There's a sequence in the game where you're in one of Max's nightmares. You have to navigate through this darkness, following a bloody trail, hoping to get to your child's room before your wife and kid gets brutally murdered.
The creepy thing was that while following this blood trail in the darkness, you hear a baby crying and the crying gets so intense (particularly on headphones!). There are times when the loud wailing doesn't sound entirely human anymore which fits the surrealism of the dream.
I'm sure this was more impressive back then. Today, it might feel more like a dated video game, but I thought it quite effective back then. ;)

Holy ****, ever since I played these levels, I've been trying to find things similar to this (music-wise esp.) :D
Honestly, I have never been this freaked out by a video game before.
The music and ambiance mixed with those disturbing images are burned into my mind.
Seriously I dare anyone to find me music that is more horrifying than these nightmares.
