Best and worst music to listen to while you're high.

Not that I'm encouraging anyone to smoke marijuana and all that, but I'm sure there are plenty of you here that smoke and listen to music high so let's hear it. What are your favorite genres of music to listen to while you're stoned out of your mind (for those who smoke of course). Also what genres of music do you think are the worst to listen to while you're high. Here's my list.

Best Music:
Dubstep
Trance
Stoner Rock/Metal
Doom Metal
Psychedelic Rock
Blues Rock
Grunge/Alternative Rock (I'll admit, while I'm not exactly the biggest fan of this music, it generally sounds a hell of alot better when I'm high, as with most other music that has downtuned guitars.)

Worst Music:
Glam Metal (even if you're a huge fan of this stuff which I happen to be, I wouldn't exactly recommend listening to this music while high unless you want a good laugh =P)
Eurodance (basically for the same reason only worse)
Disco (I have a hard time taking this music seriously even when I'm sober)
Hip Hop/Rap (Im my opinion, this music sounds bad whether I'm sober or high =P, unless there's rapping in electronic dance songs.)
Most Pop Rock and Pop in general

duga 01-06-2010 01:30 AM

i dunno...i can find appreciation in anything, really.

even hip hop which i actually enjoy a lot more while smoking...though hip hop and shrooms do NOT mix...

LoathsomePete 01-06-2010 01:34 AM

I love throwing on Dummy by Portishead or Mezzanine by Massive Attack after smoking and just sitting back to read. Trip-hop would definitely have to be my favourite genre to get high to, but really... sometimes I'm just too lazy to care.

Dr_Rez 01-06-2010 01:41 AM

This could prob go in drug thread.

This relates to music though.

Serge_Gee 01-06-2010 08:05 AM

To be honest as long as its good music the genre doesnt matter...you tend to hear some awesome elements you would have missed after a smoke...I cant choose...its too tough a call!!!

FETCHER. 01-06-2010 09:52 AM

I find myself enjoying slow songs more, tranceto be exact, songs that are all over the place just make me on edge. Like wolfgang gartners 5th symphony scared me when the bang happens, something smooth and predictable is good. For me.

Truth. Back in my smoking days I could listen to and enjoy a wide variety of music while stoned. Rock, metal, punk, industrial, hip-hop, etc. It's while doing other drugs like X or LSD that I had favorites. Deep house/garage house for X, and Skinny Puppy for LSD.

Wait...I didn't do drugs. What am I talking about. Move along, nothing to see here.

Multipurpose!

Black Flag and Discharge are horrible when you're high

Zer0 01-06-2010 02:14 PM

I love listening to The Chemical Brothers, Massive Attack and Boards Of Canada when i'm stoned. Good deep sounding basslines and hypnotic sounds are great after a few smokes. As for more guitar-based stuff, one of my greatest musical experiences was the first time i listened to My Bloody Valentine's Loveless album stoned, it sounded truly out of this world. Some doom and stoner metal is always good after a few smokes, especially Electric Wizard, Reverend Bizzare and Kyuss.

As for worst music probably punk and hardcore. They're not really meant to be listened to while high.

I actually have a drug play list on my Ipod, because whenever I'm high, I need to listen to a compilation of songs. Though the list is set to shuffle, whenever I'm high and listen to music, I start with the Dylan song.

Also, if you haven't heard a particular song on this list before, I implore you to go to this site: Grooveshark - Listen to Free Music Online - Internet Radio - Free MP3 Streaming , it's a site where you can search for almost any song and listen to it in full, unlike last.fm. I have no idea how it's legal or why it stays up, but it's free. I hope this doesn't count as advertising, because essentially it's like searching for songs on Youtube except there's no video and its easier to find what you are looking for.

1. It Takes a lot to Laugh it Takes a Train to Cry - Bob Dylan
2. Sunshine of Your Love - Cream
3. The State I Am In - Belle and Sebastian(I love how it builds up but his voice stays the same tone, always makes me wanna dance for some reason)
4. Rain - The Beatles
5. Can't Find My Way Home(Electric Version) - Blind Faith
6. 4+20 - Crosby, Stills and Nash
7. Come On Lets Go - Broadcast
8. Venus in Furs - The Velvet Underground
9. Argument - Fugazi
10. Friend of the Devil - The Grateful Dead
11. Everything in its Right Place - Radiohead
12. End Result - Jeffrey Lewis(an acoustic cover of a Crass song, amazing lyrics with an awesome bittersweet, folksy delivery)
13. Rebellion(Lies) - Arcade Fire
14. Snow Song Part 1(Live in San Fran) - Neutral Milk Hotel Note: It's complicated to find the particular performance I'm talking about. requires you to go to GROOVESHARK and search for EVERYTHING IS by NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL, the site mislabeled the song, so it's actually titled after the EP the song was released on. It is the best performance I've ever heard from NMH, and this includes everything on their albums.
15. I'll Believe in Anything - Wolf Parade
16. Gimme Shelter - The Rolling Stones
17. Who Could Win A Rabbit - Animal Collective
18. Paper Planes - MIA(album version!)
19. Train in Vain - The Clash
20. Where is My Mind? - Pixies
21. Trilogy: B) Hyperstation - Sonic Youth
22. Tomorrow Never Knows - The Beatles
23. See No Evil - Television
24. The Modern Age - The Strokes
25. Just Like Honey - The Jesus and Mary Chain
26. You are the Generation that Bought More Shoes and You Get What You Deserve - Johnny Boy
27. We Dance - Pavement
28. 3rd Planet - Modest Mouse
29. White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane

