You know this is something I greatly appreciate about the stripes as well. I think in this regard Jack is a folk musician, recycling, interpolating, and carrying on a tradition that was global and has been forever. To me, public domain songs are the best kind. Refined like wine over centuries of time, you don't get better than Wayfaring Stranger, House of the Rising Sun, or in Jacks case "one more cup of coffee" and "St. James Infirmary Blues"

I'm hoping they cover Tom Wait's "I don't want to grow up" or Neil Young's "After the gold rush"

I actually only downloaded this because my friend wanted it but I'm listening to it right now and I'm really digging it. 300 MPH Torrential Outpour Occurs is probably my favorite track. I kinda gave up on them after I heard Get Behind Me Satan which I found completely awful, but this new album is very refreshing.

I think it suffers from "Few damn good songs and a handful of filler" syndrome. Though I find this to be the case with pretty much every White Stripes album, some less so than others.

Some more obvious than others.
Catch Hell Blues puts me in mind of something, or someone similar I've heard before.
Not sure if it's a particular song, or the overall sound.

Can you nail it Stu?

How about this one: I think "You don't know what love is" sounds like a combination of three songs...

Quinn the Eskimo
Signs (Tesla version)
[unknown]

I think theres a third song in there, but I can hear the other two in there for sure. Your thoughts?

I've been listening to the new album a surprising amount considering I never cared for them aside from when they were on the radio since their one of the better bands being played.

Icky Thump..is all i've heard from the new album because i dont listen to The White Stripes..but its catchy and has a really cool riff.

Flowerhead 06-23-2007 06:30 AM

I like the White Stripes, I saw them play at a music festival in... '05(?), I enjoyed it, however, I think they're more of a pub or studio band.

As for Icky Thump; I'm not disappointed, it has a few fillers, so it seems, but otherwise, I think it's quite pleasing.

Flowerhead is fairly right there, I have a lot of their older shows (Bug Jar, Gold Dollar, Magic Stick, etc.) from 1999 and I prefer them to the newer shows. Didn't really like GBMS that much and they play a lot of those songs at large venues and it doesn't really work too well for them all the time, but the odd time it does (Walking With A Ghost single proves that) but GBMS is still a decent album. Self Titled is my favourite though.
