Offbeat Observations About Music

Not saying they have to be really funny, just enough to raise a knowing smirk.

For example.....

Typing out the tracklisting for Napalm Death's Scum album takes longer to do than what it would to listen to the bloody thing.

Got that?

Good

Away you go then.

Anteater 02-16-2010 03:55 PM

Every time I see a track less than 2 minutes with the word "Intro" in its name, I know I'll never listen to it.

Next.

duga 02-16-2010 04:09 PM

In Indiana, I guarantee if you go out to a bar you WILL hear Journey's 'Don't Stop Believing' before the end of the night.

In fact, there was an acoustic band playing last Thursday and they were playing a great selection. Then all the sudden I hear it. Yep....even with a live acoustic band I had to endure this song.

Oh, and the entire ****ing bar sings along to it.

someonecompletelyrandom 02-16-2010 04:14 PM

Love Shack is played at kids parties. Love Shack. Love Shack.

NumberNineDream 02-16-2010 04:42 PM

I think the song I heard the most in my life is Bohemian Rhapsody, and not because I like this song, but because every frickin' day, someone feels the need to show off his ability to sing all the lyrics, in five different voices of the most puking hideousness.

TumorAttitude 03-16-2010 08:40 PM

Why do they play country music at roller rinks?
I live in Ohio. I don't hear it much. Don't ask me why I was in a roller rink. I know this isn't 1974 but I was. And they were playing country music. Not just one song, a continuous loop of country songs. The roller rink was filled with preteens who bitched and requested Lil' Wayne songs all night.

I'm guilty of this. :o:

I think we've arrived at the crux of your problem right here...

there should be a rule prohibiting cover band's from "posting new tunes" to their myspace pages. if you are a cover band, you, in fact, never have "new tunes" to post. sorta an oxymoron.

I disagree strongly.

Cover bands can be a good starting point for musicians who still need to gain some musical knowledge and build enough confidence to write their own material.

white/noise 03-17-2010 11:22 AM

How bout cover bands full of 50 year old dudes, doing buckcherry and three days grace songs? Can we ban those?

boo boo 03-17-2010 11:29 AM

Sure.

There's a massive difference between a cover band and a band who play covers.

Do you dislike cover bands in general, then?
I went to see Australian Pink Floyd and I don't regret it.

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-17-2010 12:42 PM

I only have one experience of a cover act.

It was someone doing Shakira.

She looked more like Tina Turner.

Tell me she didn't do any dancing.

I have no idea, She was either dancing or suffering a stroke.

Bearing in mind the possible confusion between the two things, and the fact that she looked like Tina Turner, I'd say the latter possibility is most likely true.
Were reduced outfits involved?

There should be a rule prohibiting apostrophes being used for pluralizing a word. Oh wait, there is! :p:

Meh...If they're obviously a cover band and not claiming the material as their own, then whatever they perform is a new song. "New tune" doesn't imply "we just wrote this" if you already know it's a cover band.

Alopecia by Why? may be the single whitest album ever made.
While this may be the whitest song ever made.

Well it all depends where he is from, he might be from Pittsburgh or Philadelphia, I think it would only be "even funnier" if he was from Claysville, PA.

Kinda like how it would depend if the other poster was from Cincinnati, Columbus, or Cleveland instead of Eaton, Ohio?

Well yeah that's because people from rural and urban areas generally have different tastes, it is hard to please everyone, you have to find a song that would suit both

a slight tangent to this initial comment.

i've noticed more variety and ability with Canadian musicians who come from a French background over their English counterparts, and i think the rural / urban angle plays a big factor in that, especially on the east coast.

it's not that one is better than the other but the English areas are more urbanized and rather than promote diversity it seems to have the opposite effect. musicians seem to become either too concerned with maintaining the integrity they had when they first started out that they don't branch out of their comfort zone as much or they end up getting too caught up in the scene - especially when they've been part of 'the scene' since high school.

on the flip side the French musicians tend to grow up in more rural areas and lack the 'big city diversions' their English counterparts have and in turn end up stretching out more and spending more time honing their chops.

on the more national level, you hear far more prog-ish raggae influence far more often in popular music coming out of Quebec than anywhere else in Canada where the bulk of the offerings stick to established methods.

not exactly offbeat but an observation none the less.

The best song from Raditude by far.

Most people who listen to power metal play Dungeons & Dragons

Singing Bobby Mcferrin's piece in the bathroom. There's always a measure or 2 with some bass note you can't play and you do some strange humming..goes great with the sound of the water.

One time when I was under the shower I raised my head to sing a high note loud and water started to fill my mouth and I choked in a weird way.

Daktari 03-19-2010 09:51 AM

This is more of an amusing musical anecdote:

Ok, last Summer we had a cook out and I had the good old 'LEGEND' album playing in the background. Suddenly our youngest grand daughter stomps up and says,

"I'm not keen on this, can we have Hawaiian on".

Ok, I thought it was an unusual request but thought she may have been doing Hawaii at school or she may have seen it on 'Dora the Explorer' or something. After searching for about 10 minutes I found something vaguely Hawaiian and put it on. I asked her if that was ok...

"No", she said, "I wanted 'In the Jungle, Hawaiian Sleeps Tonight" like in 'the Lion King'.

Strange but true....

Everytime I tried singing black/death metal styled vocals in the shower, I would always end up hiccupping. =P

Pitchfork refuses to give metal albums "Best New Music", unless the metal band is either Mastodon or Sunn O))), because hipsters love Mastodon and Sun O))).

to prove this theory correct:

three metal albums:
Pitchfork: Album Reviews: Baroness: Blue Record
Pitchfork: Album Reviews: Pig Destroyer: Phantom Limb
Pitchfork: Album Reviews: Converge: Axe to Fall

three indie albums:
Pitchfork: Album Reviews: Liars: Sisterworld
Pitchfork: Album Reviews: The Morning Benders: Big Echo
Pitchfork: Album Reviews: Atlas Sound: Logos

The three metal albums all managed to score higher than all three indie albums, yet none of the metal albums were awarded "Best New Music", and the three indie albums were.

This is because Pitchfork knows that hipsters won't enjoy the metal albums, but they will absolutely eat up the indie ones. So once a hipster hears about a few BNMs, spins them, and likes them, they keep coming back to Pitchfork for more.

A friend and occasional MBer pointed this out to me and I'd say he's absolutely right.