This list usually gets me going , but in a good way.

Wow, you're a pretty organised drug user. I just fling on whatever I feel like listening to.

That's The Brak Album.

Half an hour of mind-fuck suitable only for the prepubescent insane.

I used to listen to it when I was 14 and would get high after school everyday.
Even listened to it on acid once. Don't. Do. That.

Sounds nuts. I'm very curious to check it out though for the laugh :D i'll keep away from the acid then...

ElephantSack 01-06-2010 04:18 PM

You know, its funny. Talking about it has convinced me to download it, just because I haven't heard it in years.

Ray charles!

OceanAndSilence 01-07-2010 04:42 PM

just play music yourself when you're high... seriously it's so different yet awesome than what you'd normally do.
as far as listening goes, i enjoy everything more, although it depends on my mood.

khfreek 01-07-2010 05:04 PM

Has no body mentioned Pink Floyd? Not that I smoke myself, but I've heard it's quite the experience.

bungalow 01-07-2010 09:54 PM

jazz is the best music to listen to stoned this is an objective fact that everyone knows. except the people in this thread who are an anomaly.

Gavin B. 01-07-2010 09:55 PM

I like to listen to hardcore lounge music when I'm stoned like Les Baxter, Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66, Julie London, Jimmy Webb and Anita O' Day.

Martin Denny's mambo-tiki lounge with all of the ambient monkey hooting and exotic bird squawking will bring about a cosmic epiphany on LSD. Martin Denny: Ambient music prophet or drunken fool who made animal noises while he played piano? You decide.

On the other hand listening to the other song embedded below while trippin' on acid; you're likely to get an involutary tour of duty in a locked ward of a mental institution... if you get my drift. Please note the amibent hammering sounds at the beginning of song. It sounds like someone banging nails into roof shingles.

Do this for me.

GravitySlips 01-08-2010 08:48 PM

Can, Spacemen 3, Galaxie 500, Animal Collective, Yo La Tengo, Slowdive, Bowery Electric, Stars of the Lid, Labradford, Windy & Carl

These bands tend to be what I most regularly listen to when i'm high. However it can be anything really ...

I can't read high ... unless it's one word over and over ... usually when high anymore I just listen to the sounds around my apartment, or in my brain ... but sometimes I do well with Coltrane or some very spaced out gnarly electric guitar things (Royal Trux, Jimi Hendrix, Six Organs Of Admittance)

GravitySlips 01-08-2010 09:04 PM

Oh yeah, Six Organs of Admittance is one of my favourites to listen to when I'm smoking too. Nice call!

Cadrian 01-26-2010 03:16 PM

usually its just putting the Zune on Shuffle.... but that leads to a whole session of someone sitting over the skip button....

Pretty much any music that I can listen to anytime.... is good music when smoking. Maybe some thrash metal or some really bad pop music, would be the worst for me. I dont really know.

My favs I guess would be
Collie Buddz- Self Titled Album

The movement (Kind of a Regional band)

Lately a lot of Citizen Cope....

Besides that that
Sublime
Radiohead
Portishead
Bob Dylan
Slightly Stoopid
Expendables
The list pretty much is anything, kinda why usually we just put the IPOD or Zune on Random.

Terrible Lizard 01-26-2010 03:35 PM

Murky Chronic + Bach = Crying like a bitch

Muzak 01-26-2010 07:38 PM

anything that is Funky, especially Funk!

a lot of experimental stuff, especially ones that do a lot of crazy sampling (like Dosh or Coil).

theres plenty of Jazz Fusion that is amazing high and really trippy (like Medeski, Martin & Wood)

Reggae of course. A fair amount of Ska can fall in here as well.

TheImpossiblePrince 02-12-2010 12:53 PM

Anything by "Nightmares On Wax" would be more than fitting. I've always found the first "Crosby Stills & Nash" album to be a great listen when i kick back and chill out.

clutnuckle 02-12-2010 02:32 PM

Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here works wonders (sorry stereotypes!). I also really like Portishead's Dummy and Animal Collective's 'Sung Tongs'.
