^First album that came to mind when I read this thread.

Going by the idea of what you'd pick up first just to listen to...here's my list. 2-4 are Fabriclive mix's, which are mostly mixes of electronica genre's with quite a bit of variety thrown in as well.

DJ Shadow - Entroducing
Fabriclive 35 - Marcus Intalex (DnB)
Fabriclive 22 - Scratch Perverts (Hip-Hop/DnB)
Fabriclive 26 - Herbaliser (Hip-Hop/Funk)
Air - Moon Safari
Dieselboy - Dungeon-masters Guide
Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Between the Buried and Me - Colors
Chick Corea - Time Warp
Noir (Anime) - OST
Propellerheads - Decksanddrumsandrockandroll
The Faint - Wet From Birth
Cirrus - Counterfeit
I Am Ghost - Lover's Requiem
KMFDM - Retro

Yeah, that was seriously tough.

Edit: Wow, I forgot BT - Movement In Still Life...that would be my 16th pick up...

After thinking it through, a few come to mind for various reasons.

Yes - Close to the Edge - Not an album I like to really listen anymore, but I'd just have to have this one again. It was not only what started my collection, but it made me very ambitious. I picked it up a few hours away from home when I was 13 or so, and the owner told me it was an original press that he just wanted to sell for about 6 or 7 dollars. Truth be told I had no idea if he was lying or not, but the cover was aged so I took it. He ended up being sincere, and it's something I could never let go of. Just that whole feeling of '**** YES I'M INTO VINYL'.

Explosions in the Sky - The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place - Basically just because it's the most beautiful album I've ever heard played on a record. I bought it when I was literally going through a post-rock obsession (although I strongly believe TEINACDP is the only EITS album worth writing home about). This album speaks so much when it's on the stand.

Dead Kennedys - In God We Trust, Inc. - I really like this EP and all, but I just could never let go of my copy, even though it's a boring repress. I brought this in when I did a speech on Jello Biafra in English class and everybody thought I was the coolest kid on the block for the hour. Jello would totally be ecstatic that I use music to gain some form of popularity, he'd be ecstatic!

John Coltrane - Sun Ship - Badass half-way to free jazz Coltrane.Sounds pristine, the cover is something I find myself looking at for hours, and I practically begged to afford it. It's a repress, as well, but it's still damn lovely.

I've started my music collection over from scratch at least a handful of times. While I don't think ahead long enough to know what my next 15 albums are going to be, it become a ritual to acquire Pink Floyd-Animals, Beethoven's Piano Sonatas 14, 23, 8, and Miles Davis-Bitches Brew as my first three acquired albums.

.

That EP is a tough little gem not to like. I wrote a report on Jello for a guitar class assignment back in middle school. If only I could have gained some sort of social acceptance because of it. :)

Alright, let's see. Seeing as how were just starting over, meaning these would be the ones to tie me over until I restore my collection to it's former glory...

Between the Buried and Me - Colors
Pink Floyd - Animals
Opeth - Deliverance
Mr. Bungle - California
Grails - Doomsdayer's Holiday
Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced?
Dead Kennedys - Plastic Surgery Disasters
Alice in Chains - Dirt
Soundgarden - Superunknown
Tool - Aenima
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
NOFX - Pump up the Valium
Bad Religion - All Ages
Primus - Pork Soda
Tom Waits - Real Gone

I made it a point not to name any artist more than once.

people hate Drinking in LA? i never knew. i think all three of their albums (Bran Van 3000) are fantastic. but i do hate the fact that i've never decided what genre to call them in foobar :D

i do like it quite a lot. in fact, i got to see him on that tour. it was the first night he played at Royal Albert Hall. Crosby and Nash were there doing backups, and Bowie made a guest appearance to sing Arnold Layne and then Waters' parts on Comfortably Numb. it was the best show ever!

i just call them eclectic although admittedly i've never listened to a full album besides their debut. a lot of canadians from my generation can't stand Drinking in LA because it got so overplayed when it first came out. personally it was Len's 'Steal my Sunshine' that angered me to no end around the same time period hahaha.

noise 02-05-2010 01:15 AM

oh you're canadian, that explains it :D

i don't think they ever got much airplay outside of canada.

don't even remember how i came across them - it was years ago. great band.
