The Toasty 50
The Toasty 50 Hello, Fellow music banter-ers! I'm fairly new around here, and not many of you guys know me very well. In order for you guys to get to know me better, I've decided to compile a "top 50 albums" list. Just in case you guys didn't know, I call myself Toasty, why? Well, in grade two, I burnt my arm on a toaster, and I came to school and everybody started calling me toasty once they found out where the the burn on my arm came from. Now, the origin of my name aside, lets talk albums: #50: Animal Collective: Merriweather Post Pavilion http://www.mtv.com/shared/promoimage...lion/cover.jpg I bet you saw this coming. I usually don't like those REALLY popular hipster bands (Neutral Milk Hotel, for a good example.) but this album is really top notch. Every time you listen to it, you always hear a quirky sample you never heard before. Every song on here is a solid track, from In The Flowers to Brother Sport. And isn't the album art the best? the image above is moving, And it's a JPEG. I also love the singing on this album, It really stands out on tracks like Guys Eyes and Taste.The only problem I have about this album is the repetition, but that doesn't really effect how much I love this album. #49: Autechre: Tri Repetae http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/image...0d25f110.L.gif ^Most imaginative album art ever. The amazing trippy album art aside, the music is pretty top notch. Autechre has a really cool style on this album. They take a really stripped down, minimal beat, and loop it, then a few seconds later, a new sound is added. this process of adding on goes on for a few minutes, and it sounds nothing like the beginning of the song. in fact, the music evolves, and it does so nicely. My personal favorite tracks were Stud and Eutow. If you want to start getting into IDM, this is a good place to start. a brilliant album, in my opinion. |

I actually personally don't like either album posted so far, but I'm interested in seeing more. And good job on taking the time to do this! I was wanting to make a top 100 myself sometime, but college starts soon so I need to see if I'll have time during the year to keep up with the list. I don't want to start and then abandon it.
Anyway, I'll be watching this topic for updates. |
No worries, I've got some good electronica up my sleeve for you guys. such as this one: #48: Kona Triangle: Sing A New Sapling Into Existence http://electropeople.org/uploads/pos...-existence.jpg To tell you the truth, I haven't even heard of Lone until My friend recommended this to me. Apparently Lone is a part of Kona Triangle, and I probably will check Lone out when my internet decides to be faster. Whoops, I got off topic, I will go back to talking about this, now. okay. this is an electronic/IDM-ish/something album, that has a few odd time signatures, old-school-ish synth and a great overall feel. It reminds me of Selected Ambient Works 85-92 era Aphex Twin. The album also has a distinctly tropical feel, as heard on Airlock and Mango Rubicon. This is a good album for fans of Flying Lotus and (from what I've heard among the electronic community) Lone. #47: Maserati: Inventions For The New Season http://img11.nnm.ru/3/b/d/1/6/3bd16e...e4eb8_full.jpg I would probably like U2 if it weren't for Bono. His vocals get on my nerves. I don't know why, though. What if we removed the vocals altogether? you would get Maserati, the instrumental U2. Whatever you do, don't listen to the Pitchfork review of this album. This is a great post-rock album, with some pretty solid tracks. They even wander into Ambient territory with the intro to the second song 12 16, and they pulled it off so nicely. I was recommended this back when I first started listening to post-rock. I must say, even after two years, this album still held up well and withheld the test of time. My favorite track on this album is The World Outside. it begins with an interesting guitar loop and builds up throughout the song. Fascinating listen, I must say. |

#46: GY!BE: Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven http://www.411mania.com/siteimages/l...ists_32815.jpg At first, I thought Godspeed You! Black Emperor was one of those boring orchestral collectives that try to make boring orchestral uplifting music with the tacky loud violins. I really wanted to avoid this group but they followed me. I had no choice, I had to listen. When I finally heard all 87 minutes of it, I was amazed. I mean, at some times it borders on ambient, at some times it's quite orchestral and at some times, it's eerie. My favorite part of this album was the 14 minute mark in the first part (Storm) where it got all buzzing-beehive drone-like and got REAL frantic. That part (and the album as a whole) moved me, and not many albums can do that. #45: Flying Lotus: Cosmogramma http://kulakmamasi.files.wordpress.c...osmogramma.jpg Jazzy electronic music. Gotta love it. oh, and I also love how he collaborated with that super-cool bassist. it's hard to say anything bad about this album, it's pretty cool, and has one of the most beautiful tracks ever written on it (Galaxy in Janaki), and also features the vocals of Thom Yorke (WTF?). Who saw that one coming? I never really noticed that until I bought the CD that said "FEATURING THOM YORKE". that was a huge Wha? moment for me. that aside, Give this album a try. 'Tis quite interesting. it's like a cross-over between a Broken nintendo game and Raga-esque jazz. |
