The Perfect Compromise

I pose a challenge for the members of MusicBanter: from the descriptions of these polar roots, find a compromising album each member could agree on.

The Five Personalities

Dragon -- vigorous, strong, self-assured, direct, fiery, intense, and competitive. Can be arrogant, demanding, and brash. With origins tracing back to nu-metal, this individual also enjoys old thrash, grunge and metalcore. They will stoop to Disturbed and Three Doors Down, but dignify themselves with Master of Puppets and Lateralus. Gets along with the Tiger over KoRn, but disagrees with the Sheep over Jack Johnson.

Monkey -- flexible, innovative, improviser, problem-solver, artistic, forward-thinking, unique, and divergent. Can be jealous, snobbish, and self-centered. Always one to be current, this individual traces back to 60s counter-culture, but today is everything indie. Listening to Sum 41 because no one else does, they listen to plenty of music nobody has ever heard of, but favorites include The Shins and TV on the Radio. Gets along with the Sheep over Citizen Cope, but disagrees with the Rabbit over Phish.

Tiger -- unpredictable, rebellious, impulsive, stimulating, energetic, deep, passionate, and reactive. Can be reckless, impatient, and foul. Affected by the punk-funk of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, this one likes it fast like Superchunk and funky like Primus. Sometimes--and rather unfortunately--entangled in nu-metal and pop-punk. Gets along with the Dragon over Rage Against the Machine, but disagrees with the Monkey over Animal Collective.

Rabbit -- sensitive, elegant, artistic, thorough, tender, astute, compassionate, and cultured. Can be detached, self-indulgent, and stubborn. Jam bands of the 1970s are where they started, but today the diverse indie sound is their home. High on their list are the bluesy Black Keys and anything offering a lineup that includes the piano or horns. Gets along with the Monkey over Vampire Weekend, but disagrees with the Dragon over Reign in Blood.

Sheep -- righteous, shy, gentle, peaceful, reserved, caring, pure, and seeks security. Can be primitive, pessimistic, and bland. It better be acoustic and thoughtful, like Jason Mraz. They hold no shame in singer-songwriters, sometimes to a fault. It should be diverse like Dispatch, but not too long. Gets along with the Rabbit over Dave Matthews Band, but disagrees with the Tiger over Double Nickels on the Dime.

Which album--from any where and any time in music history--might provide enjoyment for all five of these forces? What is the Perfect Compromise?

Well, it just doesn't fit the description. I don't like them, but if you do fair enough. Just the wrong thread. Don't be so down on yourself man.

Charlemagne 07-15-2010 11:31 PM

The Format- Interventions and Lullabies? Or would that be too poppy for the dragon? I can see it fitting into the Monkey, Rabbit, Sheep (and possibly Tiger).

Animals As Leaders S/T album? I think that satisfies every personality, or maybe the fact that it's instrumental ruins it?

If it doesn't come up the first time, refresh the page and it will definitely come up.

Interesting idea, as I do think it at least somewhat appeases four of the five. However, I don't think the Sheep, who is the singer-song-writer type, would like an instrumental album. Admirable selection though... :thumb:

My thoughts exactly.
Hmm... I must find this magical album.
How about Devin Townsend's Ocean Machine: Biomech?

As far as I can tell, it appeases all five.

mr dave 07-16-2010 07:32 AM

interesting enough experiment, but why did you drop the 7 other animals in the Chinese Zodiac?

also, my answer is

King Crimson - Lark's Tongue in Aspic

Because that would be impossible?

I'll listen to the two newest suggestions later and get back with my thoughts...

Sljslj 07-16-2010 04:35 PM

Don't want to give you a ****load of stuff to listen to, but I was thinking maybe The Blackening, by Machine Head would do. At first I thought it too heavy for Sheep, but it has a good amount of tracks that Sheep would find atleast mildly interesting.
Check it if you like:

I recommend Clenching The Fists Of Dissent and/or Halo. Also, the Battery cover is worth checking out as well.

it's all good. i initially misinterpreted what you were asking for and thought you were just looking for an album per animal but this is still cool hehe.

The Bullet 07-17-2010 06:53 AM

Guns 'N Roses- Appetite For Destruction

I can see that, or their live album having appeal to all five.

I think that somewhat hits four of the five, although there's nothing close to heavy enough for the Dragon.

This is a really interesting suggestion because the music is so unique. I'm confident it fits the Dragon and the Rabbit, while it I think it somewhat qualifies with the others. It's possibly the best recommendation so far.

The Rabbit would really like it, and there's a little there for the Dragon and Tiger. But the Monkey and the Sheep would not enjoy any of it, IMO.

I listened to a couple of songs and didn't hear any Monkey or Sheep and it seemed too heavy for the Rabbit as well.

I think if anyone were to dislike this it would be the Monkey for it not being "cool" enough. It certainly has the rock for the Dragon and the catchyness for the Sheep. I think the variety of songs might intrigue the Rabbit and there's prolly enough rhythm for the Tiger...

Unrelenting 07-17-2010 02:33 PM

I'm thinking Master of Reality by Black Sabbath

Violent & Funky 07-17-2010 04:34 PM

I thought something along the lines of these. I'm not that much of a fan of Queen, but they're diverse and offer something for everybody I think. They might not hit the Dragon or the Sheep, though. But I do think they have stuff for the other three.

(Circle Takes The Square- As The Roots Undo). My only worry is that the sheep wouldn't like it, but I can see the Dragon, Tiger, Monkey, and possibly Rabbit listening to it.

I don't know if it would be heavy enough for the dragon, but I think the rest would like it.

I certainly believe it's heavy enough for the Dragon and appeases all four members, except for the always tricky Sheep. I don't think the Sheep would take a liking to Billy's voice...

I thought it was still that, I just checked and it's changed! I only send it to people, I don't tend to go on it much. Well done instant rimshot! Moving up in the world.

wait, nevermind.
what about tyondai braxton's solo stuff?
i love this guy so much :)

Sljslj 07-19-2010 04:16 PM

Townsend's album Ki is quite possibly the perfect compromise. The only personality I'm worried about with this is Dragon, as this album almost constantly teases heaviness without ever really getting heavy.
Grooveshark - Listen to Free Music Online - Internet Radio - Free MP3 Streaming
If you're only gonna listen to one track, check out "Gato"; Devin falsetto at 1:50, awesome.

EDIT: Really don't wanna be kissing DT's ass, but Townsend's Addicted is also a candidate imo. It's also on the link above if anyone's interested.
Just listen to Anneke's voice on this track:

Amazing.
