Biggest One Hit Wonder?

I did a quick search and was surprised not to find a similar thread.

Anyway, what do you think was the biggest one hit wonder? It can be a song, album, whatever.

I'll start off with (though I know you can guys can do better) LEN - Steal My Sunshine. I loved the song a lot more before I found out the band totally sucks.

AHHHHH FAK YOU!!!!!!!!!!

i tried so hard to avoid just seeing that track name while putting together Canadian clips for that other thread because just seeing that name is enough to get that insipid single stuck in my head for a solid month ARRRRRRRRRHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

pretty sure Soulja Boy takes the cake as biggest one hit wonder though.

Astronomer 04-15-2010 11:26 PM

Is it bad that I enjoy that Len song? I remember when it first came out I was about 11 and my sister bought the single for my birthday...

As for other one hit wonders, I'd have to say The Knack - My Sharona.

boo boo 04-15-2010 11:32 PM

Genius of Love by Tom Tom Club is probably the best pop song ever made.

No Rain by Blind Melon is also a big favorite.

duga 04-15-2010 11:34 PM

Blind Melon are not one hit wonders....

They are excellent.

I get tired of people slamming them because all they have actually listened to by them is "No Rain".

Go listen to Soup and then tell me they are one hit wonders. God damn.

mr dave 04-15-2010 11:42 PM

^it's true though, 'Toes Across the Floor' wasn't as big as 'No Rain' but still a great single and video. 'Tones of Home' and 'Galaxie' also charted well. they're also one of those bands where the studio albums do little to no justice to their live performances.

RVCA 04-15-2010 11:47 PM

I had their Best Of compilation at one point. Deleted it after I decided that they were indeed one-hit-wonders. (Kept No Rain of course)

Guess it's just preference

Unfortunately, The Buggles. Video Killed The Radio Star is a hell of a song though.

I'm sure Journey had other hits but people only know them for one song.

Aww, cmon.

The wheel in the sky keeps on turnin'...

+81 04-16-2010 12:17 AM

Eh, I don't think it's nearly as known. It's certainly not super instantly recognizable to me anyway (might have heard it a time or two before). Good song though.

mr dave 04-16-2010 01:00 AM

just because people only remember one hit does not mean that the band is a one-hit wonder, that's just not how the concept works.

a one hit wonder really only has one major hit. usually some kind of hokey, cliched, and incredibly annoying song that gets overplayed for a summer.

like this guy... could not escape this video in the late 90s, never touched the map outside his local scene afterwards (if he even continued in his local scene).

though i clearly remember an interview where he vehemently denied being a one-hit wonder and that his subsequent singles would top this. they never got released in north america.

+81 04-16-2010 01:25 AM

Well I'm talking big hits (the biggest), not necessarily being technical about it. I hear ya though.

mr dave 04-16-2010 01:33 AM

^it's all good. now had Journey fallen off the face of the Earth after releasing 'Don't Stop Believing' then we might have a contender for biggest one hit wonder.

although... would you believe that song peaked at #8 on the US charts?

Do do do do, can't touch this.

Zager and Evans - In The Year 2525

20 million sold, thought to be the 7th best selling single of all time.

Here's one off the top of the head. Not among the biggest-selling, but it's worth mentioning;

They were the bee-girls guys, right?

Don't worry, I'm kidding, but if I had to pick one I'd say James - Pretty is one of my favorites.

And they aren't big enough to win, but White Towns "Your Woman" is pretty great as well. When you remix star wars ATAT's, you know some ****s going to go well.

lmao! yes. :D:D

Stone Birds 04-16-2010 09:09 AM

cmon none of those are even comparable to this:

TheBig3 04-16-2010 09:11 AM

lol, I don't know man. That one was lucky to be around in the American Idol zeitgeist.

Stone Birds 04-16-2010 09:13 AM

Holy crap big3 isn't a mod what has the world come to!!!

boo boo 04-16-2010 09:26 AM

One band I've been into a lot lately is Focus, very underrated group, amazing guitarist.

People outside of the Netherlands only know them for this.

ameebamee 04-16-2010 09:32 AM

Maybe they had more hits in other countries...? But: Los Del Rio- Macarena. Although M.C. Hammer definitely was a good answer. And then he reminds me of Vanilla Ice- Ice Ice Baby.

Yesterday on the John Tesh Radio Program (don't judge!), he said that 50% of Americans (I think it was 50%...or 53%, or something) admit to have done the Macarena at least once in their life. Interesting.

I wasn't coming enough. I'm here a lot this week because of a work issue. Also, I get to mix it up a little more without the whole world crying about how I shouldn't be a mod.

bubu 04-16-2010 11:33 AM

Macarena seconded.

Everyone did the Macarena at least once... all you need to do is get drunk with some friends and have someone put the song, no one could resist.

he's half sounding like C&C Music Factory in this one hahaha

duga 04-16-2010 03:22 PM

Yeah, Hammer was big enough to get Vanilla Ice to rip him off. Ahh...the 90's.

mr dave 04-16-2010 03:27 PM

i STILL see people with those stupid effing pants now too hahhaa

Oh christ, i remember my older sister getting that single on cassette when it came out and playing it non-stop.

One of the most retarded things i ever saw was a few girls doing the macarena to Whigfield's 'Saturday Night' in a nightclub recently. I laughed...

But speaking of one-hit wonders here's a guilty pleasure that brings back good memories

duga 04-16-2010 03:33 PM

Here's another 90's gem for ya:

I really don't know if they had any other hits, TBH, but this is the only one people know by them these days. In fact, I doubt most people even know the band's name. This is just one of those "THIS song!!!" songs.

CanwllCorfe 04-16-2010 03:43 PM

Ones that I remember

YouTube - Bobby McFerrin - Don't Worry Be Happy

YouTube - Scatman John: Scatman music video

Hahaha I totally forgot about this one...it was HUGE when I was in the 8th grade. I remember we always tried to figure out if he was saying anything or if it was just gibberish. We all settled on "I'm blue if I was green I would die", but it's probably just gibberish.

damn dude that was my last year of college hahaha i thought we were closer to the same age here

enough with the cheese, here's a legitimately great one hit wonder from like '97

and now i'm gonna go rock the hell out of little plastic drums on that track in guitar hero 5

duga 04-16-2010 04:58 PM

I get that a lot. Honestly, I may as well be a 30 year old...I tend to act like it.

I love it so much! It's so inspiring and even though the advice is kinda humorous it feels "profound" or something

Yeah I remember that! I was just happy that electronic music was starting to become popular. So many memories
