.

Some that come extremely close:

Finding Beauty in the Wretched - Dirty Elegance because out of 18 songs, there's only 2 that don't deserve the 5 star rank from me.
Beautiful Freak - Eels
American Beauty - Grateful Dead

I'm with you on this. I really wanted to contribute something here, but after lookin through every album I have I can't honestly say there's a single one where every song is FIVE stars.

There's plenty of albums where I enjoy every song on it, but maybe my rating system is too strict, or I just don't listen to any of the right music...cause I came up with nothin.

Even some of my favorite groups only have five or so songs that I would rate an absolute 5 when I think about it. Oh well.

+81 12-12-2009 10:34 PM

I was going to say YLAOM also but I just can't say Poledo is 5 stars.

Bulldog 12-13-2009 07:20 AM

Off the top of my head, each of these...

Ali Farka Touré & Toumani Diabaté - In the Heart Of the Moon
The Fall - The Infotainment Scan
Scott Walker - The Drift
David Bowie - "Heroes"
Steel Pulse - True Democracy
Dead Can Dance - The Serpent's Egg
Nick Cave - No More Shall We Part
The The - Mind Bomb
Barrington Levvy - Here I Come
Augustus Pablo - East Of the River Nile
Junkie XL - Today
The Future Sound Of London - Lifeforms
Black Uhuru - Red
Frank Zappa - Hot Rats
Supergrass - Road To Rouen
Midnight Oil - Earth and Sun and Moon

...and probably a few more are pretty much spotless when it comes to quality.

p7byrd 12-13-2009 08:41 AM

Superunknown - Soundgarden
Violator - Depeche Mode
The Queen is Dead - The Smiths

Because of the stupid four image limit:
Electric Tears- Buckethead
Are You Experienced- Hendrix

albums I almost listed but have atleast one four and a half star or lower

Appetite For Destruction- due to "You're Crazy"
Black Holes and Revelations- due to "Supermassive Black Hole"

A few that seem to have been forgotten:

Pink Floyd - Animals

John Coltrane - A love Supreme

Violent Femmes - self titled

I'd have to agree, that was also the reason I didn't mention it.

A couple more:
Fugazi - 13 Songs
Minor Threat - Discography
The Specials - s/t
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
(Can't remember if I already mentioned Wu-Tang's 36 chambers or not)

Heres my personal picks

5. "I Can't Remember" 3:42
6. "Love, Hate, Love" 6:26
7. "It Ain't Like That" 4:37
8. "Sunshine" 4:44
9. "Put You Down" 3:16
10. "Confusion" 5:44
11. "I Know Somethin' ('bout You)" 4:22
12. "Real Thing" 4:03

Purple Rain by Prince
1984

http://www.soundstagedirect.com/medi...urple_rain.jpg

1."Let's Go Crazy" – 4:39
2."Take Me with U" – 3:54
3."The Beautiful Ones" – 5:13
4."Computer Blue" – 3:59
5."Darling Nikki" – 4:14

Side two

1."When Doves Cry" – 5:54
2."I Would Die 4 U" – 2:49
3."Baby I'm a Star" – 4:24
4."Purple Rain" – 8:41

Runner up:

Wanted! The Outlaws by Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Tompall Glaser, Jessi Colter
1974

http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...5dcf/53913.jpg

1."My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys" (Sharon Rice) – 2:48
Performed by Jennings
2."Honky Tonk Heroes" (Billy Joe Shaver) – 3:27
Performed by Jennings
3."What's Happened to Blue Eyes" (Jessi Colter) – 2:15
Performed by Colter
4."You Mean to Say" (Colter) – 2:28
Performed by Colter
5."Suspicious Minds" (Mark James) – 3:55
Performed by Jennings and Colter
[edit] Side two
1."Good Hearted Woman" [Live] (Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson) – 2:56
Performed by Jennings and Nelson
2."Heaven or Hell" (Nelson) – 1:37
Performed by Jennings and Nelson
3."Me and Paul" (Nelson) – 3:45
Performed by Nelson
4."Yesterday's Wine" (Nelson) – 2:58
Performed by Nelson
5."T for Texas" (Jimmie Rodgers) – 4:12
Performed by Glaser
6."Put Another Log on the Fire (Male Chauvinist National Anthem)" (Shel Silverstein) – 2:16
Performed by Glaser

Even though this album is legendary, I just can't make myself put this up there in my top slots because of Jessi Colter. The woman didn't earn her position on this album because she was a good singer, I will assure you. Being Waylon Jennings' girlfriend didn't hurt her opportunites in the business, thats for damn sure.

Gandalf 12-13-2009 11:24 AM

Frank Zappa-Joe's Gargae
Queensryche-Operation Mindcrime
Jeff Beck-Truth

You should rename the thread, "Albums That You Have to Listen to Again, When They're Done." Fantastic album!

Joni Mitchell - Blue
The Band - S/T
Richard and Linda Thompson - I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight
ABC - Lexicon of Love
Roxy Music - Country Life
David Bowie - Alladdin Sane
Manic Street Preachers - Holy Bible
Melvins - Houdini
Metal Church - S/T
Voidvod - Diminesion Hatross
Sepultura - Beneath the Remains

I recently started using the rating feature on iTunes, and so far only two albums in my iTunes library have recieved five stars from me on all songs, those are:
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/...982c9010.L.jpg
http://www.jensunmack.dk/wordpress-2...re_we_come.jpg

gunnels 12-13-2009 02:09 PM

The Mars Volta- Frances the Mute.
Song by song it's perfect and their best album. However there is something about De-Loused that makes me love it more despite all of its flaws. Some sort of magic.

Frank Zappa- Hot Rats
Oh Christ it's whimsical. It's like a ****ing disney movie made love to Charles Mingus and an electric guitar.

That's all really, but I'm always looking to change that.

I think I'd pick Dirt over this, not just because its more mainstream but because I truly think Dirt is a better album. Still cool to see Alice In Chains of any kind in here.

I'm gonna add
Bad Brains - s/t
Black Flag - Damaged
