Did I mention wtf? Still, I'm really fascinated by it. When I first saw photos of this group (Malice Mizer) my head exploded.

I really haven't been the same since. u_u
They look really interesting and cool. What does the music sound like?

Usually, a mix between industrial, baroque, and 80s. It was a late 90s/early 00s thing in Japan, so a sort of Japanesse twist on the 80s glam rock thing in the UK and the US. Since there were a lot of grungy things going on in the 90s, visual kei took elements of that but mixed with classic 80s. If that makes any sense?

Other good examples include Psycho le Cemu, Moi dix Mois, and X-Japan.

There are still a few bands making music like it, too, although their look has toned down quite a bit... Dir en Grey is one of them. Very old and revered band in the Japanese rock scene.

Here are some examples --

Here's a kind of rarer live, circa 2003 -

This is one of the most inaccurate description of Visual-kei i've ever read.

Let's hear yours, then. As far as I understand there are a wide range of interpretations, so I'm curious about your opinion, too.

Wikipedia says -- "Some sources think that visual kei refers to a music genre, with its sound usually related to glam rock, punk rock and heavy metal. However, this is contradictory to the fact that visual kei acts play various genres, including those unrelated to rock such as electronic, pop, etc."

I would agree with that, but I think it's good to note the baroque elements.
